Changes in the physicochemical properties of transferrin upon chemical derivatization with ceramides

The interaction of native and derivatized transferrin with lecithin, cholesterol and their mixtures was studied using monomolecular layers of phospholipids. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters corresponding to these interactions: the mixing excess free energy, interaction energy, and interaction parameter were also calculated.The ability of these two proteins to insert into monolayers was studied working at constant area.The formation of aggregates or secondary structures in solution was determined by the fluorescence and polarization values of ANS (anilinonaphthalene sulfonate), measured at different protein/ANS relationships.Abbreviations TF Transferrin - DTF derivatized transferrin - PC lecithin - CHOL cholesterol - CER ceramides - ANS anilinonaphthalene sulfonate - TNBS trinitro benzenesulfonate method     

Determination of six metals in galician red wines (in northwestern Spain) by capillary electrophoresis

A simple technique is described for the routine simultaneous capillary electrophoretic determination of 6 cations in wine. Separation was achieved on a fused silica capillary column with a UV-Cat-1, alpha-hydroxysobutyric acid and 18-crown-6-ether buffer at pH 4.5 and indirect UV detection at 214 nm. The content of magnesium, sodium, potassium, calcium, manganese, and lithium was determined. The method is quantitative, with recoveries in the 92-102% range, and linear over more than one order of magnitude. The precision is better than 2.5-3.4%. The method is sensible, with detection limits between 0.01 and 0.06 mg/L. Twenty-five red wines with a Certified Brand of Origin from Galicia (north-western Spain) were analyzed by the proposed method. Various wines showed very similar electrophoretic profiles, but significant quantitative differences were observed.     

Ferromagnetic coupling through spin polarization in the hexanuclear [MnII(3)CuII(3)] complex

A novel Cu(II)-Mn(II) hexanuclear complex of formula [[MnCuL](3)(tma)](ClO(4))(3).8H(2)O [H(2)L = macrocyclic Robson proligand; H(3)tma = trimesic acid] has been obtained by connecting three heterobinuclear [Cu(II)Mn(II)L](2+) cationic species through the trimesate anion. The complex exhibits a C(3) rotational symmetry, imposed by the geometry of the bridging ligand. The interaction within each Mn(II)-Cu(II) pair is antiferromagnetic (J = -16.7 cm(-1)). A weak ferromagnetic coupling among the three S = 2 resulting spins through the tricarboxylato bridge leads to a S = 6 ground spin state, for which the spin polarization mechanism is responsible.     

Single-step preparation and catalytic activity of mesoporous MCM-41 and SBA-15 silicas functionalized with perfluoroalkylsulfonic acid groups analogous to Nafion

Preparation of hybrid organic-inorganic MCM-41 and SBA-15 silicas functionalized with perfluoroalkylsulfonic acid groups has been achieved in a single step by reacting the mesoporous silicas with 1,2,2-trifluoro-2-hydroxy-1-trifluoromethylethane sulfonic acid beta-sultone; the catalysts showed higher activity than commercial Nafion-silica composite for the esterification of long chain fatty acids with ethanol.     

Benzo[d]-1,2-oxaphospholes as precursors of stabilized C-centered radicals

[reaction: see text] Several benzo[d]-1,2-oxaphosphole 2-oxides were examined as potential precursors of stabilized C-centered radicals. The transient absorption spectra obtained after laser flash photolysis in the presence of di-tert-butyl peroxide showed the features of benzylic radicals with formation and decay kinetics not significantly influenced by the presence of oxygen. In the case of compounds with two possible diastereomeric forms, the C-H bond of the trans-isomers [corrected] is more reactive toward hydrogen abstraction.     

Development of a perfusion reversed-phase HPLC method for the separation of soybean and cereal (wheat, corn, and rice) proteins in binary mixtures. Application to the detection of soybean proteins in commercial bakery products

A perfusion reversed-phase HPLC method enabling the simultaneous separation of soybean and cereal (wheat, corn, and rice) proteins in commercial bakery products has been proposed for the first time. The method utilises an acetonitrile-water gradient containing an ion-pairing agent. Different ion-pairing agents were tried, 0.3% (v/v) acetic acid being observed to enable the separation of soybean from wheat, rice, and corn proteins while with 0.1% (v/v) trifluoroacetic acid only the separation of soybean and corn proteins was possible. Optimisation of the solubilisation conditions for proteins was achieved by testing different acetonitrile concentrations for the simultaneous extraction of soybean and cereal proteins: best recoveries were found with 25% (v/v) acetonitrile + 0.3% (v/v) acetic acid and with 40% (v/v) acetonitrile + 0.1% (v/v) trifluoroacetic acid. Chromatographic conditions such as gradient, temperature, and wavelength detection were also optimised. The method enabled the separation of soybean and cereal proteins in binary mixtures (soybean and wheat, soybean and corn, or soybean and rice proteins) in less than 5 minutes in a total analysis time of 20 min.     

New synthetic routes to cationic rhenium tricarbonyl bipyridine complexes with labile ligands

Triflate abstraction from the complex [Re(OTf)(CO)(3)(bipy)] (1) using the salt NaBAr'(4) (Ar' = 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) in dichloromethane solution in the presence of L = PPh(3), NCMe, NCPh, imines, ketones, Et(2)O, THF, MeOH, and MeI affords cationic complexes [Re(L)(CO)(3)(bipy)](+) as their BAr'(4)(-) salts. The new complexes have been characterized spectroscopically and, for [Re(eta(1)-O=C(Me)R)(CO)(3)(bipy)]BAr'(4) (R = CH(3), 6a; R = Ph, 6b), and [Re(THF)(CO)(3)(bipy)]BAr'(4) (9), also by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compared with conventional methodologies, the route reported here allows the coordination of a broader range of weakly coordinating ligands and requires considerably milder conditions. On the other hand, the reactions of lithium acetylides with [Re(THF)(CO)(3)(bipy)]BAr'(4) (9) can be used for the high-yield syntheses of rhenium alkynyls [Re(Ctbd1;CR)(CO)(3)(bipy)] (R = Ph, 12; R = SiMe(3), 13). Complex 9 was found to catalyze the aziridination of benzylideneaniline with ethyl diazoacetate.     

Indirect spectrophotometric determination of cyanide

A spectrophotometric method for cyanide based on its inhibition of the colour formation reaction between nickel(II) and 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolylazo)-2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid has been developed, and allows the determination of down to 0.1 g of cyanide. Most of the interferences can be avoided by displacement of the hydrogen cyanide using an arsine generator.     

On the synthesis of 3(5)-carbomethoxy-4-hetarylpyrazoles

3(5)-Carbomethoxy-4-hetarylpyrazoles 3 can be obtained by the aromatization of the corresponding cis-3-benzamido-3-carbomethoxy-4-hetaryl-Δ¹-pyrazolines 2 obtained by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of diazo-methane with methyl Z-2-benzamido-3-hetarylpropenoates 1. An explanation, based on FMO theory, for the different reactivity of the dipolarophiles with diazomethane is given.
