Application of Polymer-Embedded Tris(2,2′ Bipyridine-Ruthenium(II) to Photodetection of Oxygen

A Nafion film containing tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) as a luminescence probe was applied to photodetection of oxygen in a gas by utilizing the luminescence quenching by dioxygen. The linear Stern-Volmer plots of the emission intensity with respect to the oxygen concentration allowed quantitative determination of the oxygen. From the emission decay studied by a single-photon counting method, it was concluded that the quenching of the excited state Ru complex by oxygen proceeds by a conventional dynamic mechanism.     

Polymer-Supported Bases. 10. Synthesis of Phosphatidylcholines Using Polymer-Supported or Free Acylimidazoles

Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine was synthesized in a good yield by the reaction of L-α-glycerophosphorylcholine with 1-palmitoylimidazole in the presence of DBU. Polymer-supported 1-palmitoylimidazole moiety also could be used as the acylating reagent, though the yield of the choline was moderate.     

Solvent effect on protein binding by polymer brush grafted onto porous membranes

An epoxy-group-containing polymer chain was grafted onto the hollow-fiber form of a porous polyethylene membrane by the immersion of the electron beam-irradiated trunk polymer in glycidyl methacrylate diluted with methanol and 1-butanol. The epoxy group density ranged from 8.5 to 13.4 mol per kg of the trunk polymer. Subsequently, the epoxy groups produced were converted into sulfonic acid and diethylamino groups. The density of -SOH and -N(C2H5), groups was 0.40 and 2.2 mol per kg of the product. respectively. The polymer brush, defined as a polymer chain extending from the surface of a pore toward the interior of the pore, was evaluated from the determination of an equilibrium binding capacity of hen egg lysozyme (HEL) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The polymer brush prepared in 1-butanol was found to be longer than that prepared in methanol from the determinations of liquid permeability and protein adsorptivity. The proteins were bound to the polymer brush prepared in 1-butanol, followed by the functionalization, at higher degrees of multilayer binding: about 30 for HEL and 6 for BSA.     

Manganese(III)-Catalysed Oxidation of Sulphides with Sodium Chlorite in an Aprotic Solvent in the Presence of Alumina

A wide variety of sulphides can be readily converted to the corresponding sulphoxides in good to excellent yields by treatment with a combination of sodium chlorite, (salen)manganese(III) complex, and chromatographic alumina in dichloromethane under mild and neutral conditions.     

(2,7-Disubstituted-1,8-biphenylenedioxy)bis(dimethylaluminum) as bidentate organoaluminum Lewis acids: elucidation and synthetic Utility of the double electrophilic activation phenomenon

A series of (2,7-disubstituted-1,8-biphenylenedioxy)bis(dimethylaluminum) (2) has been readily prepared in situ by treatment of the requisite 2,7-disubstituted-1,8-biphenylenediol (1) with Me3Al (2 equiv) in CH2Cl2 at room temperature; this primarily relies on the successful establishment of a new synthetic procedure of 1 starting from inexpensive m-anisidine. Evaluation of 2 as a bidentate organoaluminum Lewis acid has been performed by the reduction of ketonic substrates using Bu3SnH as a hydride source in comparison to the conventional monodentate Lewis acid dimethylaluminum 2,6-xylenoxide (11), uncovering the significantly high activation ability of 2 toward carbonyl. Particularly, (2,7-dimethyl-1,8-biphenylenedioxy)bis(dimethylaluminum) (2a) exerted the highest reactivity, which has also been emphasized in the Mukaiyama aldol reaction. The structure of the bidentate Lewis acid 2 was unambiguously determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 2g possessing a bulky 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl substituent, revealing the rigid dimeric assembly in the solid state. The double electrophilic activation of carbonyl substrate by 2a has been supported by low-temperature 13C NMR analysis as well as theoretical study using the Gaussian 98 program. Moreover, unique stereoselectivity has been observed in the 2a-promoted Mukaiyama Michael addition, and highly chemoselective functionalization of carbonyl compounds in the presence of their acetal counterparts has been realized using 2a. Finally, the effectiveness of 2a for the activation of ether functionality has been demonstrated in the Claisen rearrangement of allyl vinyl ethers.     

Frequency measuring system using mirror gap stabilized Fabry-Perot interferometer

The mirror gap of a Fabry-Perot interferometer was stabilized with two laser diodes; one locked to the line frequency 385,243,555.14445 MHz of the F=3<--1 in 5D(3/2)<--5S(1/2) (87Rb) and the other to the 385,284,566.3663 MHz of the F=4<--2 in 5D(5/2)<--5S(1/2) (87Rb) [Opt. Commun. 102 (1993) 432]. The length of the mirror gap was adjusted to generate the zero-cross points simultaneously at both of the two line positions. The fringe signals obtained from an interferometer thus stabilized can be used as frequency markers having accuracies of the order of 10(10) depending on the finesse of the interferometer used. Based on measurement using Cs D1 hyperfine lines reported by Udem et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82 (1999) 3568], the uncertainty of markers in the region 50 THz apart from the reference lines is +/- 5 MHz.     

Chirality control in optically active polysilane aggregates

A novel strategy for controlling the higher order chirality of aggregates prepared from enantiopure polysilanes is experimentally probed and discussed. Structurally similar poly[n-alkyl(aryl)]silanes were synthesized in which one side chain comprised the chiral (S)-2-methylbutyl group and the other an achiral m- or p-alkyl-substituted phenyl ring. In solution the polymers adopt helical conformations with the same induced preferential screw sense chirality, as evidenced by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Aggregates, however, formed by addition of a nonsolvent to a polymer solution, show oppositely signed CD spectra. Consistent results were obtained for another series of poly[p-n-alkyl(aryl)]silanes where alkyl is butyl, propyl, and ethyl. The sense of the aggregate higher order chirality is dependent on the chemical composition and environment and is coarse-tunable by adjusting the length of the achiral side chain and fine-tunable by adjusting the good/poor solvent ratio. The origin of these effects is discussed with reference to a simple model.     

Vesicle formation in oleyldimethylamine oxide/sodium oleate mixtures

Vesicle formation in a mixture of oleyldimethylamine oxide (OleylDMAO) and sodium oleate (NaOl) was investigated by viscoelastic measurements and cryoscopic transmission electron micrograph (cryo-TEM) observations. The viscoelastic properties changed with increasing mole fraction of NaOl (X _NaOl) from the Maxwell behavior of OleylDMAO solutions (X _NaOl=0) suggesting a transient network of long flexible chains. For X _NaOl=0.2 and 0.4 mixtures, both the shear storage modulus G and the shear loss modulus G showed weak dependences on angular frequency with a relation G>G. From cryo-TEM observations, vesicles coexisted with threadlike micelles in mixtures of X _NaOl=0.2 and 0.3. As X _NaOl increased further (X _NaOl=0.5 and 0.6), threadlike micelles disappeared and the coexistence of vesicles and globular micelles was observed. At X _NaOl=0.5, the viscosity decreased remarkably, which was consistent with the disappearance of threadlike micelles. The results indicated that vesicles were formed by the addition of NaOl to OleylDMAO solutions, contrary to the expectation of a decrease of the packing parameter with the introduction of electric charges.     

Synthesis of novel organoselenium as catalyst for Baeyer-Villiger oxidation with 30% H2O2

A novel diselenide was synthesized in good yield via only four steps from phenol, and was employed as the catalyst for the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation with 30% H₂O₂ to obtain lactones in good yields.
