Coded transmissions for space links affected by solar scintillation: Baseband analysis

A thorough analysis of the behavior of error‐correcting codes over space links affected by solar scintillation is presented. The relevant channel parameters are fixed through the development of a model based on real missions' data. Both telecommand and telemetry links are considered in fast and slow fading conditions. Besides classical coherent modulation schemes, the possibility to use noncoherent modulation schemes is considered, to eliminate the problem of phase tracking. For the case of channels with very slow fading, the use of external interleavers or erasure coding is proposed to cope with error bursts.     

Differential characters and cohomology of the moduli of flat connections

Let \(\pi {:}\, P\rightarrow M\) be a principal bundle and p an invariant polynomial of degree r on the Lie algebra of the structure group. The theory of Chern–Simons differential characters is exploited to define a homology map \(\chi ^{k} {:}\, H_{2r-k-1}(M)\times H_{k}({\mathcal {F}}/{\mathcal {G}})\rightarrow {\mathbb {R}}/{\mathbb {Z}}\), for \(k<r-1\), where \({\mathcal {F}} /{\mathcal {G}}\) is the moduli space of flat connections of \(\pi \) under the action of a subgroup \({\mathcal {G}}\) of the gauge group. The differential characters of first order are related to the Dijkgraaf–Witten action for Chern–Simons theory. The second-order characters are interpreted geometrically as the holonomy of a connection in a line bundle over \({\mathcal {F}}/{\mathcal {G}}\). The relationship with other constructions in the literature is also analyzed.

On Coron's problem for the p-Laplacian

We prove that the critical problem for the p-Laplacian operator admits a nontrivial solution in annular shaped domains with sufficiently small inner hole. This extends Coron's result [4] to a class of quasilinear problems.     

Catalytic Adventures in Space and Time Using High Energy X-rays

Very high energy X-rays (ca. >40 keV) have long offered great promise in providing great insight into the inner workings of catalysts; insights that may complement the battery of techniques available to researchers in catalysis either in the laboratory or at more conventional X-ray wavelengths. This contribution aims to critically assess the diverse possibilities now available in the high energy domain as a result of the maturation of third generation synchrotron facilities and to look forward to the potential that forthcoming developments in synchrotron source technology may offer the world of catalysis in the near future.     

Diamine anchored molecular junctions of oligo(phenylene ethynylene) cruciform

Using diamine as anchoring group, the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) based on oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s (OPEs) and cruciform OPEs with an extended tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) (OPE3 and OPE3-TTF) were successfully formed on the Au substrate and then utilized in molecular junctions by conductingprobe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM).
