Annihilation density distribution calculations for medically important positron emitters

The effect of positron range on the image-plane resolution of tomographic images is evaluated through calculations based on a model which employs beta-decay energy spectra and an empirical range formula. Predicted range distribution functions are compared with published measurements for three medically important positron emitters: (11 )C, (68)Ga, and (82)Rb. The effect of tomographic slice thickness on point-source annihilation distribution functions is also demonstrated. Line-spread functions are calculated using the model, for the above isotopes as well as for (18)F, (15)O, and (13)N. Image-plane resolution predictions are made for high-resolution positron cameras for various positron emitting isotopes with end-point energies up to 4 MeV.     

Simultaneous analysis of oxidized and reduced glutathione in cell extracts by capillary zone electrophoresis

Glutathione (GSH) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) levels in cells constitute a thiol redox system. They can be used as an indicator of oxidative stress of the cell. In this study, a capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method is described that enables quantitation of GSH and GSSG from cellular extracts. The CZE buffer used was 20 mM ammonium acetate containing 5% (v/v) acetic acid at pH 3.1 in conjunction with a polybrene coated capillary operated in reverse polarity mode. Effects of different acids used to prepare cell samples were investigated on CZE performance. The acids include meta phosphoric acid (MPA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), phosphoric acid (PA) and sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) and are used to stabilize GSH and GSSG before performing CZE analysis. The method features a limit of detection of 4 microM and a limit of quantitation of 12 microM for both GSSG and GSH and recoveries of 94% for GSH and 100% for GSSG. Quantitative analysis of GSSG and GSH in HaCaT cell extracts (5% SSA, w/v) was performed with this method and changes in the ratio of GSH to GSSG in N-ethylmaleimide treated cell sample was observed by comparing with control cell samples.     

Highly selective thiocyanate poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrode based on a cadmium-Schiff's base complex

A PVC membrane electrode based on a cadmium-salen (N,N'-bis-salicylidene-1,2-ethylenediamine) complex as an anion carrier is described. The electrode has an anti-Hofmeister selectivity sequence with a preference for thiocyanate at pH 1.5-11.0. It has a linear response to thiocyanate from 1.0 x 10(-6) to 1.0 x 10(-1) mol L(-1) with a slope of 59.1 +/- 0.2 mV per decade, and a detection limit of 7 x 10(-7) mol L(-1). This electrode has high selectivity for thiocyanate relative to many common organic and inorganic anions. The proposed sensor has a fast response time of approximately 15 s. It was applied to the determination of thiocyanate in a milk sample.
