Axial Structure of the Field Intensity in Diffusion-Controlled Surface-Wave Produced Plasmas

Surface-wave gas discharges sustained under the conditions of a diffusion controlled regime are studied on the basis of the fluid plasma model. The self-consistent behaviour of the plasma density and of the field intensity along the discharge length is obtained. It is shown that the nonlinearity in the particle balance equation due to stepwise ionisation determines the plasma density in terms of the field intensity and ensures self-consistent behaviour of the wave ? discharge characteristics in a diffusion controlled regime.     

Numerical diffraction coefficients for surface waves

The numerical uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) is extended to include surface waves. A method for extracting surface wave diffraction coefficients from moment method data is given and Prony's method is applied to the problem of determining surface wave propagation constants. The method is validated through comparison with the exact solution of the problem of surface wave diffraction by a truncated dielectric slab recessed in a conducting surface. Examples are given for scattering from dielectric slabs and frequency-selective surfaces and for radiation from a conformal microstrip antenna with a truncated substrate. The accuracy obtained is demonstrated by comparison with moment method calculations

Optically amplified first window systems experiments

A diode pumped, commercially packaged, thulium doped fluoride fiber amplifier (TDFFA) operating in the region of 0.8 μm has been characterized. The unit is capable of producing large small signal gains, low noise figures and high saturated output powers. A power amplifier slope efficiency of 62% has been achieved at 810 nm. The same TDFFA unit was used in a series of systems experiments, at data rates of 310 Mb/s and 1.2 Gb/s, in the first telecommunications window. The results of this work indicate that data can be transmitted over ≈10 km lengths of both singlemode and standard transmission fiber, while still allowing significant margin to split the signal to a number of customers. The application of the TDFFA could therefore have significant benefit for future LAN/MAN type systems architectures involving large signal splits to customer's premises     

Bifurcations in the growth process of a vortex sheet in rotating superfluid

Vortex-sheet growth is considered. Broken symmetry bifurcations are found in the growth process. The collective elasticity theory for a well-developed vortex sheet is presented, which is similar to that of smectic liquid crystals. The bifurcations in the limit of a much folded vortex sheet correspond to the Helfrich instability in smectics and cholesterics.

Eigenmode analysis of dielectric loaded top-hat monopole antennas

Eigenmode expansions are used for computing the currents on a dielectric loaded top-hat monopole radiating above an infinite conducting ground plane. The approach is facilitated by adding a parallel ground plane above the antenna, thus allowing use of cylindrical harmonic field expansions in each of three regions. Expansion coefficients are found by enforcing boundary and continuity conditions at conducting surfaces and regional interfaces. Convergence and accuracy are assessed using comparisons with three other methodologies, namely an integral equation solution, a quasi-static analysis, and multi-octave experimental measurements     

New wideband, 0.67λg circumference 180°hybrid ring coupler

A new 180° hybrid ring coupler is reported. This coupler uses coplanar waveguides and has a very small circumference of only 0.67λ_g. A bandwidth greater than one octave is demonstrated
