We describe a microelectrode system for recordings from nerve bundles with diameters ranging from 20-200 microm. A novel polyimide structure allows for a planar microfabricated device to constrain a free neural process against several recording sites. This polyimide array contains multiple zigzag vias through which a small nerve process may be woven while remaining functionally intact in a live preparation. Our electrode construct features the benefits of nerve cuffs (evenly spaced electrodes in a polymer) and the functionality of a nerve hook (ability to connect to submillimeter processes). The device records extracellular action potentials in the red-swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. Action potential propagation is monitored at several sites along a constrained nerve in this model organism's peripheral nervous system. Details of temporal accuracy and error sources in absolute conduction velocity measurements from microelectrode arrays are discussed. 相似文献

We report on an effect of reduced dimensionality on the magnetotransport in cobalt layers sandwiched by platinum. In a current in-plane geometry it is found that the resistivity depends on the magnetization orientation within the plane perpendicular to the current direction. The resistivity shows a symmetry adapted cos(2) dependence on the angle to the surface normal, with the maximum along the surface normal. The Co thickness dependence of the effect in Pt/Co/Pt sandwiches clearly points out that the mechanism behind this effect originates at the Co/Pt interfaces and is disparate to the texture induced geometrical size effect. 相似文献

In recent years, there has been an upsurge of interest in multihop-augmented infrastructure-based networks in both the industry and academia, such as the seed concept in 3GPP, mesh networks in IEEE 802.16, and converge extension of HiperLAN/2 through relays or user-cooperative diversity mesh networks. This article, a synopsis of numerous contributions to the working group 4 of the wireless world research forum and other research work, presents an overview of important topics and applications in the context of relaying. It covers different approaches to exploiting the benefits of multihop communications via relays, such as solutions for radio range extension in mobile and wireless broadband cellular networks (trading range for capacity), and solutions to combat shadowing at high radio frequencies. Furthermore, relaying is presented as a means to reduce infrastructure deployment costs. It is also shown that through the exploitation of spatial diversity, multihop relaying can enhance capacity in cellular networks.
