Properties of (InGa)As/GaAs QW (λ ≈ 1.2 µm) facet-coated edge emitting diode laser

In this paper, we report on the design and optical properties of laser diodes with an emission wave-length of ～1170 nm based on an (InGa)As/GaAs double quantum well active layer. The back and front facet of the laser diodes were coated with SiO_x dielectric films that influence the output optical power by enhancing or lowering the facet reflectivity. The measurements show improvement of the facet-coated laser diode properties in the threshold-current-density reduction along with light output power enhancement. Furthermore, a narrow far field pattern and high side mode suppression have been observed.

Analysis of surface state effect on gate lag phenomena in GaAsMESFET's

A two-dimensional transient simulation of the gate lag phenomenon in GaAs MESFET's has been performed. Our results show that the charge exchanges in the population of the surface states at the ungated access region of FET's are responsible for this slow transient phenomenon. The measured “hole-trap-like” DLTS signal is directly related to the re-emission of the holes, trapped during the filling pulse. Higher gate pulse can cause more serious lag phenomenon due to larger modulation of surface charge density. Devices with shorter N⁺-gate spacing and lower surface state densities are shown to have less gate lag effect     

UV curing of a novel resin derived from poly(ethylene terephthalate)

The synthesis and characterization of photopolymerizable unsaturated polyester resins based on PET waste are described. The resins came from a depolymerization process based on the glycolysis of PET by diethylene glycol (DEG). Different molecular weights of glycolysates were synthesized. Then, the latter was functionalized by a methyl hemiester of maleic acid to obtain unsatured α,ω‐bismaleate PET oligomers. In the presence of an electron donor monomer, such as triethylene glycol divinyl ether, these electron acceptor oligomers were copolymerized by way of charge‐transfer complexes under UV irradiation. The reaction was monitored in situ by real‐time IR spectroscopy to study the kinetics of photopolymerization. This one was studied in relation with the physical and chemical characteristics of oligoesters and the composition of mixtures containing divinyl ethers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nitride-based flip-chip ITO LEDs

Nitride-based flip-chip indium-tin-oxide (ITO) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were successfully fabricated. It was found that the forward voltage and the 20 mA output power of the flip-chip ITO LED were 3.32 V and 14.5 mW, respectively. Although the operation voltage of such a flip-chip ITO LED was slightly larger, it was found that its output power was much larger than those of conventional nonflip-chip LEDs. It was also found that flip-chip ITO LEDs were more reliable.

The authors present the design and the development of integrated microwave filters using suspended substrate microstrip, a technology that provides many advantages. Through quasi-static approximation the propagation structure has been treated using integral equations solved with the method of moments. Thanks to this tool of analysis and to an accurate synthesis method, a series of bandpass filters have been designed and manufactured. The results presented validate the accuracy of our design method.     

New estimates for the Laplacian,the div–curl,and related Hodge systems

Fracture strength of class II slot cavities restored with polymerizable restorative materials

This study compared the fracture strength of Class II slot cavities restored with polymerizable restorative materials. Sixty, caries-free, posterior teeth were divided into five groups of 12 teeth. The Class II slot cavities were prepared. The teeth were restored with two packable composites (Filtek P60, Surefil), a microhybrid composite (Filtek Z250)and two ormocer (Definite, Admira). The restorations were then subjected to fracture resistance tests. The marginal ridges of the restorations were loaded at an angle of 13.5° to the long axis of the tooth in an Universal Testing Machine until failure. Analysis of mean forces indicated that, Filtek P60, Surefil and Filtek Z250 exhibited better performance than Definite and Admira. The tested resin composites differed in their mechanical properties. This study suggested that fracture behavior were highly influenced by the filler system. Overall, Filtek P60, Surefil, Filtek Z250, demonstrated good fracture resistance.
