Rapid computer simulation of ESR spectra. Conventional ESR of axially symmetric 14N-nitroxide spin labels

A computer algorithm is presented for the simulation of the effect of molecular tumbling on ESR spectra, and is applied to simulation of the conventional ESR signal (the absorption signal detected at the first harmonic of the modulation frequency and in-phase with the modulation frequency, in the limit of low microwave and modulation power) of axially symmetric ¹⁴N-nitroxide spin labels. The algorithm is extremely fast and is economical in terms of computer memory requirements.     

Synthesis of 2′,3′-dihydrospiro[benzofuran-2(3H),4′(1′-H)isoquinoline]s. A novel heterocyclic ring system

The synthesis of a novel 2′,3′-dihydrospiro(benzofuran-2(3H),4′(1′H)isoquinoline] ring system ( IV ) by a nucleophilic aromatic fluoride displacement-cyclization is described. Preparation of various derivatives of IV as well as the precursor 4-(2-fluorobenzyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-isoquinolinols is also described.     

Super spline spaces of smoothnessr and degreed≥3r+2

The problem of computing the dimension of spaces of splines whose elements are piecewise polynomials of degreed withr continuous derivatives globally has attracted a great deal of attention recently. We contribute to this theory by obtaining dimension formulae for certain spaces of super splines, including the case where varying amounts of additional smoothness is enforced at each vertex. We also explicitly construct minimally supported bases for the spaces. The main tool is the Bernstein-Bézier method.Communicated by Klaus Höllig.     

Mixed-metal hydride complexes containing ZrHA1 bridges. synthesis and relation to transition-metal-catalyzed reactions of aluminum hydrides

Dialkylaluminum hydrides and Cp₂ZrX₂ (Cp = π⁵-C₅H₅; X = Cl, H, alkyl) were found to react by aggregation to give mixed ZrAl trihydride complexes containing ZrHAl bridges. Reactions of these mixed-metal hydrides are discussed and structural parallels between them and known aluminum hydride complexes are drawn.     

Formation of a cyclobutylidene ring: intramolecular [2 + 2] cycloaddition of allyl and vinylidene C=C bonds under mild conditions

Intramolecular [2 + 2] cycloaddition of two C=C bonds in vinylidene complexes [Ru(eta5-C9H7){=C=C(R)H}(PPh3){kappa1-(P)-PPh2(C3H5)][BF4] affords cyclobutylidene complexes [Ru(eta5-C9H7){kappa2-(P,C)-(=CC(R)HCH2CHCH2PPh2)}(PPh3)][BF4], which can be also obtained by reaction of terminal alkynes with [Ru(eta5-C9H7)(PPh3){kappa3-(P,C,C)-PPh2(C3H5)}][PF6]. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions via vinylidene complexes, and the activation parameters were determined by kinetic studies.     

Fluorotamoxifen. A Caveat on the Generality of Electrophilic Destannylation

A one-step synthesis of fluorotamoxifen from tamnoxifen is described. Attempts to achieve synthesis of the title compound by fluorodestannylation or transmetallation were unsuccessful.

Microsoft Excel as a supplement in a high school statistics course

This study was conducted in the spring of 2002 at Arlington High School in a Probability and Statistics course for junior and senior level students. Two sections of the class were compared with respect to the use/non-use of EXCEL in the course. The experimental group (the one using EXCEL) outperformed the control group on five of the six teacher-created unit tests and on both of the criterion referenced assessments used by the district; however, the differences were not statistically significant at the 0.05 level. Furthermore, the experimental group expressed very positive feelings towards the use of the software in a survey administered at the conclusion of the course.
