A spot-size transformer based on mode interference

A novel mode-size transformer based on interference between guided and leaky modes is proposed and analyzed. Simulation shows significant improvement in spot-size transform efficiency per unit length, in comparison with the conventional tapered waveguide mode size converters based on mode evolution. Owing to its structural simplicity, easy fabrication is another merit of the new spot-size transformer     

Influence of series resistance in oxide parameter extraction data from accelerated tests

Accelerated reliability tests on thin oxide capacitors can be affected by series resistance effects at high stress conditions. The purpose of this work is to point out such problems both with measurements and simulations. It is shown that breakdown electric field is overestimated. Due to the resulting nonuniform stress, charge to breakdown density is underestimated if the test structure layout is not accurately designed. In any case the series resistance effects can have an undesirable impact on the reliability evaluation of thin dielectrics.     

A parallel plate-fed slot antenna loaded by a dielectricsemicylinder

Moment-method oriented singular integral equation techniques are used for the exact analysis of parallel plate-fed slot antennas loaded by a dielectric semicylinder. Both for TM and for TE incident-mode excitations, high-order acceleration techniques are developed that help recast all matrix elements into rapidly converging series. This, in conjunction with the small matrix sizes required, enables one to obtain extremely accurate results with low computational cost     

Intramolecular heterocyclization with accompanying exoiminization in the reaction of ammonia with 2-chloroperfluoro-1-cyclohexene-1-thiocyanate

The reaction of ammonia with 2-chloroperfluoro-1-cyclohexene-1-thiocyanate leads to 2-amino-7-iminoperfluoro-4,5,6-trihydrobenzo-1,3-thiazole (II) due to intramolecular heterocyclization in the Thorpe reaction with the concurrent exoiminization. Analysis of the IR spectra of (II) in CCl₄ and in the solid phase indicated that molecules of (II) in the crystal form hydrogen-bonded centrosymmetric dimers (D), which are in equilibrium with free molecules of (II) in solution.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 10, pp. 2366–2370, October, 1991.The authors express their gratitude to D. Fourier-transform-limited pulses from gain-switched distributed-Bragg-reflector lasers using simultaneous modulation of gain and phase sections

Fourier-transform-limited pulses ( Delta tau . Delta nu approximately=0.35) have been obtained from a microwave-modulated DBR laser at 1.56 mu m. The chirp of the gain-switched pulse is compensated for by applying a fraction of the microwave signal to the phase section, thereby creating an instantaneous frequency shift of opposite sign. The generation of short coherent pulses from such a monolithic source can be of great interest for long haul soliton transmission.<>     

Reactivity of 3-alkyl-4-arylazomethylene-3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-benzotriazines in protic solvents: 1,4-Addition reactions and dimroth rearrangement

3-Alkyl-4-arylazomethylene-3,4-dihydro-1,2,3-benzotriazines 5a and 5b undergo facile 1,4-addition of methanol or ethanol to afford stable crystalline hydrazones, 6 and 8 which have been characterised by spectroscopic analysis. In particular, the nmr spectrum of 8 shows novel features due to the diastereotopic nature of the CH₂ protons in the two O-ethyl groups. Compound 5b shows a property unique to the compounds in this series; refluxing this arylazomethylenetriazine in ethanol affords a rearranged product, characterised as the 1-aryl-2-cinnolinylhydrazine ( 9 ). The formation of 9 is rationalised as a ring opening-ring closure process analogous to the Dimroth rearrangement. The cinnoline 9 displays some novel chemistry arising from the facility of the arylhydrazino substituent to react with acid to give a fragmentation product, 3-methylindazole ( 7 ).     

Anisotropic alpha-emission in the223Ra decay chain

Anisotropic α-emission from nuclei in the decay chain from²²³Ra to²⁰⁷Tl has been observed using low temperature nuclear orientation in combination with high resolution α-detection at 4.2 K. Information on partial wave amplitudes as well as hyperfine interactions has been extracted.     

Carrier multiplication in submicrometre pMOS transistors operated at cryogenic temperatures

The temperature and bias dependence of the carrier multiplication M(I/sub bulk//I/sub drain/) in submicrometre pMOS transistors has been characterised and studied over the temperature range of 30-300 K. In addition, a model which reproduces the bias dependence of M over the measured range of temperature can be extrapolated down to 4.2 K to predict the internal bulk potential and its related 'kink effect'. The agreement between data and the prediction of the model confirms that the gate voltage and temperature dependence of the mean free path plays the key role in determining the carrier multiplication characteristics of submicrometre pMOS transistors, operating in the temperature range of 4.2-300 K.<>     

Breaking the Nyquist barrier

The author discusses the concept that data sampled beyond the Nyquist frequency is meaningless. A simple signal processing scheme to extend resolution to nearly twice the Nyquist without the problem of alias emerged.
