A variational perturbation approximation method in Tsallis non-extensive statistical physics

For the generalized statistical mechanics based on the Tsallis entropy, a variational perturbation approximation method with the principle of minimal sensitivity is developed by calculating the generalized free energy up to the third order in variational perturbation expansion. The approximation up to the first order amounts to a variational approach which covers the variational method developed by E.K. Lenzi, L.C. Malacarne, R.S. Mendes [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 (1998) 218] and the approximations up to higher orders can systematically improve variational results. As an illustrated example, the generalized free energy for a classical harmonic oscillator (considered in the Lenzi's joint work) are calculated up to the third order, and the resultant approximations up to the first, second, and third orders are numerically compared with the exact result.     

Passive combination of multiple beams in an optical fiber via stimulated Brillouin scattering

We demonstrate passive combination of multiple beams in an optical fiber via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). Four off-axis beams are combined in a long multimode optical fiber using a novel all-optical mount. The combined beam has the high spatial coherence properties of the LP(01) mode owing to the beam cleanup properties of SBS. The threshold for SBS when off-axis pumps are used is shown to be a factor of 13 times higher than for on-axis pump beams. We propose this method would improve the brightness of an array of fiber amplifiers.     

Future Direction for a Diffusion Barrier in Future High-Density Volatile and Nonvolatile Memory Devices

This article reviews the current status of high-density capacitor for volatile memory devices. The dielectric properties for both the Ta₂O₅ film and the (Ba, Sr)TiO₃ (BST) dielectric materials using either the metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) or the atomic layer deposition (ALD) are reviewed briefly. New challenges of dielectric material for the next generation, and serious problems emerged during integration to date using Ta₂O₅ and BST. The material characteristics of many electrode materials for the high dielectric materials are introduced. We present the basic properties and integration issued for MOCVD-ruthenium (Ru). The second part of this review summarized the failure mechanisms from barrier properties of previously reported diffusion barriers and emphasizes new design concepts of diffusion barrier for high-density memory devices. Finally, the future direction for a diffusion barrier to advance high-density memory capacitors is suggested.     

Integrated electro-optic platform using ferroelectric crystals with the point symmetry of orthorhombic mm2

We theoretically and numerically investigate the modulation efficiencies of integrated electro-optic (EO) modulators based on ferroelectric crystals with the point symmetry of orthorhombic mm2. An analytical expression describing the index-ellipsoid under the EO effect is derived, where all 5 non-zero linear EO coefficients of mm2-crystals are considered. As practical candidates for integrated EO platform, three mm2-crystals (KNbO₃, KTiOPO₄, and Ba₂NaNb₅O₁₅) that are well-established and commercially available are chosen for numerical simulations. The refractive-index (RI) changes caused by an external electric field applied to each crystal with an arbitrary direction are analyzed in detail for the given optical polarization states of input light wave. For each crystal, the modulation efficiency is evaluated in terms of the half-wave voltage required for a π-phase shift of input wave, which is compared with the established counterpart based on LiNbO₃. The results indicate that higher modulation efficiencies are achievable in the two schemes using KNbO₃ and Ba₂NaNb₅O₁₅ than those for other cases, meaning that either lower power-consuming or larger beam-window integrated EO devices are feasible.     

LGP pattern design with single LED light source

We investigated optimize pattern design of a LGP for TFT-LCD with single LED. For the purpose, we introduced new concepts of pattern design most appropriate design for single light source, density adjustment design and radius adjustment design. And than compared the LGP output intensity distribution of the two cases with that of the uniform density pattern. As the result, above two types pattern design given a good result. Especially, the radius adjustment pattern design enhanced intensity uniformity definitely.     

Advancement of MIMO technology in WiMAX: from IEEE 802.16d/e/j to 802.16m

WiMAX is the first cellular standard that employs OFDMA technology and provides true integrated services for both fixed and mobile broadband access. Among the many new technologies adopted in WiMAX, MIMO antenna technology plays an essential role in delivering fast, rich-content, mobile broadband service reliably over extended coverage areas. In this article we provide a survey on the state of art of MIMO technologies in current WiMAX standards with an emphasis on practical engineering considerations. Moreover, we also briefly discuss the ongoing MIMO technologies in the evolution toward the next-generation WiMAX network.     

Osmium tetroxide-(QN)2PHAL in an ionic liquid: a highly efficient and recyclable catalyst system for asymmetric dihydroxylation of olefins

In Os-catalysed asymmetric dihydroxylation using NMO as a co-oxidant, the combination of an ionic liquid and the new bis-cinchona alkaloid 2 generated in situ from (QN)2PHAL during reaction provided a simple and practical approach to the recycling of both catalytic components (osmium tetraoxide and chiral ligand).     

Catalytic and highly regiospecific carbon-carbon bond formation at alpha-position of Michael acceptor by palladium complex

Activated olefins react with allyl acetates and Bu3SnH in the presence of a catalytic amount of a palladium catalyst to afford the corresponding products which construct a new C-C bond selectively at the alpha-position of Michael acceptors.
