A coherent optical data-processing system for identifying and counting blood cells has been developed. Optical Weiner-Kolmogorov (minimum mean-square error) linear filtering is employed to estimate the density per unit area of a given cell type present in a sample blood smear. The Weiner filter is designed to recognize the characteristics of an ensemble of cells of a type rather than specific individual cells. In this way the system is made insensitive to minor variations in shape, size, or orientation of the cells. A Poisson shot-noise model for blood cells as a spatial random process is employed to calculate the far-field scattering from the cells. Results of experiments in which the percentage of reticulated (immature) red cells present in a smear has been determined are presented. The identification and counting accuracies compare favorably with those obtained by laboratory technicians with a microscope. The potential time saving of instantaneous estimation for the entire smear is significant.  相似文献

The effect of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in fiber optic communications is considered. On one hand, SRS limits the launch power in a multiple-channel communication system; while on the other hand, SRS can provide optical amplification in the 1.3-μm and 1.55-μm windows. In most of the previous work these issues have been treated separately by using different assumptions. A solution is usually obtained by solving differential equations. We present a numerical method that involves the simultaneous solution of integral equations describing SRS in optical fiber. The method is general enough to be applicable for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), optic frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), and optical amplification. However, it is efficient and simple to program and uses just a few realistic assumptions. A WDM communication system with 10 optical channels in the 1.55-μm window is studied by using this method, The data rate is above 1 Gbps. The system parameters are such that the other nonlinear effects, such as stimulated Brillouin scattering and four-wave mixing, are less significant for the system. Launch power limitations imposed by SRS are investigated for IM / DD and coherent systems. The receiver dynamic range over the wavelengths of interest is an important factor in determining the launch power limitations. An optical amplifier in the 1.3-μm window is also analyzed. The two-pump technique is investigated. With pump power levels of about 500 mw 0-dB gain can be achieved for a 30-km repeaterless link. Finally, the calculated results agree with the experiments.  相似文献

Classical vehicle routing problems typically do not consider the impact of delivery price on the demand for delivery services. Existing models seek the minimum sum of tour lengths in order to serve the demands of a given set of customers. This paper proposes approximation models to estimate the impacts of price on delivery services when demand for delivery service is price dependent. Such models can serve as useful tools in the planning phase for delivery service providers and can assist in understanding the economics of delivery services. These models seek to maximize profit from delivery service, where price determines demand for deliveries as well as the total revenue generated by satisfying demand. We consider a variant of the model in which each customer’s delivery volume is price sensitive, as well as the case in which customer delivery volumes are fixed, but the total number of customers who select the delivery service provider is price sensitive. A third model variant allows the delivery service provider to select a subset of delivery requests at the offered price in order to maximize profit.  相似文献

With the increasing emphasis on supply chain vulnerabilities, effective mathematical tools for analyzing and understanding appropriate supply chain risk management are now attracting much attention. This paper presents a stochastic model of the multi-stage global supply chain network problem, incorporating a set of related risks, namely, supply, demand, exchange, and disruption. We provide a new solution methodology using the Moreau–Yosida regularization, and design an algorithm for treating the multi-stage global supply chain network problem with profit maximization and risk minimization objectives.  相似文献

A novel compact microstrip fed dual-band coplanar antenna for wireless local area network is presented. The antenna comprises of a rectangular center strip and two lateral strips printed on a dielectric substrate and excited using a 50 Omega microstrip transmission line. The antenna generates two separate resonant modes to cover 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands. Lower resonant mode of the antenna has an impedance bandwidth (2:1 VSWR) of 330 MHz (2190-2520 MHz), which easily covers the required bandwidth of the 2.4 GHz WLAN, and the upper resonant mode has a bandwidth of 1.23 GHz (4849-6070 MHz), covering 5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands. The proposed antenna occupy an area of 217 mm2 when printed on FR4 substrate (epsivr=4.7). A rigorous experimental study has been conducted to confirm the characteristics of the antenna. This paper is concerned with properties of the wave speed for the stochastically perturbed Fisher–Kolmogorov–Petrovsky–Piscunov (FKPP) equation. It was shown in the classical 1937 paper by Kolmogorov, Petrovsky and Piscunov that the large time behavior of the solution to the FKPP equation with Heaviside initial data is a travelling wave. In a seminal 1995 paper Mueller and Sowers proved that this also holds for a stochastically perturbed FKPP equation. The wave speed depends on the strength σ of the noise. In this paper bounds on the asymptotic behavior of the wave speed c(σ) as σ→0 and σ→∞ are obtained.  相似文献

Novel tricontinuous membranes consisting of well‐defined hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and lipophilic polyisobutylene (PIB) segments crosslinked by oxyphilic poly(pentamethylcyclopentasiloxane) (PD5) domains have been synthesized and characterized. Tricontinuity arises because the three membrane constituents—PEG, PIB, and PD5—are mutually incompatible and give rise to three independent cocontinuous phases (channels). The continuous PEG segments impart swelling in water (hydrogel character), the rubbery PIB moieties provide strength, and the PD5 domains provide crosslinking and enhanced O2 permeability. The synthesis involves the random cohydrosilation of various lengths (number‐average molecular weights) of α,ω‐diallyl‐PEG and α,ω‐diallyl‐PIB segments by pentamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5H) followed by water‐mediated oxidation of the SiH groups of the D5H to SiOH groups, which immediately polycondense to PD5 domains. Membranes containing about equal amounts of PEG, PIB, and PD5 give rise to tricontinuous morphologies that allow the simultaneous permeation of water, heptane, and oxygen via three cocontinuous channels. The number‐average molecular weight of the PEG segment, that is, the number‐average molecular weight of the hydrophilic segment between two PD5 crosslink sites, determines the dimensions (pore sizes) of the channels through which water can permeate. A method has been developed for studying the oxygen permeability of membranes. The microarchitecture of the membranes has been investigated with selective swelling experiments and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, their mechanical properties have been examined in the water‐swollen state with Instron measurements, and their bulk morphologies and thermal degradation have been determined with differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Research on virtual groups reflects concerns about the development of trust and liking and about the performance of partners who do not see each other or work proximally. Previous studies have explored behaviors leading to subjectively experienced trust and/or liking, or trusting behaviors associated with group output, but have not linked behaviors, subjective affect, and output quality. Deriving principles from the social information processing theory of computer-mediated communication, this research identified and tested six communication rules for virtual groups. Employing a quasi-experimental procedure to maximize the variance in rule-following behavior, some distributed groups in a cross-university course were assigned to follow rules as part of their grades on group assignments conducted using computer-mediated communication from which messages were collected and later coded. Through self-reported measures of rule following and affect, results reveal correlations between each rule with trust and liking. Less consistent are the relationships between rule following, specific observed behaviors, and actual performance quality. Interpretations suggest that a powerful set of collaboration rules has been identified or that the mere following of any rules and norms reduces uncertainty and enhances trust in distributed work teams.  相似文献

This study investigates the media's potential to affect audiences' interpretations of news events. It compares perceptions of the causes of the 1996 presidential election outcome across four media consumption groups: listeners to the program of Rush Limbaugh, listeners to other political talk radio, consumers of mainstream news media, and nonconsumers of news media. Limbaugh listeners were more likely to discount substantive election explanations than were consumers of other types of political talk radio, consumers of mainstream news media, and nonconsumers of news media. These differences in interpretation parallel differences between the content of his program and that of other media.  相似文献

Calcium imaging using fluorescence lifetimes and long-wavelength probes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We describe imaging of calcium concentrations using the long-wavelength Ca2+ indicators, Calcium Green, Orange, and Crimson. The lifetimes of these probes were measured using the frequency-domain method and were found to increase from 50% to severalfold in response to calcium. The two-dimensional images of the calcium concentration were obtained using a new apparatus for fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM). We also describe procedures to correct for the position-dependent frequency response of the gain-modulated image intensifier used in the FLIM apparatus. Importantly, the FLIM method does not require the probe to display shifts in the excitation or emission spectra. Using the FLIM method, calcium imaging is possible using probes which display changes in lifetime in response to calcium. Consequently, calcium imaging is possible with excitation wavelengths ranging from 488 to as long as 620 nm, where autofluorescence and/or photochemical damage is minimal. These probes are also suitable for calcium measurements of single cells using lifetime-based flow cytometry.  相似文献
