The Spectrophotometric Determination of Gallium (III) with Glycine Thymol Blue

The reaction between gallium (III) and glycine thymol blue has been studied spectrophoptometrically in order to establish the optimum conditions for determining traces of gallium. The gallium (III) glycine thymol blue complex has an absorption maximum at 560 nm against a reagent blank and is stable between pH 4.0 and 5.5. The complex has a composition 1 : 2 and a formation constant of 6.4×10⁷ under the conditions studied. Beer's law is obeyed upto 126 μg of gallium. The net molar absorptivity has been found to be 11,000. The present method is very sensitive and rapid. Anions such as citrate and tartrate inhibit the colour development of the complex.     

Studies on polymerization of vinyl acetate using ylide as an initiator and degradative transfer agent

Polymerization of vinyl acetate initiated by β-picolinium p-chlorophenacylide was carried out at 30, 35, and 40°C, using conventional dilatometric technique. The initiator and the monomer exponent values were 0.80 ± 0.15 and unity, respectively. The polymerization was inhibited in the presence of hydroquinone, but was favored by nonpolar solvent and polymerization temperature. The energy of activation was 90.3 KJ mol^?1. An average value of k/k_t for the present system was found to be 0.37 × 10^?2. The results are explained in terms of a radical mode of polymerization with degradative initiator transfer; the principal mode of termination, however, was bimolecular.     

Optimization of culture parameters for production of podophyllotoxin in suspension culture of Podophyllum hexandrum

The root explants of the germinated seedlings of Podophyllum hexandrum were grown in MS medium supplemented with indole acetic acid (IAA) (2 mg/L) and activated charcoal (0.5%), and healthy callus culture was obtained after incubation for 3 wk at 20°C. The cultivation of plant cells in shake flask was associated with problems such as clumping of cells and browning of media, which were solved by the addition of pectinase and polyvinylpyrrolidone. The effect of major media components and carbon source was studied on the growth and podophyllotoxin production in suspension culture. It was found that glucose was a better carbon source than sucrose and that NH₄ ⁺:NO₃ ⁻ ratio (total nitrogen concentration of 60 mM) and PO₄ ³⁻ did not have much effect on the growth and product formation. The relative effect of culture parameters (inoculum level, pH, IAA, glucose, NH₄ ⁺:NO₃ ⁻ ratio, and PO₄ ³⁻) on the overall growth and product response of the plant cell suspension culture was further investigated by Plackett-Burman design. This indicated that inoculum level, glucose, IAA, and pH had significant effects on growth and production of podophyllotoxin. To identify the exact optimum concentrations of these parameters on culture growth and podophyllotoxin production, central composite design experiments were formulated. The overall response equations with respect to growth and podophyllotoxin production as a function of these culture parameters were developed and used to determine the optimum concentrations of these parameters, which were pH 6.0, 1.25 mg/L of IAA, 72 g/L of glucose, and inoculum level of 8 g/L.     

The complexes of aluminium,gallium, and indium with calmagite: Evaluation of stepwise stability constants

Summary Calmagite [1-(1-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-phenyl azo)-2-naphthol sulphonic acid], dissociates in two steps. It forms violet complexes with Al³⁺, Ga³⁺ and In³⁺. The stepwise proton-ligand stability constants of calmagite and stepwise metal-ligand stability constants of these complexes were evaluated by potentiometric titration technique ofBjerrum andIrving andRossotti. The order of the stabilities of complexes is In³⁺ > Ga³⁺ > > Al³⁺.

Zusammenfassung Camalgit [1-(1-Hydroxy-4-methyl-2-phenylazo)-2-naphtholsulfonsäure] dissoziiert in zwei Stufen und bildet violette Komplexe mit Al(III), Ga(III) und In(III). Die Konstanten der Dissoziationsstufen der freien Säure und die der Metallkomplexe wurden potentiometrisch nachBjerrum bzw.Irving undRossotti ermittelt. Die Stabilität der Komplexe nimmt in der Reihe In(III) > Ga(III) > Al(III) ab.

     

Poly(vinyl acetate) as a template for the radical polymerization of acrylonitrile

The template polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) along with atactic-poly(vinyl acetate) of M _v (47,090), at 60°C for 120 min in dimethyl formamide (DMF) has been studied dilatometrically to study the effects of template, monomer, and initiator (benzoyl peroxide) concentration upon kinetics. Viscometric measurements showed that complexation between at-PVAc and PAN was maximum when template/polymer ratio was 1:1 and time required for complete complexation was 15 min. The overall energy of activation was 57.76 and 77.01 kJ/mol in the presence and absence of, PVAc, respectively. The overall system follows mechanism I, i.e., the monomer molecules get adsorbed on the surface of the template macromolecules and then propagation proceeds.     

Radical polymerization of styrene initiated by styrene–arsenic sulfide complex

Styrene forms a complex with arsenic sulfide which in DMF at 85°C initiates radical polymerization yielding high molecular weight polymer. The order of reaction, with respect to initiator and monomer, is 0.5 ± 0.02 and unity, respectively. The energy of activation for the system computed as 96 kJ mol^?1 and the polymerization is retarded by hydroquinone. A possible mechanism for reaction has also been proposed.     

Spectroscopic correlation for OH stretching frequency shifts of water in crystal hydrates

The shift of the uncoupled OH stretching frequency of water (from its free state position) in crystal hydrates has been plotted against a parameter r⁰ obtained by subtracting the H-bond (OH...Y) length from the sum of the free state ionic radii of O and Y. From an analysis of this curve it is inferred that MO_w coordination in hydrates reduces the ionic size of water oxygen and its effect on the OH stretching frequency is opposite to that of H-bonding.     

Potential cerebral perfusion agents. Synthesis and evaluation of berberine analogues

The synthesis and tissue distribution studies in rats of tetra[³H]-hydroberberine ([³H] 2 ) and 8-(p-[¹²⁵I]iodobenzyl)tetrahydroberberine ([¹²⁵I] 6 ) are described. Compound 2 was synthesized by sodium borohydride reduction of berberine hydrochloride ( 1 ). Treatment of berberine hydrochloride with p-bromo-benzylmagnesium bromide gave 8-(p-bromobenzyl)dihydroberberine ( 4 ) which after sodium borohydride reduction and iodine-125 bromine exchange gave [¹²⁵I] 6 . The unsubstituted tetrahydro compound [³H] 2 showed significantly higher brain uptake (2.2% dose/gm after 5 minutes) as compared to the corresponding 8-substituted derivative [¹²⁵I] 6 . Both radiolabeled compounds washed out from the brain relatively quickly.     

Spectrophotometric determination of palladium(II) with 2-diethylaminoethanethiol hydrochloride and the simultaneous determination of rhodium and palladium

2-Diethylaminoethanethiol hydrochloride is proposed for spectrophotometric determination of palladium(II). The sensitivity of the reaction is 0.0085 smg/cm² and the yellow colored complex shows absorption maxima at 258 mμ and 303 mμ. Color development is slow in the cold but complete after heating for 10–15 min. The optimum pH range is 3.5 to 5.5 and the system adheres to Beer's law between 0.2 and 16.8 p.p.m. of palladium. The average and maximum relative standard deviations were 0.60% and 1.40% respectively. Interferences due to other platinum metals were studied and a procedure is suggested for the simultaneous determination of rhodium and palladium.     

Thermodynamic and lfer studies for the oxidation of anilines by the periodate ion

The various thermodynamic parameters for the periodate oxidation of six anilines, viz. aniline, p-chloroaniline, p-ethoxyaniline, o- and p-methoxyanilines and p-methylaniline have been reported and discussed. The validity of the isokinetic relationship and various linear free energy relationships (LFERs) have been tested and discussed. An attempt has been made to correlate these findings with the mechanism operative in these reactions.
