Dynamic programming in cricket: optimizing batting order for a sticky wicket

In cricket, a rain-affected pitch can make batting more difficult than normal. Several other conditions such as poor light or an initially lively pitch, may also result in difficulties for the batsmen. In this note, we refer to all of them as ‘sticky wickets’. On sticky wickets, lower order batsmen are often sent into ‘hold the fort’ until conditions improve. In this paper, a stochastic dynamic programming model is used to examine the appropriateness of this policy. The model suggests that the tactic is often optimal when the sticky wicket persists until the end of the day's play, but not often when the sticky wicket is transitory. In some circumstances, it is worthwhile, on a normal wicket near the end of the day, to send in a lower order batsman to hold the fort (a night watchman): when the wicket is sticky, this tactic is even more worthwhile.     

A few points on omnidirectional band gaps in one-dimensional photonic crystals

The universal condition for the formation of omnidirectional band gaps (OBG) in photonic crystal (PC) was derived with consideration of permeability of the materials. And it was found that there are four kinds of PCs: one of them has no OBG, and one always possesses OBG. For the other two kinds of PCs, there are OBG for only TM or TE waves respectively. Moreover, in all PCs, the OBG can be broadened by decreasing the refractive index of the ambient medium or/and increasing the contrast between the wave impedances of the component materials of the PC. 光电倍增管脉冲性能研究

采用外腔式电光开光,调制主动照相探测光源,使光电倍增管处于脉冲工作状态下,以提高光电倍增管的输出幅度和动态范围,改善信号的信噪比,同时避免样品和探测器受长时间强激光照射.对滨松H6780光电倍增管进行了调试,使其线性输出电流由静态的0.1mA提升到脉冲状态的4.4mA,信噪比提高4.5倍.该技术对其他光敏探测有借鉴意义.     

A VLSI CMOS delay oriented waveform converter for polyphasefrequency synthesizer

In this paper, we present a waveform converter implemented on a 0.25-μm CMOS technology using a dedicated design methodology (Delay Oriented Design). The circuit converts a square wave signal in both in-phase and quadrature-phase sinusoidal differential outputs. It also multiplies the frequency by seven. The output frequency range of this converter extends from 1.05 GHz up to 2.17 GHz. This converter is dedicated for the design of a third-generation mobile phone synthesizer using a double-loop architecture. For an output frequency of 2 GHz, the measured phase noise at 10-kHz offset from the carrier is -97 dBc/Hz. The circuit consumes 50 mW from a 2.5-V supply     

Giant shot-like voltage noise in high current density Nb–AlOx–Nb superconducting tunnel junctions

The flat voltage noise component of current biased, high-transparency Nb/AlO_x/Nb superconducting tunnel junctions has been investigated at frequencies up to 70 kHz. Several aspects of the analyzed phenomena suggest the presence of current noise effects induced by the discreteness of the charge carriers. At subgap voltages, where excess currents occur, a behavior coherent with a multiple Andreev reflection-assisted transport through the tunnel barrier has been found. However, the measured charge values exceed any theoretical prediction.     

Magnetic anisotropy of textured CrO2 thin films investigated by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Highly a-axis-textured CrO₂ films have been deposited on Al₂O₃ (0001) substrates by chemical vapor deposition. CrO₂ has been found to have highly a-axis (010)-oriented columnar growth on a Cr₂O₃ (0001) initial layer. The six-fold surface symmetry of the Cr₂O₃ initial layer leads to three equivalent in-plane orientations of the a-axis-oriented CrO₂ unit cell. We report Cr L_2,3 X-ray magnetic circular dichroism data along the surface normal and at 60° off-normal sample orientation. For a 60° sample alignment, a strong increase of the projected orbital moment could be observed for unoccupied majority t_2g states using moment analysis. Therefore, the c axis is identified as the intrinsic magnetic easy axis of CrO₂. In addition, a small spin moment and a very strong magnetic dipole term T_z have been found. The time recovery of the spectroscopic properties of heavily irradiated CdZnTe and CdTe detectors

The time recovery of the spectroscopic capabilities of CdZnTe and CdTe detectors, irradiated with increasing doses of high- and low-energy neutrons, as well as electrons, has been investigated by studying their spectroscopic behavior at different photon energies using leakage current measurements and PICTS (photo-induced current transient spectroscopy) analysis. The detectors were stored at room temperature for up to one year to study the time evolution of their spectroscopic performance and to correlate it with the presence of defective states in the material. We have observed a clear improvement in the material’s detection properties with time, though only in those detectors which have not been severely degraded by the irradiation. The recovery can be associated with a decrease in the concentration of some defective states, thus allowing the assessment of the crucial role these play in determining the charge collection processes in the material and its spectroscopic capabilities. Q operators for the simple quantum relativistic Toda Chain

We investigate the simple quantum relativistic Toda chain. The ultralocal simple Weyl algebra pair is associated with each site of the chain. Weyl’s q is considered to be inside a unit circle. Both independent Baxter operators Q are constructed explicitly as series in local Weyl generators. The operator-valued Wronskian of Q-s is also calculated.
