CHOICE OF COATINGS FOR THE OPTICAL ELEMENTS IN THE IRRADIATION SYSTEM OF VACUUM-ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION ABOVE 50 nm

The spectral throughput of a vacuum-ultraviolet irradiation system at the SOR-RING facility was examined with various combinations of aluminum-and gold-coated optical elements in a 2.2-m modified Wadsworth monochromator. We found that the optimum was a combination of an aluminum-coated collimating mirror, concave grating, and plane deflecting mirror, and a combination of a gold-coated collimating mirror, concave grating and an aluminum-coated plane deflecting mirror in the wavelength regions 190-110 nm and 110-50 nm, respectively.     

Dioxopyrrolines. LXII. Diels-Alder reaction of 1-Aryl-4- and 5-methoxycarbonyl-1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones with various 1,3-dienes

Two new dioxopyrrolines (1-aryl-4-methoxycarbonyl-1H-pyrrole-2,3-dione 6 and the 5-methoxycarbonyl isomer 8) behaved as good dienophiles to some kind of 1,3-dienes examined. In most cases, the products were explained by the reaction where the largest lobe of HOMO of dienes reacted to the larger LUMO of dienophiles in an expected cis-endo manner. However, in the reactions of 8 with alkylbutadienes, piperylene and isoprene, abnormality in the reaction was observed, which was well explained by taking account of steric factors.     

He I (584 Å) photoelectron spectra and photoionization cross sections of atomic chlorine and bromine

Well-resolved He I photoelectron spectra of atomic chlorine and bromine have been obtained without serious background electrons, giving rise to relative photoelectron intensities associated with differential photoionization cross sections at an angle of 90° with respect to the incident 584 Å radiation.     

Affinity transformation from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity of water molecules on the basis of adsorption of water in graphitic nanopores

The interaction of water with hydrophobic surfaces is quite important in a variety of chemical and biochemical phenomena. The coexistence of water and oil can be realized by introduction of surfactants. In the case of water vapor adsorption on graphitic nanopores, plenty of water can be adsorbed in graphitic nanopores without surfactants, although the graphitic surface is not hydrophilic. Why are water molecules adsorbed in hydrophobic nanopores remarkably? This work can give an explicit insight to water adsorption in hydrophobic graphite nanopores using experimental and theoretical approaches. Water molecules are associated with each other to form the cluster of 1 nm in size, leading to a significant stabilization of the cluster in the graphitic nanopores. This mechanism can be widely applied to interfacial phenomena relating to coexistence of water and nanostructural materials of hydrophobicity.     

One-step furan ring formation: Synthesis of furo[3,2-h]quinolones

The one-pot reaction of ethyl 1-cyclopropyl-6,7,8-trifluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylate ( 6 ) with tert-butyl acetoacetate gave 3-tert-butyl 7-ethyl 9-cyclopropyl-4-fluoro-6,9-dihydro-2-methyl-6-oxofuro[3,2-h]quinoline-3,7-dicarboxylate ( 5 ). This regioselective cyclization was rationalized by the Hard and Soft Acids and Bases principle. By use of a similar furan-forming reaction, we prepared 2-(amino-methyl)furo[3,2-h]quinoline-7-carboxylic acid 4 . Compound 4 showed weak antibacterial activity.     

From penicillin to penem and carbapenem. VI1) : Synthesis of dethiathienamycin

A new C₃-unit substitution reaction at C-4 position of 4- acetoxyazetidinone derivative ($\text{1}$ and $\text{5}$) by tetraallyltin ($\text{2}$) in the presence of 1/10 eq. of BF₃-ether in methylene chloride is described. From 4-allylazetidinone derivative ($\text{3}$) via ylid intermediate ($\text{14}$) dethiathienamycin ($\text{16}$) was synthesized.     

Conjugate addition of grignard reagents to N-(α,β-unsaturated)acylpyrazoles. Diastereoselective β-alkylation using 3-phenyl-l-menthopyrazole

The conjugate additions of N-(α,β-unsaturated)acylpyrazoles were carried out by the treatment with Grignard reagents in the presence of cuprous halides. The reaction of 2-(α,β-unsaturated)acyl-3-phenyl-l-menthopyrazoles 3a-h occurred in higher chemical yields and with asymmetric inductions on β-position, where the addition of magnesium bromide as a Lewis acid influenced to the yields and the diastereoselectivities. In the case of α-methylated 2-(α,β-unsaturated)acyl-3-phenyl-l-menthopyrazoles 3i-n , the excellent asymmetric induction on the α-position was also observed through the diastereofacial protonation.     

Rapid colorimetric determination of manganese in waters containing iron : A modification of the formaldoxime method

A rapid photometric method with formaldoxime is described for the determination of small amounts of manganese in waters containing iron. The iron formaldoxime formed is decomposed by addition of EDTA and hydroxylamine after development of the manganese-formaldoxime color. Beer's law holds up to 3 mg Mn/1. Up to 25 mg iron(II) or (III) per 1 can be tolerated.     

Close-packed C(70)(3-) phases - synthesis, structure, and electronic properties

The high symmetry and resulting electronic degeneracy of the C(60)(3)(-) anion is viewed as the key molecular feature in the high superconducting transition temperatures of fulleride and oxidized fullerene systems. The experimental evaluation of this hypothesis requires the synthesis of face-centered cubic (fcc) trivalent fulleride anion salts derived from higher fullerenes such as C(70), which have thus far proved elusive with only stable A(1)C(70), A(4)C(70), and A(6)C(70) phases known. In this paper, we report the synthesis of fcc A(3)C(70) phases stabilized by size-matching the tetrahedral site with the sodium cation. The structures are strongly dependent on the cooling protocol due to the existence of metastable partially or completely orientationally disordered phases. EPR data indicate that the phases are metallic but not superconducting. The densities of states at the Fermi level appear too low to give superconductivity at above 5 K, consistent with recent observations that four electrons per C(70) anion are required for superconductivity. Size-matching on both the octahedral and tetrahedral sites is required for A(3)C(70) stability - K(2)CsC(70) is only stable at elevated temperature and Na(2)C(70) is unstable, the composition corresponding to C(70) and a sodium-rich trigonal phase.
