Multiple dual-wavelengths fiber ring laser utilizing a phase-only sampled fiber Bragg grating with multiple phase-shifts inserted

A simple technique to multiply the lasing wavelength in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based fiber ring laser is proposed and demonstrated, which is based on the utilization of a multiple phase-shifts sampled fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Tunability for the wavelength spacing within all dual-wavelengths has also been demonstrated by changing the positions of phase-shifts. Moreover, more than 20 dual-wavelengths fiber lasers with a 3-dB linewidth of 0.017 nm and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of about 45 dB have been obtained.     

Imaging findings of solitary fibrous tumor of the prostate: a case report

The imaging findings of a solitary fibrous tumor of the prostate are presented. A 35-year-old male presented with urinary retention and was found on transrectal ultrasonography to have a hypoechoic tumor of the prostate, measuring 5.5 cm in size. Magnetic resonance imaging on, the tumor showed low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and heterogeneous mixed signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Gadolinium-enhanced dynamic study showed gradual enhancement from the periphery to the center, and the enhancement is sustained. On immunohistochemistry, the spindle cells of the tumor showed positive staining for CD34 and bcl-2. Although the tumor was labeled as a low-grade malignancy on account of a low mitotic index (MIB-1 index) of about 5%, the patient developed local recurrence of the tumor with bladder wall invasion 12 months later.     

Quantitative analysis of protein adsorption on a planar surface by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy: lysozyme adsorbed on hydrophobic silicon-containing polymer

The adsorption of hen egg white lysozyme onto a solid polytris(trimethylsiloxy)silylstyrene (pTSS) surface from a D(2)O solution at pD 7 containing 100 mM NaCl and 10 mM sodium deuterated phosphate was monitored at 25 degrees C by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) method. The infrared spectrum attributed to only the adsorbed lysozyme was derived from the observed spectrum, and the amount of adsorbed lysozyme was determined as a function of time and lysozyme concentration. The kinetics of adsorption could be decomposed into two components, one of which was a process with a time constant of larger than 4 h(-1) and the other was a process with one of about 0.1 h(-1). These spectra showed that the lysozyme adsorbed in the faster process had a higher beta-structure content than the dissolved lysozyme. It was also found that the slower adsorption induced some conformational change in the lysozyme adsorbed in the faster process and/or that adsorbed in the slower process. After adsorption for 24 h, the pTSS surface was rinsed out with lysozyme-free solution. The resultant spectra of the surface indicated that the lysozyme adsorbed in the faster process was bound irreversibly on the surface and was changed to a conformer with a higher beta-structure content during the slower process. The experimental procedures and the theoretical applications for such a quantitative analysis in the ATR spectroscopic method are presented in detail.     

Novel synthesis of polyethers by the polyaddition of bis(epoxide)s with bis(phosphinate)s

The polyaddition of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether with bis[4‐(P,P‐diphenylphosphinyloxy)phenyl] sulfone catalyzed by quaternary onium salt, such as tetrabutylammonium chloride afforded a new phosphorus‐containing polyether with good solubility in common organic solvents. Having studied various factors affecting the reaction, such as temperature, catalyst concentration, reaction time, etc., an appropriate polyaddition condition was suggested as using 5 mol % of suitable quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt in polar solvent at 150°C within 25 h in an ampule for producing high molecular weight polymer. A number of polyethers bearing pendent phosphinate ester groups from the polyaddition of certain bis(epoxide)s and bis(phosphinate)s were synthesized under the above condition and characterized by GPC, IR, and NMR. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Synthesis of polymers in aqueous solutions: Esterification reaction of poly(methacrylic acid) with alkyl halides using DBU in aqueous solutions

A convenient esterification reaction of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) with certain alkyl halides was performed using 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]-7-undecene (DBU) as a base in aqueous solution or in water. The esterification reaction of PMAA with propargyl bromide (PB) proceeded very smoothly and quantitatively at 30°C to give corresponding poly(propargyl methacrylate), although the rate of the reaction decreased with increasing water. The reaction of PMAA with benzyl bromide, o-nitrobenzyl bromide, and p-nitrobenzyl bromide gave corresponding poly(methacrylic ester) using DBU under suitable reaction conditions in water. The esterification reactions of PMAA with PB were carried out using certain organic bases such as triethylamine, 4(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine and pyridine. Inorganic bases such as sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, and potassium hydroxide were also tried under the same conditions as with DBU. However, the degrees of estrification with all these bases was much lower than that with DBU. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Synthesis and thermal crosslinking reaction of polymers containing pendant carboxyl and epoxy groups

Polymers containing both pendant carboxyl and epoxy groups were synthesized by the radical copolymerization of p-vinylbenzyl glycidyl ether (VBGE) and itaconic acid monomethyl ester (IAME). The copolymerization proceeded smoothly under various conditions, and polymer soluble in 1,4-dioxane with no gel fraction was obtained. However, the carboxyl-epoxy addition reaction between VBGE and IAME was observed, when DMSO or DMF were used as polymerization solvents. The IR and ¹H-NMR spectrum of copolymers of VBGE and IAME showed the corresponding structure. The thermal crosslinking reaction of the resulting copolymers was examined under various conditions. Tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) showed catalytic activity for the reaction. However, a 100% gel fraction of polymer was achieved after only 15 min without any catalyst, when the crosslinking reaction was performed at 150°C. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Synthesis and photochemical properties of novel multifunctional photopolymers with both pendant epoxy groups and phenacyl ester groups

Novel multifunctional photopolymers with both pendant epoxy groups and phenacyl ester groups were synthesized by the one‐pot method for the reaction of poly(methacrylic acid) with epibromohydrin; this was followed by a reaction with phenacylbromide with 1,8‐diazabicyclo‐[5.4.0]undecene‐7 as a condensation reagent. These esterification reactions proceeded smoothly and quantitatively under mild conditions. Moreover, the photochemical reactions of the resulting polymers were evaluated by UV and IR spectroscopy. The pendant phenacyl ester groups were photocleaved to give corresponding carboxyl groups, and then the produced carboxyl groups reacted with pendant epoxy groups. Furthermore, the baking process promoted a crosslinking reaction because of the addition reaction of epoxy groups with carboxyl groups after irradiation. It was also proven that the photochemical reactivity of the resulting polymers was affected by the structure of the phenacyl ester group. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Structure and stereochemistry of the higher bile acid isolated from turtle bile: (22S,25R)-3 alpha,12 alpha,15 alpha,22-tetrahydroxy-5 beta-cholestan-26-oic acid

The structure and stereochemistry of the higher bile acid, tetrahydroxyisosterocholanic acid (TISA), which was previously isolated from the bile of Amyda japonica (turtle) and proposed as a tetrahydroxyisosterocholanic acid, have been established as (22S,25R)-3 alpha,12 alpha,15 alpha,22-tetrahydroxy-5 beta-cholestan-26-oic acid by X-ray crystallographic analysis of its ethyl ester.
