The stationary and time-resolved polariton radiation in ultrahigh quality AIGaAs layers have been studied. It has been found that elastic exciton-exciton collisions lead to the appearance of a low-energy line of polariton radiation. We show that the rate of exciton-to-polariton transitions caused by elastic exciton-exciton collisions is determined not only by the density of the excitonic gas, but also by its temperature; this is in accordance with existing theoretical predictions. Integrating appliances in the home through a wired network often proves to be impractical: routing cables is usually difficult, changing the network structure afterward even more so, and portable devices can only be connected at fixed connection points. Wireless networks are not the answer either: batteries have to be regularly replaced or changed, and what they add to the device's size and weight might be disproportionate for smaller appliances. In Pin&Play, we explore a design space in between typical wired and wireless networks, investigating the use of surfaces to network objects that are attached to it. This article gives an overview of the network model, and describes functioning prototypes that were built as a proof of concept.  相似文献

Self-consistent effects on the starting current of gyrotron oscillators are examined. Field profiles in the open cavity are shown to be sensitive to the interaction dynamics. This can either significantly raise or lower the oscillation threshold, particularly for the low-Q modes. The transition from resonant-mode oscillations at the low magnetic field to backward-wave oscillations at the high magnetic field is demonstrated.  相似文献

It is known that complex digital filters possess certain advantages over real digital filters in processing complex signals such as increased computational speed and efficiency. In this paper, a simple and systematic procedure which can be implemented through a computer program is presented for realizing a specific class of multidimensional (M-D) complex digital filters. The proposed filter structures are derived from analog reference configurations comprising generalized immittance converters and resistors by making use of wave concept. These filters possess many salient properties such as low noise, low sensitivity and capability of realizing multiple transfer functions simultaneously which are inherited from the reference analog filters they are derived from. These features make them attractive for very large-scale integrated (VLSI) implementation. It is shown that the proposed filter structures can be obtained directly from the specified M-D discrete transfer function without the need for realizing any analog reference configuration.  相似文献

We utilize tools from information theory to develop adaptive algorithms for two key problems in cellular networks: location tracking and resource management. The use of information theory is motivated by the fundamental observation that overheads in many aspects of mobile computing can be traced to the randomness or uncertainty in an individual user's movement behavior. We present a model-independent information-theoretic approach for estimating and managing this uncertainty, and relate it to the entropy or information content of the user's movement process. Information-theoretic mobility management algorithms are very simple, yet reduce overhead by /spl sim/80 percent in simulated scenarios by optimally adapting to each individual's movement. These algorithms also allow for flexible tradeoff between location update and paging costs. Simulation results demonstrate how an information-theory-motivated resource provisioning strategy can meet QoS bounds with very small wastage of resources, thus dramatically reducing the overall blocking rate.  相似文献

A signal intensity based maximum-likelihood (ML) target location estimator that uses quantized data is proposed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The signal intensity received at local sensors is assumed to be inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the target. The ML estimator and its corresponding Crameacuter-Rao lower bound (CRLB) are derived. Simulation results show that this estimator is much more accurate than the heuristic weighted average methods, and it can reach the CRLB even with a relatively small amount of data. In addition, the optimal design method for quantization thresholds, as well as two heuristic design methods, are presented. Contact-expressive devices could improve our lives-from practical improvements that let us interact with devices when other modalities are impossible, inappropriate, or inadequate to devices that have important consequences for physical well-being. We can also imagine using contact expressions in devices that are pleasurable, playful, artistic, or otherwise important to a human's experience. This paper discusses the technical development of sensor-motor systems, tactile interfaces, and technologies that can embody and understand affect. Contact-expressive devices are technologies that understand and use touch in meaningful ways-that can distinguish between a press and a caress. Also discussed are the following issues: technical requirements and the nature of contact expressions. Although a fairly large body of research exists regarding nonverbal communication, the majority of this work is on visual expression (facial expressions, physical appearance, direction of gaze, physical posture, and other visible forms of body language) and paralinguistics (such as vocal inflection, pitch, volume, and speech rate). Work needs to begin on studies of human contact with the goal of leveraging those insights for the design of contact-expressive devices-and work needs to begin on the implementation of technologies that have rich contact-expressive range and appeal.  相似文献

A novel approach for estimating the parameters of a multifrequency signal from discrete samples corrupted by additive noise is presented. An established mathematical model indicates that noise influence on the discrete phase and amplitude spectra is equivalent to additive phase and amplitude noise, respectively. On this basis, a simple algorithm is proposed to estimate the frequency and phase of each sinusoid component by linear regression on the phase spectra of segmented signal blocks, while an amplitude estimator is directly derived from the spectrum of the window function. The circular nature of the phase spectrum is thoroughly explored. Also, an algorithmic scheme is presented. The derived variances of the estimators show that for a noisy signal this approach provides superior accuracy over the traditional approaches. Simulations and engineering application confirm the validity of the presented method.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a new economics-based power-aware protocol, called the distributed economic subcontracting protocol (DESP) that dynamically distributes task computation among mobile devices in an ad hoc wireless network. Mobile computation devices may be energy buyers, contractors, or subcontractors. Tasks are transferred between devices via distributed bargaining and transactions. When additional energy is required, buyers and contractors negotiate energy prices within their local markets. Contractors and subcontractors spend communication and computation energy to relay or execute buyers' tasks. Buyers pay the negotiated price for this energy. Decision-making algorithms are proposed for buyers, contractors, and subcontractors, each of which has a different optimization goal. We have built a wireless network simulator, called ESIM, to assist in the design and analysis of these algorithms. When the average communication energy required transferring a task is less than the average energy required to execute a task, our experimental results indicate that markets based on our protocol and decision-making algorithms fairly and effectively allocate energy resources among different tasks in both cooperative and competitive scenarios.  相似文献
