The loss performance of tagged and normal ATM cells at a first-in-first-out (FIFO) buffer is studied. The authors show that if a partial buffer sharing mechanism is adopted the loss probability of normal cells can be firmly guaranteed, regardless of the traffic intensity of tagged cells

Thermo-acoustic effects on images for high resolution scanning acoustic microscopy

A novel scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) technique employing thermal effects to improve the contrast of acoustic images has been demonstrated. Experiments were performed on a buried channel in a thick perspex block; it was found that short periods of sample heating can lead to a stronger image contrast.<>     

Multipoint communication: a survey of protocols, functions, andmechanisms

Group communication supports information transfer between a set of participants. It is becoming more and more relevant in distributed environments. For distributed or replicated data, it provides efficient communication without overloading the network. For some types of multimedia applications, it is the only way to control data transmission to group members. This paper surveys protocol functions and mechanisms for data transmission within a group, from multicast routing problems up to end-to-end multipoint transmission control. Geometric quantization of topological gauge theories

We show that Abelian gauge theories in 2+1 space-time dimensions with the introduction of a topological Chern-Simons term can be quantized with the use of the symplectic formalism. The consistency of our results are verified by the agreement with the ones from the Dirac case.     

Optimal algebraic multilevel preconditioning for local refinement along a line

The application of some recently proposed algebraic multilevel methods for the solution of two-dimensional finite element problems on nonuniform meshes is studied. The locally refined meshes are created by the newest vertex mesh refinement method. After the introduction of this refinement technique it is shown that, by combining levels of refinement, a preconditioner of optimal order can be constructed for the case of local refinement along a line. Its relative condition number is accurately estimated. Numerical tests demonstrating the performance of the proposed preconditioners will be reported in a forthcoming paper.
