Synthesis and orientation study of a magnetically aligned liquid‐crystalline chitin/poly(acrylic acid) composite

A high magnetic field of 5 T was used to fabricate a magnetically aligned, optically anisotropic, liquid‐crystalline chitin/poly(acrylic acid) composite. The aligned mesophase was fixed by photoinitiated free‐radical polymerization. From an examination of polarized optical micrographs and an X‐ray diffraction study, a high degree of orientation of 0.70 was observed for the composite with a higher liquid‐crystalline chitin concentration (10.70 wt %); the orientation was reduced with a decreased chitin concentration at a given acrylic acid concentration. The X‐ray data for the developed composite showed a uniplanar orientation for the chitin crystallites, with its molecular long axes perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A facile non-oxidative method for synthesizing 1,3-disubstituted pyrroles from pyrrolidine and aldehydes

Reactions of pyrrolidine with 2 equiv of aldehydes without any catalyst in a pressurized vessel at 140–200 °C yielded 1,3-disubstituted pyrroles. -Branched aldehydes gave fairly good yields of the corresponding products by this method, which provides a facile non-oxidative procedure for synthesizing 1,3-dialkylpyrroles from inexpensive pyrrolidine and aldehydes.     

Co-doped In2O3 thin films: Room temperature ferromagnets

Laser-ablated Co-doped In₂O₃ thin films were fabricated under various growth conditions on R-cut Al₂O₃ and MgO substrates. All Co:In₂O₃ films are well-crystallized, single phase, and room temperature ferromagnetic. Co atoms were well substituted for In atoms, and their distribution is greatly uniform over the whole thickness of the films. Films grown at 550 °C showed the largest magnetic moment of about 0.5 μ_B/Co, while films grown at higher temperatures have magnetic moments of one order smaller. The observed ferromagnetism above room temperature in Co:In₂O₃ thin films has confirmed that doping few percent of magnetic elements such as Co into In₂O₃ could result in a promising magnetic material.     

Fast and continuous chemical isolation of short-lived isotopes of Hf,Ta and W as homologs of elements 104, 105 and 106

Some short-lived isotopes of Hf, Ta and W, synthesized at the U-400 cyclotron of JINR-Dubna, have been isolated using a previously elaborated fast continuous method of chemical isolation of element 104 from nuclear reaction products. The products were transported by a NaCl aerosol jet, from the irradiated targets to a separation device in which Hf, Ta and W were isolated by using three coupled ion-exchange columns.     

Synthesis of oxychelerythrine using lithiated toluamide-benzonitrile cycloaddition

Oxychelerythrine, benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloid, was synthesized from easily available starting toluamide 5 and benzonitrile 6 using toluamide-benzonitrile cycloaddition reaction in 6 steps.     

Trace analysis of rapamycin in human blood by micellar electrokinetic chromatography

A capillary electrophoretic method with UV detection at 278 nm has been developed for analysis of the immunosuppressant rapamycin (sirolimus) in human blood at low microgram per liter levels. Separation has been achieved in an acidic carrier electrolyte containing sodium dodecylsulfate and 30% (v/v) acetonitrile. For sample clean-up and preconcentration, an off-line solid-phase extraction step using a silica-based reversed-phase material and an on-capillary focussing technique were employed. The latter allows the injection of increased sample volumes without excessive band broadening. Although this new method is less sensitive than existing liquid chromatographic procedures combined with mass spectrometry, it is fully suited to routine analysis of rapamycin in blood from patients treated with this drug. Last but not least the low costs make it an attractive alternative to established methods.     

Neosappanone A, a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory dimeric methanodibenzoxocinone with a new carbon skeleton from Caesalpinia sappan

A novel dimeric methanodibenzoxocinone, named neosappanone A (1), possessing a unique unprecedented novel carbon framework, has been isolated from the heartwood of Caesalpinia sappan L. of Vietnam, and its structure was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. Neosappanone A (1) competitively inhibited xanthine oxidase in a concentration-dependent manner (IC₅₀, 29.7 μM; K_i, 16.3 μM).     

Kinetics of the hydrogen abstraction *CH3 + alkane --> CH4 + alkyl reaction class: an application of the reaction class transition state theory

Kinetics of the hydrogen abstraction reaction (*)CH(3) + CH(4) --> CH(4) + (*)CH(3) is studied by a direct dynamics method. Thermal rate constants in the temperature range of 300-2500 K are evaluated by the canonical variational transition state theory (CVT) incorporating corrections from tunneling using the multidimensional semiclassical small-curvature tunneling (SCT) method and from the hindered rotations. These results are used in conjunction with the Reaction Class Transition State Theory/Linear Energy Relationship (RC-TST/LER) to predict thermal rate constants of any reaction in the hydrogen abstraction class of (*)CH(3) + alkanes. Our analyses indicate that less than 40% systematic errors on the average exist in the predicted rate constants using the RC-TST/LER method while comparing to explicit rate calculations the differences are less than 100% or a factor of 2 on the average.     

Application of a new standardization method in activation analysis with registration of soft gamma radiation

An application of a new standardization method for rapid activation mass analysis with registration of the strongly absorbed low-energy gamma radiation is described. This method makes it possible to avoid the use of the time-consuming and laborious method of Internal Standard.
