Lensless diffractive imaging using tabletop coherent high-harmonic soft-X-ray beams

We present the first experimental demonstration of lensless diffractive imaging using coherent soft x rays generated by a tabletop soft-x-ray source. A 29 nm high harmonic beam illuminates an object, and the subsequent diffraction is collected on an x-ray CCD camera. High dynamic range diffraction patterns are obtained by taking multiple exposures while blocking small-angle diffraction using beam blocks of varying size. These patterns reconstruct to images with 214 nm resolution. This work demonstrates a practical tabletop lensless microscope that promises to find applications in materials science, nanoscience, and biology.     

Theory of swimming filaments in viscoelastic media

Motivated by our desire to understand the biophysical mechanisms underlying the swimming of sperm in the non-Newtonian fluids of the female mammalian reproductive tract, we examine the swimming of filaments in the nonlinear viscoelastic upper convected Maxwell model. We obtain the swimming velocity and hydrodynamic force exerted on an infinitely long cylinder with prescribed beating pattern. We use these results to examine the swimming of a simplified sliding-filament model for a sperm flagellum. Viscoelasticity tends to decrease swimming speed, and changes in the beating patterns due to viscoelasticity can reverse swimming direction.     

Electrochemical Vicinal Difluorination of Alkenes: Scalable and Amenable to Electron‐Rich Substrates

Fluorinated alkyl groups are important motifs in bioactive compounds, positively influencing pharmacokinetics, potency and conformation. The oxidative difluorination of alkenes represents an important strategy for their preparation, yet current methods are limited in their alkene‐types and tolerance of electron‐rich, readily oxidized functionalities, as well as in their safety and scalability. Herein, we report a method for the difluorination of a number of unactivated alkene‐types that is tolerant of electron‐rich functionality, giving products that are otherwise unattainable. Key to success is the electrochemical generation of a hypervalent iodine mediator using an “ex‐cell” approach, which avoids oxidative substrate decomposition. The more sustainable conditions give good to excellent yields in up to decagram scales.     

Collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry of nonionic surfactants following direct supercritical fluid injection

Direct injection from a capillary supercritical fluid chromatography system was used as an inlet technique for chemical ionization (CI) and low energy collision-induced dissociation (CID) mass spectrometry of a series of low volatility nonionic surfactant mixtures. Characteristic fragment ions produced by CID for various classes of nonionic surfactant molecules were found to depend greatly on the structure of the surfactant hydrophobe. This was the case even when the charge on the molecule appeared localized away from the hydrophobe. Numerous decomposition pathways are suggested by the fragment ions produced. The use of direct supercritical fluid injection as an inlet technique does not appear to influence adversely the ability to produce cm mass spectra. Direct supercritical fluid introduction allows CI to be compared with other ionization mechanisms more commonly used for multifunctional, low volatility samples.

Score vectors of tournaments

A tournament T on any set X is a dyadic relation such that for any x, y ∈ X (a) (x, x) ? T and (b) if x ≠ y then (x, y) ∈ T iff (y, x) ? T. The score vector of T is the cardinal valued function defined by R(x) = |{y ∈ X : (x, y) ∈ T}|. We present theorems for infinite tournaments analogous to Landau's necessary and sufficient conditions that a vector be the score vector for some finite tournament. Included also is a new proof of Landau's theorem based on a simple application of the “marriage” theorem.     

An SIS waveguide heterodyne receiver for 600 HGz-635 GHz

A waveguide SIS heterodyne receiver using a Nb/AlO_X/Nb junction has been built for astronomical observations of molecular transitions in the frequency range 600 GHz - 635 GHz, and has been successfully used at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). We report double sideband (DSB) receiver noise temperatures as low as 245 K at 600 GHz -610 GHz, and near 300 K over the rest of the bandwidth. These results confirm that SIS quasiparticle mixers work well at submillimeter-wave frequencies corresponding to photon energies of at least 90% of the superconductor energy gap. In addition, we have systematically investigated the effect on the receiver performance of the overlap between first-order and second-order photon steps of opposite sign at these frequencies. The receiver noise increases by as much as 40% in the region of overlap. We infer potential limitations for operating submillimeter-wave Nb/AlO_x/Nb mixers.
