Study on interaction between Tb(III) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

A new kind of the thermo-sensitive and fluorescent complex of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and Tb(III) was synthesized by free radical polymerization, in which PNIPAM was used as a polymer ligand. The complex was characterized by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visual (UV), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results from the experiments indicated that there is a strong interaction between PNIPAM and Tb(III), leading to a decrease in the electron density of nitrogen and oxygen atoms and an increase in the electron density of Tb(III) in the PNIPAM containing Tb(III) by contrast with PNIPAM and Tb(III), respectively, meanwhile, exhibiting that the Tb(III) is mainly bonded to oxygen atoms in the polymer chain of PNIPAM and formed the complex of PNIPAM-Tb(III). After forming the PNIPAM-Tb(III) complex, the emission fluorescence intensity of Tb(III) in the PNIPAM-Tb(III) complex is significantly enhanced because the effective intramolecular energy transfer from PNIPAM to Tb(III). Especially, the emission intensity of the fluorescence peak at 547 nm can be increased as high as 145 times comparing with that of the pure Tb(III). The intramolecular energy transfer efficiency for fluorescence peak at 547 nm can reach as high as 68%. The fluorescence intensity is related the weight ratio of Tb(III) and PNIPAM in the PNIPAM-Tb(III) complex. When the weight ratio is 1.4%, the maximum fluorescence enhancement can be obtained. Nevertheless, the lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM containing a low content of Tb(III) has not obviously changed after the formation of the complex of PNIPAM-Tb(III) by the interaction between PNIPAM and Tb(III). This novel thermosensitive and fluorescence characterization of the PNIPAM-Tb(III) complex may be useful in the fluorescence systems and the biomedical field.     

Piezoelectric PMN-PT fibre hydrophone for ultrasonic transducer calibration

A newly developed ceramic fibre hydrophone with an active element as small as 0.25 mm in diameter is described in this work. Lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) ceramic fibre with a nominal composition of 0.65Pb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O₃-0.35PbTiO₃ was fabricated by an extrusion method. PMN-PT single crystals were ground to a powder form and then mixed with poly(acrylic) acid to form a homogenous slurry. The fibre was extruded by pressing the slurry through a spinneret and then sintering at 1250 °C for crystallization. The electrical characteristics of the PMN-PT fibre were evaluated by measuring the relative permittivity and the impedance spectrum. A piezoelectric PMN-PT fibre hydrophone was fabricated and its sensitivity, angular response, and spatial resolution were evaluated. The fibre hydrophone provides good spatial resolution, angular response and receiving sensitivity. PACS 43.58.+z; 77.84.Dy

Multi-color display and its model for a white OLED combined with optical color filters

A bright white organic light-emitting diode (OLED) has been successfully fabricated in which a greenish-white emitting host Bis-(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole)zinc (Zn(BTZ)₂) is doped with an orange-red fluorescent dye 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene (rubrene). The pure white light emission with CIE coordinates of (0.341, 0.334) is achieved at the driving voltage of 20 V, and the corresponding luminance and external quantum efficiency are 4000 Cd/m² and 0.63%. On the other hand, the pure red, green, and blue (RGB) emissions are obtained from the white OLED combined well with RGB custom-built optical color filters (CFs) with peaks at 616, 556, and 456 nm, respectively. Moreover, based upon the color mixture principles, we build a model of multi-color display mixed by the pure RGB emissions under the controllable bias.

This paper is concerned with the existence of positive solutions for the boundary value problem of one-dimensional p-Laplacian with delay. The proof is based on the Guo–Krasnoselskii fixed-point theorem in cones.     

Determination of nickel with 2-(2-quinolylazo)-5-diethylaminoaniline as a chromogenic reagent.

A sensitive, selective and rapid method for the determination of nickel based on a rapid reaction of nickel(II) with 2-(2-quinolylazo)-5-diethylaminoaniline (QADEAA) has been developed. In the presence of pH = 6.0 ammonia-ammonium chloride buffer solution and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) medium, QADEAA reacts with nickel to form a violet complex having a molar ratio of 1:2 (nickel to QADEAA). The molar absorptivity of the complex is 1.38 x 10(5) l mol(-1) cm(-1) at 595 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0.01-0.4 microg/ml. This method had been applied to the determination of nickel with good results.
