Preparation dependent superconductivity in TlCaBa2Cu3O7.5±d above 100 K

Different heat treatment procedures were applied during sample preparation, which resulted in different superconducting properties in samples of the same nominal composition, TlCaBa₂Cu₃O_7.5±d . This manifests itself in different critical temperatures: 104 K, 107 K and 93 K. The highestT _c belongs to the best-crystallized samples in which the tetragonal Tl₂Ca₁Ba₂Cu₂O_8±d phase is responsible for the superconductivity. The effect of heat treatments is reflected in the structural and magnetic properties as well.     

Prevalent Behavior of Strongly Order Preserving Semiflows

Classical results in the theory of monotone semiflows give sufficient conditions for the generic solution to converge toward an equilibrium or toward the set of equilibria (quasiconvergence). In this paper, we provide new formulations of these results in terms of the measure-theoretic notion of prevalence, developed in Christensen (Israel J. Math., 13, 255–260, 1972) and Hunt et al. (Bull. Am. Math. Soc., 27, 217–238, 1992). For monotone reaction–diffusion systems with Neumann boundary conditions on convex domains, we show the prevalence of the set of continuous initial conditions corresponding to solutions that converge to a spatially homogeneous equilibrium. We also extend a previous generic convergence result to allow its use on Sobolev spaces. Careful attention is given to the measurability of the various sets involved.     

Segmented gas–liquid flow characterization in rectangular microchannels

We used optical methods such as Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (LSM) to characterize gas–liquid phase distribution in rectangular microchannels. Using a 2 m long microchannel with a hydraulic diameter of 200 μm enables the precise measurement of important parameters such as liquid slug length, bubble length, pressure drop and film thickness at the wall as well as in the corner of the microchannel for low Capillary numbers (Ca) ranging from 2 × 10⁻⁴ to 1 × 10⁻². This range of Ca was obtained by using different fluid pairs such as ethanol, water and different concentrated aqueous solutions of glycerol in combination with nitrogen.
