Phenyliodine(III) Diacetate/I2-Mediated Domino Approach for Pyrrolo[1,4]Thiazines and 1,4-Thiazines by a One-Pot Morin Rearrangement of N,S-Acetals

An efficient domino transformation using a phenyliodine(III) diacetate (PIDA)/I₂ combination towards Morin 1,4-thiazine compounds has been developed starting from N,S-acetals. The latter leads to “one-step” regioselective methylene insertion without the need for traditional sulfoxide intermediates in good yields. The reaction involves easily accessible N,S-acetals obtained from cost-effective basic ketones and cysteamine as starting materials. This process ultimately leads to 1,4-thiazines related to natural product and fused derivatives necessary for further QSAR study.

Levels of natural and artifical radioactivity in sediments in the Eastern Black Sea of Turkey

Sediment samples collected from the Eastern Black Sea in 1993 from 15 sampling stations of different depths have been analyzed. Natural and artifical radionuclide activity levels in offshore sediment samples from the Eastern Black Sea in Turkey are reported about seven years after the Chernobyl accident. The purpose of this paper is to follow up the earlier study and present results for the distributions of radionuclides in sediments of the Black Sea.     

Theoretical Design of Strong Neutral Radical–Boron Adducts: Trisubstituted Boranes as Potential Radical Scavengers

The conditions of formation of strong two‐center one‐electron bonds in neutral compounds are discussed. Both molecular orbital and valence bond analyses show that good candidates are adducts of radicals ^.AR₃ (A=C, Si, Ge) of low ionization energy (IE) with boranes BX₃ of high electron affinity (EA). This is confirmed by ab initio calculations. The bond energy of adducts of B(CF₃)₃ with various radicals ranges from 18 kcal mol^?1 for ^.CH₃ to approximately 40 kcal mol^?1 for Me₃Si^., and a clear correlation with IE–EA difference is found. This allows one to expect B(CF₃)₃, among other fluoroboranes, to be an efficient radical scavenger.     

Hexaphenylbenzene as a rigid template for the straightforward syntheses of "star-shaped" glycodendrimers

Original glycodendrimers emanating from propargylated hexaphenylbenzene cores and containing up to 54 peripheral sugar ligands have been synthesized by Cu(I)-catalyzed [1,3]-dipolar cycloadditions using both convergent and divergent approaches.     

The excited state dipole moments of betaine pyridinium investigated by an innovative solvatochromic analysis and TDDFT calculations

This work reports on the solvatochromic properties of a simple heterocyclic betaine pyridinium, 2-(1-pyridinio)benzimidazolate (SBPa), having promising potentialities in non-linear optics. From advanced PCM-TDDFT calculations, the solvatochromism of SBPa was found to be unusual, involving two different electronic states for absorption (S(0)→ S(2)) and emission (S(1)→S'(0)). To account for this behavior, we developed an innovative physical treatment which consists in a non-linear fit of the solvatochromic data using the Bilot-Kawski theoretical model and visualizing the least-square coefficient χ(2) on a 2D map as a function of the solute polarizability and gas phase absorption energy. In parallel, Kamlet-Taft correlations were undertaken to select a propitious set of electrostatic solvents usable in this treatment. Protic solvents that lead to specific interactions and nonpolar solvents that favor dimerization processes were excluded. From a choice of aprotic solvents with sufficiently high polarity, 4 dipole moments μ(g)(S(0)) = +9.1 D, μ(e)(S(2)) = -1.5 D, μ(e)(S(1)) = 0 D and μ(g)(S'(0)) = +3.31 D were determined, the 3 former values being in close agreement with TDDFT values, although the solute polarizability values seem underestimated. Anyhow, disregarding this discrepancy, we evaluated the static hyperpolarizability to β(0) = -64 × 10(-30) esu from the solvatochromic data in close agreement with DFT calculations.     

Access to antigens related to anthrose using pivotal cyclic sulfite/sulfate intermediates

Anthrose is the upstream terminal unit of the tetrasaccharide side chain from a major glycoprotein of Bacillus anthracis exosporium and is part of important antigenic determinants. A novel entry to anthrose-containing antigens and precursors is described. The synthetic route, starting from D(+)-fucose, makes use of intermediates featuring a cyclic sulfite or sulfate function which serves successively as a protecting and a leaving group.     

Diagramme polythermique du systeme ternaire H2O—Al(NO3)3—Mg(NO3)2

The solid—liquid equilibria of the ternary system H₂O—Al(NO₃)₃—Mg(NO₃)₂ were studied at –30, –20, –10 and 0°C by using a synthetic method which allows to detemine all the characteristic points of isothermal sections. The stable solid phases which appear are respectively: ice, Al(NO₃)₃·9H₂O, Mg(NO₃)₂·9H₂O and Mg(NO₃)₂·6H₂O. Neither double salts nor mixed crystals are observed in the temperature and composition field studied. Polytherm diagram layout show two invariant transformations correspond with an eutectic point and a peritectic point.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.
