Antioxidative and anticarcinogenic activities of methylpheophorbide a,isolated from wheat grass (Triticum aestivum Linn.)

Methylphophorbide a (MPa) has been isolated from the ethanol extract of the wheat grass plant. Its antioxidative efficacy is evaluated by hydroxyl radical scavenging activities and reducing capacity which are significantly up regulated in comparison with aqueous extract of the plant. The compound shows iron-binding capacity where the Fe²⁺ binds with MPa by two types of binding patterns with dissociation constants 157.17 and 27.89. It has antioxidative and cytotoxic effects on HeLa and Hep G2 cells. The cancerous cell survivability decreases with increasing concentration of MPa. These findings have provided evidence for the traditional use of the wheat grass plant in the treatment of cancers, oxidative stress and iron overloaded disorders.

Study of the Release Mechanism of Terminalia chebula Extract from Nanoporous Silica Gel

Sol/gel-derived silica gel was prepared at room temperature from tetraethyl orthosilicate precursor. The extracts of Terminalia chebula (Haritoki) were entrapped into the porous silica gel. Fourier transform infrared analysis revealed the proper adsorption of herbal values in the nanopores of the silica gel. Porosity was estimated by transmission electron microscope studies. The release kinetics of the extract in both 0.1 N HCl, pH 1.2, and Phosphate-buffer saline (PBS), pH 7.2, were determined using UV–Vis spectroscopy. Different dissolution models were applied to release data in order to evaluate the release mechanisms and kinetics. Biphasic release patterns were found in every formulation for both the buffer systems. The kinetics followed a zero-order equation for first 4 h and a Higuchi expression in a subsequent timeline in the case of 0.1 N HCl. In the case of PBS, the formulations showed best linearity with a first-order equation followed by Higuchi’s model. The sustained release of the extract predominantly followed diffusion and super case II transport mechanism. The release value was always above the minimum inhibitory concentration.     

Catalytic hydrolysis of phosphodiesters by nucleophilic ions in gemini micellar media

The catalytic hydrolysis of bis(4‐nitrophenyl)phosphate (BNPP) and bis(2,4‐dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP) catalyzed by α‐nucleophiles in gemini micellar media was investigated at 27 °C. The cationic gemini surfactants, i.e., alkanediyl‐α‐ω‐bis(hydroxyethylmethylhexadecylammonium bromide) (16‐s‐16 MEA 2Br^?, where s = 4 and 6) were used. Nucleophilic reactivity of α‐nucleophiles such as hydroperoxide (HOO^?), acetohydroxamate (AHA^?), and butane 2,3‐dione monoximate ions (BDMO^?) were compared. The kinetic rate data were treated by applying the pseudophase model. The cationic gemini surfactants show unusual rate acceleration toward the cleavage of phosphodiesters with nucleophiles. These studies reveal that the hydroperoxide ion shows the highest catalytic activity reported so far with an unprecedented acceleration rate, 10⁷ times faster than that of the uncatalyzed reaction. The possible mechanism for the BNPP and BDNPP cleavage promoted by α‐nucleophiles is proposed on the basis of kinetic analysis. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Synthesis of 2-C-methylerythritols and 2-C-methylthreitols via enantiodivergent Sharpless dihydroxylation of trisubstituted olefins

The mevalonate-independent pathway (MIP) is an interesting avenue for antimicrobial lead discovery. Here, we present a unified enantioselective synthesis of all four stereoisomers of 2-C-methyltetrol. These are useful building blocks of many bioactive natural products, including 2-C-methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) of the MIP biosynthetic pathway.     

Fluctuation study of pionisation in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus interaction

The scaled factorial moments and the multifractal moments have been investigated in different??-intervals to study the dynamical fluctuation of pions produced in 200 AGeV³²S-Ag/Br interaction. In order to investigate the detail characteristics of intermittency behaviour, theF-moments are extracted up to the eighth order of moments in differentM-intervals. The analysis indicates a non-thermal phase transition and different regime of particle production during the hadronisation process.
