Simulation of a 2-site Langmuir model for characterizing the sorption capacity of Cs and Se in crushed mudrock under various ionic strength effects

The sorption capacity of cesium (Cs) and selenium (Se) in crushed mudrock was demonstrated in this study through a 2-site Langmuir model. To employ such a numerical analysis, batch tests were applied in this study in synthetic seawater and groundwater with sorption/desorption kinetic experiments (time-dependent) and different concentrations (10^?2–10^?7 M). The 2-site sorption models, which correspond to two rate constants (λ ₁ and λ ₂), might be more adequate than 1-site sorption models in characterizing Cs and Se sorption/desorption according to the least square errors between the numerical analysis and the results of the batch tests. The fitting results showed that a 2-site Langmuir model is capable of appropriately describing Cs and Se sorption in mudrock. Consequently, the sorption capacity was calculated at about 0.06 mol/kg for Cs and at 0.015 mol/kg for Se.     

Enhanced lithium electrochromism of atmospheric pressure plasma jet-synthesized tungsten/molybdenum oxide films for flexible electrochromic devices

Enhanced lithium electrochromic performances of mixed organo-tungsten oxide (W _x O _y C _z )/organo-molybdenum oxide (Mo _x O _y C _z ) films by a rapid codeposition onto 40 Ω/□ flexible polyethylene terephthalate/indium tin oxide substrates at a short exposed duration of 23 s using an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) at various mixed concentrations of hexacarbonyl precursors [W(CO)₆ and Mo(CO)₆] are investigated. The flexible organo-tungsten–molybdenum oxide (WMo _x O _y C _z ) films demonstrated noteworthy electrochromic performance for 200 cycles of reversible Li⁺ ion intercalation and deintercalation in a 1 M LiClO₄–propylene carbonate electrolyte by the switching measurements of potential sweep from ?1 to 1 V at a scan rate of 50 mV/s and the potential step at ?1 and 1 V, even after being bent 360^o around a 2.5-cm diameter rod for 1,000 cycles. The optical modulation (ΔT) of 61.3 % for MoO _y C _z films at a wavelength of 795.6 nm was significantly improved up to 72.5 % for WMo _x O _y C _z films cosynthesized with an APPJ.     

Thin Film Deposition of Semiconducting Ni-Co Oxide Spinel with Adequate Electrical and Optical Properties for Energy Application

Nickel-cobalt oxide with spinel structure was successfully fabricated using a wet chemical route followed by calcinations at 300 °C. In nickel-cobalt spinel oxide, Ni²⁺ ions occupy the octahedral sites and Co³⁺ ions are distributed over both octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Very interestingly, nickel-cobalt spinel oxide does not only show a p-type semi-conducting behavior material but also exhibits desired transparency in infrared wavelengths. Electrical and optical properties of the deposited films were investigated as a function of different processing conditions. The sputtering target is fabricated by homogeneously mixing oxide powders and followed by sintering at 1,500 °C. The nickel-cobalt oxide film showed a resistivity as low as 10^?2 Ω-cm by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering in a pure oxygen atmosphere. The sputter-deposited nickel-cobalt oxide films also showed more than 70% transmittance in the infrared range.     

Avobenzone encapsulated in modified dextrin for improved UV protection and reduced skin penetration

The present study used differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and UV spectrometry to examine: i) the encapsulation of an organic UV filter 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(4- tert-butylphenyl)propane-1,3-dione (avobenzone) within modified dextrin and ii) the characteristics of these inclusion complexes (MDA). The properties of avobenzone emulsions with and without encapsulation in modified dextrin, the in vitro UV protection factor, dissolution and release, and the skin penetrability of avobenzone were also examined. The presence of inclusion complexes significantly decreased the tendency of the UV filter to penetrate the skin. In addition, such inclusion complexes should effectively prevent skin damage from radiation extending from the UVA to the UVC.

Exact solutions of functionally graded piezoelectric material sandwich cylinders by a modified Pagano method

The three-dimensional (3D) coupled analysis of simply-supported, functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) circular hollow sandwich cylinders under electro-mechanical loads is presented. The material properties of each FGPM layer are regarded as heterogeneous through the thickness coordinate, and obey an exponent-law dependent on this. The Pagano method is modified to be feasible for the study of FGPM sandwich cylinders. The modifications are as follows: a displacement-based formulation is replaced by a mixed formulation; a set of the complex-valued solutions of the system equations is transferred to the corresponding set of real-valued solutions; a successive approximation method is adopted to approximately transform each FGPM layer into a multilayered piezoelectric one with an equal and small thickness for each layer in comparison with the mid-surface radius, and with the homogeneous material properties determined in an average thickness sense; and a transfer matrix method is developed, so that the general solutions of the system equations can be obtained layer-by-layer, which is significantly less time-consuming than the usual approach. A parametric study is undertaken of the influence of the aspect ratio, open- and closed-circuit surface conditions, and material-property gradient index on the assorted field variables induced in the FGPM sandwich cylinders.
