All electron calculations of open-shell polyatomic molecules. III. Perturbation treatment of the spin polarization in vinyl and methyl radicals

A first order perturbation treatment starting with SCF-MO 'S in canonical or equivalent quasi-localized form is presented for the hyperfine coupling constants of vinyl and methyl radicals. The spin-polarisation contribution to hyperfine splittings is found to be large, negative for the proton of the radical center in both radicals and positive for the β protons of vinyl.     

Quinazolines and 1,4-benzodiazepines. XLVI. Photochemistry of nitrones and oxaziridines

The cyclic nitrones 7-chloro-1,3-dihydro-5-phenyl-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one 4-oxide ( 5a ) and 1,3-dihydro-7-methylthio-5-phenyl-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one 4-oxide ( 5b ) are photoisomerized to readily isolable oxaziridines, 7-chloro-4,5-epoxy-5-phenyl-1,3,4–5-tetrahydro-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one ( 6a ) and 4,5-epoxy-5-phenyl-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-7-methylthio-2H-1,4-benzo-diazepin-2-one ( 6b ). Oxaziridine 6b upon further irradiation gave ring expansion and ring contraction products, 4,6-dihydro-2-phenyl-9-methylthio-5H-1,3,6-benzoxadiazocin-5-one ( 7b ) and 4-benzoyl-3,4-dihydro-6-methylthioquinoxalin-2(1H)-one ( 8b ) respectively. The ring contraction product, 4-benzoyl-6-chloro-3,4-dihydroquinoxalin-2(1H)-one ( 8a ), was obtained from irradiation of oxaziridine 6a .     

Synthèse de flavones et de xanthones dans la série du benzo[4,5]thiophène

We describe the first synthesis of 2-arylbenzo[4,5]thieno-[2,3-b]pyran-4-one and of 2-arylbenzo [4,5] thieno [3,2-b] pyran-4-one, from benzo [4,5] thiophene and we have extended these cyclizations to obtain the heterocyclic analogs of the xanthones.     

Teaching Operational Research Technique

Good technique, i.e. competence in carrying out operational research, is as vital for the practitioner to acquire as competence in the traditional ‘techniques’. It is suggested that universities should teach students how to conduct simple projects prior to alerting them to more sophisticated methodological issues.As an aid to this task, the traditional five or six parts of an operational research project are broken down and extended into 39 steps, and regrouped into three phases. Also, five skills are identified as being conceptually essential to "good" operational research, which students can develop through tackling suitable case studies.     

High accuracy analysis by isotope dilution mass spectrometry using an iterative exact matching technique

The selection of an appropriate isotope dilution mass spectrometry technique for the practical application of this potentially primary method of analysis is highly important. The NARL approach for the application of the exact matching double isotope dilution mass spectrometry technique developed by Henrion is presented. NARL's approach utilises exact matching to minimise the effect of measurement biases within the method but also includes the thorough examination of all other biasing factors. The approach has been successfully tested in international CCQM intercomparisons with other national metrology institutes.     

2,4,6‐Trimethylphenyl isocyanide

The title compound, C₁₀H₁₁N, displays a crystallographic mirror plane that incorporates all the non‐H atoms, as well as the H atoms attached to the aromatic ring. The iso­cyano group is almost linear and shows an N[triple‐bond]C bond distance of 1.158 (3) Å.     

Structure and Thermodynamics of NaF-AlF(3) Melts with Addition of CaF(2) and MgF(2)

The NaF-AlF(3) system with additions of CaF(2) and MgF(2) has been studied with Raman and vapor pressure measurements for 3 >/= CR (NaF/AlF(3) molar ratio) >/= 1 and up to 50 mol % additive. The results show that the binary melt can be described using the two equilibria AlF(6)(3)(-) = AlF(6)(2)(-) + F(-) and AlF(5)(2)(-) = AlF(4)(-) + F(-) with equilibrium constants 0.25 and 0.05, respectively, at 1293 K. Both reactions have positive reaction enthalpies. The first equilibrium is strongly shifted to the right resulting in a melt mixture with very low AlF(6)(3)(-) concentrations even at the Na(3)AlF(6) composition. Evidence for nonideal mixing of anions was found. For the ternaries, models based on Raman data are presented and compared with vapor pressure measurements. Good agreement is observed when association between the additives, CaF(2) or MgF(2), with the AlF(5)(2)(-) ions in the melt was considered. This association could be experimentally observed through a band broadening and a slight shift in the AlF(5)(2)(-) band frequency. Our vapor pressures and Raman data both indicate that MgF(2) clearly acts as an acid when added to NaF-AlF(3) melts of any composition. When CaF(2) is added, a slight decrease of vapor pressure occurs. Raman data indicate a decrease of AlF(4)(-) concentration, corresponding to a dissociation of CaF(2) with liberation of F(-) ions. All these results are, however, very much dependent on the initial melt composition. These data are explained in terms of acid-base, dilution, and association reactions of the solute with the solvent.     

The syntheses of pyridazino[1,2-a] pyridazine derivatives of furan,pyridazine and pyrrole by diels-alder reactions

Diels-Alder adducts were formed in the lead tetraacetate oxidations of substituted cyclic hydrazides of furan, pyridazine and pyrrole dicarboxylic acids in the presence of 1,3-cyclo-hexadiene or 1,3-cyclopentadiene. The products resulting were furo[3,4-g]pyridazino[1,2-a]-pyridazine-6,10-diones, pyridazino[4,5-g]pyridazino[1,2-a]pyridazine-6,11-diones, and pyrrolo-[3,4-g]pyridazino[1,2-a]pyridazine-6,10-diones, respectively. Some hydrogenations and ring opening reactions were studied.
