A topological characterization of the Sierpiński triangle

We present a topological characterization of the Sierpiński triangle. This answers question 58 from the Problem book of the Open Problem Seminar held at Charles University. In fact we give a characterization of the Apollonian gasket first. Consequently we show that any subcontinuum of the Apollonian gasket, whose boundary consists of three points, is homeomorphic to the Sierpiński triangle.     

Temporarily Expanding the Boundaries of the Self: Motivations for Entering the Story World and Implications for Narrative Effects

A wide variety of motivations for engaging with narratives have been proposed and studied. We propose that underlying these motivations is another, more fundamental motivation. Our premise is that maintenance, defense, and regulation of the personal and social self in daily life are demanding both emotionally and cognitively. Moreover, any individual self is constrained by capability, situation, and social role. Stories and identification with story characters provide a means individuals may use for temporary relief from the task of self‐regulation and from the limitations of individual personal and social identities. Existing supportive research is acknowledged and implications explored, concerning contexts in which story involvement will be particularly attractive and possible impacts on attitudes and acceptance of out‐groups including stigmatized others.     

On the use of ‘shortcuts’ in the method of continuous variation (Job's method)

The use of modified Job plot methodology provides a quick and easy means for evaluating host–guest stoichiometry and requires less material than the original method. In this short paper, the results of a recent anion recognition study using thiourea-functionalised norbornanes and [n]polynorbornanes are presented. A significant difference between the plots constructed using the original and modified method was observed and, as such, caution is advised when the modified Job's method is solely used for the determination of host–guest stoichiometry.

Three-dimensional manganese dioxide-functionalized carbon nanotube electrodes for electrochemical supercapacitors

Three-dimensional manganese dioxide (MnO₂)-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) electrodes have been produced by a simple and scalable thermal decomposition process. The electrodes are prepared by treating planar MWCNT sheets with manganese(II) nitrate (Mn(NO₃)₂) solution and annealing at low temperature (200–300 °C) and ambient pressure. The morphology, chemical composition, and structure of the resulting matrices have been investigated with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Supercapacitors assembled with three-dimensional electrodes exhibit a 14-fold increase in specific capacitance (C _sp) in comparison to those containing pristine, two-dimensional MWCNT electrodes. C _sp varies linearly with Mn(NO₃)₂ thermal decomposition temperature (from 100 to 61 F/g at 0.2 A/g), a trend that is discussed in the context of nitrate reaction chemistry and MWCNT structure. This efficient and promising approach allows for simultaneous enhancement of electrode–electrolyte contact area and incorporation of redox-based charge storage within electrochemical capacitors.     

Ice‐Templated Scaffolds with Microridged Pores Direct DRG Neurite Growth

Successful spinal cord repair is thought to be promoted with hierarchically structured scaffolds. These should combine aligned porosity with additional linear features on the micrometer scale to guide axons across multiple length scales. Such scaffolds are generated through the carefully controlled directional solidification of an aqueous biopolymer solution, followed by lyophilization. Under specific freezing conditions this yields a highly regular and aligned lamellar architecture. This architecture exhibits uniform ridges of controlled height and width on the lamellar surface. These ridges run parallel to the pore axis, serving as secondary guidance features. The ridges are capable of linearly aligning 62.4% of chick dorsal root ganglia neurites to within ±10° of the ridge direction. Notably, neurites sprouting perpendicular to the ridge are guided into alignment with these microridged features.
