The slow aggregation process of a concentrated silica dispersion (Bindzil 40/220) in the presence of alkali chlorides (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, RbCl, and CsCl) was investigated by means of mobility measurements. At intervals during the aggregation, particles and aggregates were transferred from the liquid phase to the gas phase via electrospray (ES) and subsequently size selected and counted using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). This method enables the acquisition of particle and aggregate size distributions with a time resolution of minutes. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the method has been applied to study the process of colloidal aggregation. The obtained results indicate that, independent of the type of counterion, a sufficient dilution of the formed gel will cause the particles to redisperse. Hence, the silica particles are, at least initially, reversibly aggregated. The reversibility of the aggregation indicates additional non-DLVO repulsive steric interactions that are likely due to the presence of a gel layer at the surface. The size of the disintegrating aggregates was monitored as a function of the time after dilution. It was found that the most stable aggregates were formed by the ions that adsorb most strongly on the particle surface. This attractive effect was ascribed to an ion-ion correlation interaction.  相似文献

Molecular simulations are used to shed light on an ongoing controversy over where gases adsorb on single walled carbon nanotube bundles. We have performed simulations using models of carbon nanotube bundles composed of tubes of all the same diameter (homogeneous) and tubes of different diameters (heterogeneous). Simulation data are compared with experimental data in an effort to identify the best model for describing experimental data. Adsorption isotherms, isosteric heats of adsorption, and specific surface areas have been computed for Ar, CH 4, and Xe on closed, open, and partially opened homogeneous and heterogeneous nanotube bundles. Experimental data from nanotubes prepared from two different methods, electric arc and HiPco, were examined. Experimental adsorption isotherms and isosteric heats for nanotubes prepared by the electric arc method are in best agreement with simulations for heterogeneous bundles of closed nanotubes. Models including adsorption in defect interstitial channels are required to achieve good agreement with experiments. Experimental isosteric heats and specific surface areas on HiPco nanotubes are best described by a model consisting of heterogeneous bundles with approximately 11% of the nanotubes opened.  相似文献

Of the most common cubic intermetallic structure types, several (MgCu(2), Cu(5)Zn(8), Ti(2)Ni, and alpha-Mn) have superstructures with unusual symmetry properties. These superstructures (Be(5)Au, Li(21)Si(5), Sm(11)Cd(45), and Mg(44)Ir(7)) have the unusual property of pairs of perpendicular pseudo fivefold axes, most apparent in their X-ray diffraction patterns. The current work shows that an 8D to 3D projection method cleanly describes most (and in one case, all) of the atomic positions in the four superstructures mentioned above. This type of projection, which maps the E(8) lattice (a mathematically simple 8D crystal) into 3D space, combines the desired higher dimensional point group's perpendicular fivefold rotations with 3D translational symmetry-exactly what we see in the experimental crystal structures. The projection method successfully accounts for all heavy atom positions in the four superstructures, and at least 60-70 % of the light atom positions. The results suggest that all of these structures, previously known to be connected only by qualitative similarities in their atomic "clusters", are approximants of a single, as-yet unknown, class of quasicrystal.  相似文献

The alignment of membrane proteins provides pertinent structural and dynamic information. Structural topology data gleaned from such studies can be used to determine the functional mechanisms associated with a wide variety of integral membrane proteins. In this communication, we successfully demonstrate, for the first time, the determination of the structural topology and helical tilt of an antimicrobial peptide magainin 2 using aligned X-band spin-label EPR spectroscopic techniques. This novel comparison unlocks many possibilities utilizing EPR spectroscopy to probe antimicrobial peptide topologies with increased sensitivity and may also give further clues to elucidate their corresponding mechanisms.  相似文献

The oncoprotein MDM2 regulates the activity and stability of the tumor suppressor p53 through protein-protein interaction involving their N-terminal domains. The N-terminal lid of MDM2 has been implicated in p53 regulation; however, due to its flexible nature, limited data are available concerning its role in ligand binding. The quantitative dynamics study using NMR reported here shows, for the first time, that the lid in apo-MDM2 slowly interconverts between a "closed" state that is associated with the p53-binding cleft and an "open" state that is highly flexible. Our results reveal that apo-MDM2 predominantly populates the closed state, whereas the p53-bound MDM2 exclusively populates the open state. Unlike p53 binding, the small molecule MDM2 antagonist nutlin-3 binds to the cleft essentially without perturbing the closed lid state. The lid dynamics thereby represents a signature for the experimental and virtual screening of therapeutic antagonists that target the p53-MDM2 interaction.  相似文献

Exceptionally long C60 nanowires, with a length to width aspect ratio as large as 3000, are grown from a 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene solution of C60. They have been formed to possess a highly unusual morphology, with each nanowire being composed of two nanobelts joined along the growth direction to give a V-shaped cross section. The crystal structure of these nanowires is found to be orthorhombic, with the unit cell dimensions of a = 10.2 A, b = 20.5 A, and c = 25.6 A. Structural and compositional analyses enable us to explain the observed geometry with an anisotropic molecular packing mechanism that has not been observed previously in C60 crystal studies. The nanowires have been observed to be able to transform into carbon nanofibers following high-temperature treatment, but the original V-shaped morphology can be kept unchanged in the transition. A model for the nanowire morphology based upon the solvent-C60 interactions and preferential growth directions is proposed, and potentially it could be extended for use to grow different types of fullerene nanowires.  相似文献

There is a need for a method to facilitate the development of novel, reproducible colloidal surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates to encourage the use of SERS in applied studies. In this study we show for the first time that by using suitably designed SERS experiments in conjunction with multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), an objective assessment of colloidal SERS reproducibility can be made. This is demonstrated with the analyte cresyl violet, but could be extended to any analyte of interest for which reproducible SERS data are needed.  相似文献

Relaxation of highly vibrationally excited pyrimidine (C(4)N(2)H(4)) by collisions with carbon dioxide has been investigated using diode laser transient absorption spectroscopy. Vibrationally hot pyrimidine (E(')=40 635 cm(-1)) was prepared by 248-nm excimer laser excitation, followed by rapid radiationless relaxation to the ground electronic state. The nascent rotational population distribution (J=58-80) of the 00(0)0 ground state of CO(2) resulting from collisions with hot pyrimidine was probed at short times following the excimer laser pulse. Doppler spectroscopy was used to measure the CO(2) recoil velocity distribution for J=58-80 of the 00(0)0 state. Rate constants and probabilities for collisions populating these CO(2) rotational states were determined. The measured energy transfer probabilities, indexed by final bath state, were resorted as a function of DeltaE to create the energy transfer distribution function, P(E,E(')), from E(')-E approximately 1300-7000 cm(-1). P(E,E(')) is fitted to a single exponential and a biexponential function to determine the average energy transferred in a single collision between pyrimidine and CO(2) and parameters that can be compared to previously studied systems using this technique, pyrazineCO(2), C(6)F(6)CO(2), and methylpyrazineCO(2). P(E,E(')) parameters for these four systems are also compared to various molecular properties of the donor molecules. Finally, P(E,E(')) is analyzed in the context of two models, one which suggests that the shape of P(E,E(')) is primarily determined by the low-frequency out-of-plane donor vibrational modes and one which suggests that the shape of P(E,E(')) can be determined by how the donor molecule final density of states changes with DeltaE.  相似文献

Polyethylene (PE) is the most widely produced synthetic polymer. By installing chemically cleavable bonds into the backbone of PE, it is possible to produce chemically deconstructable PE derivatives; to date, however, such designs have primarily relied on carbonyl- and olefin-related functional groups. Bifunctional silyl ethers (BSEs; SiR2(OR′2)) could expand the functional scope of PE mimics as they possess strong Si−O bonds and facile chemical tunability. Here, we report BSE-containing high-density polyethylene (HDPE)-like materials synthesized through a one-pot catalytic ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and hydrogenation sequence. The crystallinity of these materials can be adjusted by varying the BSE concentration or the steric bulk of the Si-substituents, providing handles to control thermomechanical properties. Two methods for chemical recycling of HDPE mimics are introduced, including a circular approach that leverages acid-catalyzed Si−O bond exchange with 1-propanol. Additionally, despite the fact that the starting HDPE mimics were synthesized by chain-growth polymerization (ROMP), we show that it is possible to recover the molar mass and dispersity of recycled HDPE products using step-growth Si−O bond formation or exchange, generating high molecular weight recycled HDPE products with mechanical properties similar to commercial HDPE.  相似文献
