A 2.4-GHz Low-Power Low-IF Receiver and Direct-Conversion Transmitter in 0.18-μm CMOS for IEEE 802.15.4 WPAN Applications

In this paper, a low-power low-IF receiver and a direct-conversion transmitter (DCT) suitable for the IEEE standard 802.15.4 radio system at the 2.4-GHz band are presented in 0.18-mum deep n-well CMOS technology. By using vertical NPN (V-NPN) bipolar junction transistors in the baseband analog circuits of the low-IF receiver, the image rejection performance is improved and the power consumption is reduced. In addition, by applying the V-NPN current mirrored technique in a DCT, the carrier leakage is reduced and the linearity performance is improved. The receiver has 10 dB of noise figure, -15 dBm of third-order input intercept point, and 35 dBc of image rejection. The transmitter has more than -2 dBm of transmit output power, -35 dBc of local oscillator leakage, and -46 dBc of the transmit third harmonic component. The receiver and transmitter dissipate 6 and 9 mA from a 1.8-V supply, respectively     

A 20 GHz Steerable Array Antenna Using 3-bit Dielectric Slab Phase Shifters on a Coplanar Waveguide

A simple steerable array antenna is designed and developed using a movable dielectric phase shifter. The change of effective dielectric constant at different dielectric slab positions on a coplanar waveguide is used as the phase shifter. The impedance matching and desired phase shift conditions are satisfied at two slab heights, and the reflection is designed to be minimized at these slab positions. The low-loss dielectric material is used as the dielectric slab and is placed close to a coplanar transmission line with airgap. The 4times4 steerable array antenna with the phase shifters is designed and fabricated at 20 GHz. The H-plane radiation patterns are measured at different phase shift positions and compared with the expected results     

Synthesis and photochemical properties of novel pentamethylated norbornadiene containing polyimides

A novel pentamethylated norbornadiene (NBD) based dianhydride, α,α′‐bis‐(3,4,5,6,7‐pentamethylcyclopenta‐2,4‐dienyl)meta‐xylene‐1,2‐dianhydride (3), was prepared from α,α′‐bis‐(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)meta‐xylene (1) and acetylene dicarboxylic acid. The bis‐adduct formed via Diels–Alder reaction afforded tetra‐acid (2), which was chemically cyclodehydrated to lead the targeted dianhydride (3). New polyimides containing NBD moieties in the main chain were prepared from the dianhydride monomer (3) and various aromatic diamines. The chemical structure of the polymers was confirmed by both ¹H and ¹³C NMR analysis. Their Molecular weights were also measured by SEC. All of these polyimides are soluble at room temperature in common organic solvents, such as chloroform, dichloromethane, THF, DMSO, DMF, and NMP, and show good thermal stabilities. The photochemical isomerization of the NBD into quadricyclane (QC) was investigated by UV/vis spectrophotometry from polymer films using visible sunlight as irradiation source. It was found that the kinetic rate of the conversion NBD‐QC which proceeded smoothly is a first kinetic order. The stored energies released by the transformation of QC groups into NBD ones of the irradiated polymer films were also evaluated by DSC measurement and were found to be around 90 kJ mol^?1. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biases in the prime number race of function fields

We derive a formula for the density of positive integers satisfying a certain system of inequality, often referred as prime number races, in the case of the polynomial rings over finite fields. This is a function field analog of the work of Feuerverger and Martin, who established such formula in the number field case, building up on the fundamental work of Rubinstein and Sarnak.     

Identification of137Cs in an individual microparticle by laser desorption/ionization ion trap mass spectrometer

The detection of radiocesium in microparticles was performed by using an ion trap mass spectrometer coupled with laser desorption and ionization. Pulsed laser desorbed particle and the resulted ions were analyzed by an ion trap mass analyzer. The presence of radiocesium, especially about¹³⁷Cs, in microparticles was verified by single as well as successive particle analysis. The detection limit was reached to ≈ag/particle level with a signal-to-background ratio of 4. The inhomogeneous distribution of particle size and the irregular shapes of particle limit the quantitative evaluation of¹³⁷Cs concentration in the microparticle. But this high sensitivity allows to monitor directly the radiocesium from small amounts of a microparticle sample.     

Thin layer gas electrode and its application to measurement of dissolved oxygen

A novel thin layer cell equipped with thin layer gas electrode (TLGE) was studied as electrochemical gas sensor for the measurement of dissolved oxygen in water or aqueous solutions. The working electrode (TLGE) is a hydrophobic gas diffusing electrode placed between the cell electrolyte and the solution to be tested. The hydrophobic pores in TLGE serve as a gas chamber. After the sampling period, in which the partial pressure of dissolved oxygen in test solution becomes in equilibrium with that in the gas chamber, the TLGE is polarized with square wave or linear potential signal. Then the Faradaic charge (Q) consumed in depletion of the oxygen contained in pores of TLGE is measured. The main merits of this system are good linearity between the partial pressure of dissolved oxygen in test solution and Q, low zero-reading, negligible liquid-gas difference, convenient calibration and very low temperature coefficient (ca. 0.5%/°C). This technique can also be applied to the measurement of oxygen partial pressure in gas phases.

Plasma etching optimization of oxide/nitride/oxide interpolydielectric breakdown time in flash memory devices

The breakdown time of flash memory oxide/nitride/oxide (ONO) layer t_bd under positive constant current stressing has been found to be closely related to the cumulative extent of (over)etch of the tungsten silicide, control polysilicon, and ONO layers, i.e., Σ(ΛOE). An empirical first-order relation between t_bd and Σ(ΛOE) has been derived to facilitate the plasma etch recipe optimization. This has led to a four-fold increase in the average t_bd across a 200-mm wafer to 208 s. More importantly, the spread in t_bd has been tightened to ~5%, which is down from ~54%     

Forced-convection film condensation on a horizontal cylinder with wavy surface structure

The forced-convection film condensation on a horizontal cylinder with wavy surface structure was performed by boundary-layer-approximation. The local/mean heat fluxes were obtained for the effects of tube temperature, wave number, and wave amplitude. The mean heat flux increases with decreasing wavy amplitude and tube temperatures. Furthermore, when β = 20 and α = 0.005, the mean heat flux slightly increases from 1.1 to 3.6% compared with that of smooth tube, depending on tube temperature.
