Some inequalities for partial orders

We establish some inequalities connecting natural parameters of a partial order P. For example, if every interval [a,b] contains at most maximal chains, if some antichain has cardinality v, and if there are ₁ chains whose union is cofinal and coinitial in P, then the chain decomposition number for P is ₁v (Theorem 2.2), and the inequality is sharp in a certain sense (Section 3).This paper was written while the authors were visitors at the Laboratoire d'algèbre ordinale, Département de Mathématiques, Université Claude Bernard, Lyon 1, France.Research supported by NSERC grant # A5198.     

An introduction to covariant superstring field theories

A pedagogical account is given of the recent developments in covariant (super)string field theories. After reviewing the construction of the free open bosonic string field theory, the super-symmetric case is treated and the space-time supersymmetry transformations are explained. Strong-coupling effects in high-T c superconductors

It is conceivable that the high-T _c superconducting perovskites are conventional electronphonon superconductors. In this case one expects significant strong-coupling effects because of the unusually high ratiok _B T _c / of the order 0.1 and greater. We use a set of reasonable models for the Eliashberg function ² F() (which takes into account available information on the phonon spectra and which fit the measuredT _c 's) and calculate strong-coupling effects in the specific heatc _s (T)/T _c , the ratio ₀/k _B T _c , the critical fieldsH _c (T) andH _c2 (T) including Pauli limiting, and other measurable quantities. Strongcoupling corrections turn out to be in the range of 0 to about 100%, depending on the quantity of interest. We discuss the perspectives of using strong-coupling effects as indicators for conventional electron-phonon superconductivity in the new materials.     

Baryons as rotating excitations of the chiral soliton

We show that the usual ansatz used for quantizing the collective coordinates corresponding to a rotation of chiral soliton does not satisfy the equations of motion. We suggest a more general ansatz that admits the separation of rotational degrees of freedom and does not contradict the equations of motion.Presented at the symposium Mesons and Light Nuclei, Bechyn, Czechoslovakia, May 27–June 1, 1985.     

Consistency of a linear system of inequalities

We show that a consistency check of a linear system of inequalitiesAxb reduces to check whetherQb0 for a certain matrixQ. It is a direct consequence of the Farkas-Minkowski theorem. Bianchi type-V perfect fluid models

A study of the nontilted diagonal Bianchi type-V perfect fluid models is undertaken in the nonlocally rotationally symmetric case. It is shown that in such a model, the singularity is necessarily velocity dominated and the upper bound for the ratio of the shear to the expansion is 1/3. A class of such exact models is also presented; the structure of the singularity and the effect of the anisotropy on the scale are discussed. Lastly, an attempt is made to solve exactly the equations of motion for the coordinates of the null geodesics.     

Rigorous justification of the Friedlander-Keller formulas

In the paper an asymptotic expansion (as , the wave number) is proved for the Green function of the problem of diffraction by a smooth convex body in two cases: when one of the points of the source or observer lies on the boundary while the other is an arbitrary distance from the boundary and also when both points lie off the boundary but not far from it.
