The effect of crystallinity on chain mobility and free volume in the amorphous regions of a miscible polycarbonate/polyester blend

Homopolymers and blends of polycarbonate/ThermX have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, density measurements, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The study focuses on the chain mobility and free volume in the amorphous miscible regions of the blends and how this mobility and free volume are affected by increasing crystallinity. It is proposed that judicious annealing, which results in increasing crystallinity (while avoiding ageing or transesterification), induces a constraint on the amorphous region leading to an increase in T_g and coalescence of free volume sites. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Thermal conductivity of poly(vinyl chloride)/polycaprolactone blends

Thermal diffusivity, heat capacity, and density of polyvinyl chloride/polycaprolactone (PVC/PCL) blends were measured by the laser flash method, DSC, and pycnometry, respectively. The thermal conductivity of the PVC/PCL blends was determined from the results. The miscibility of the blend and crystallinity of PCL were determined by DSC. The effect of blend structure on thermal conductivity is discussed. The phase compositions of the PVC/PCL blends are of three types depending on PCL content: i.e., up to 33%, from 33 to 70%, and above 70% PCL by weight. Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and heat capacity of the PVC/PCL blends are strongly affected by the phase composition of the blend, which changes in a complicated way with PCL content. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Towards understanding the increase in strength of thermotropic polyesters with heat treatment

Thermotropic copolyester fibers of oxynaphthoate and oxybenzoate have been subjected to conditions that promote solid-state polymerization as well as annealing. The annealing process causes the crystals to perfect with a simultaneous increase in heat of fusion and melting temperature. Solid-state polymerization, a reaction rate-controlled process, causes the polymer viscosity average molecular weight to increase by chain extension from about 14,000 g/mole to more than 87,000 g/mole with a simultaneous impressive increase in tenacity from about 10 g/d (1.2 GPa) to almost 30 g/d (3.7 GPa). To understand the changes in mechanical properties, we have modeled the fiber structure as short rod-like molecules poorly bonded to a continuous matrix of parallel molecules. Lengthening of the reinforcing molecules facilitates better transfer of load from matrix to molecules, resulting in higher tenacity fibers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Immunosuppressive activity of the blood serum of patients with cancer of the corpus uteri

In 40 patients with endometrial carcinoma of I-IV stage reaction of suppression of migration and adhesion of leukocytes (RSML and RSAL) in response to antigen prepared from the same tumour and in the presence of autoserum of blood of these patients, was studied. The index of antibody-forming cells (IAFC) and percentage of rosette-producing cells (RPC) in mice spleen after their infusion before immunization by sheep erythrocytes blood serum of the mentioned patients were also investigated. It was ascertained, that in all cases with using of autoserum of patients with endometrial carcinoma, especially on late stages, significant diminution of positive RSML and RSAL and decrease of IAFC and RPC take place. It was concluded that blood serum of patients with endometrial carcinoma gives evidence of immunosuppressive activity at late stages of the process.     

High-speed picosecond optical pulse compression from gain-switched 1.3-µm distributed feedback-laser diode (DFB-LD) through highly dispersive single-mode fiber

Picosecond optical pulse compression characteristics of chirped pulses from gain-switched distributed feedback-laser diodes (DFB-LD) transmitting through highly dispersive media are studied theoretically and experimentally. It is clarified theoretically that gain-switched chirped pulses can be compressed to about a 0.7-time bandwidth product by normal dispersion of the dispersive media and that the optimum dispersion value to obtain a minimum compressed pulse is proportional to the square of original pulsewidth. Through a dispersion, shifted single-mode fiber with -48-ps/nm normal dispersion at a 1.3-μm wavelength, gain-switched 30-ps (FWHM) pulses from a directly modulated 1.3-μm DFB-LD at a 4.4-GHz repetition rate have been successfully compressed to 6.4-ps optical pulses with a 0.86-time bandwidth product. Experimental results agree with the theoretical analysis.     

Spectrophotometric study of holmium complexation in KOH solutions at 25°C

The complexation of Ho³⁺ in HoCl₃ and KOH solutions at 25°C and saturated vapor pressure was studied by an indicator spectrophotometric technique, and the pH values of the investigated solutions were determined. The stability constants of the hydroxo complexes of Ho³⁺ were measured over a range of pH 9.25–10.10 and at μ≤ 4 × 10^?4 and extrapolated to zero ionic strength.
