Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis transitions of partially and fully substituted cellulose fatty esters

The main transitions of cellulose fatty esters with different degrees of substitution (DSs) were investigated with dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Two distinct main relaxations were observed in partially substituted cellulose esters (PSCEs). They were attributed to the glass‐transition temperature and to the chain local motion of the aliphatic substituents. The temperatures of both transitions decreased when DS or the number of carbon atoms (n) of the acyl substituent increased. Conversely, all the transitions of fully substituted cellulose esters occurred within a narrow temperature range, and they did not vary significantly with n. This phenomenon was explained by the formation of a crystalline phase of the fatty substituents. The presence of few residual OH groups in PSCEs was responsible for a large increase in the storage bending modulus, and it eliminated the effect of n on damping. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interaction of indigo carmine dye with silica modified with humic acids at solid/liquid interface

Two distinct humic acids, one extracted from Brazilian peat soil, HA_PS, and another one obtained from commercial source, HA_FL, were attachment onto silica gel modified with aminopropyltrimethoxysilane, producing two material named SiHA_PS and SiHA_FL, respectively. The ability of these materials in removing indigo carmine dye from aqueous solution was followed through series of adsorption isotherms adjusted to modified Langmuir equation. The maximum number of moles adsorbed gave 6.82 ± 0.12 × 10⁻⁴ and 2.15 ± 0.17 × 10⁻⁴ mol g⁻¹ for SiHA_PS and SiHA_FL, respectively. Same interactions were calorimetrically followed and the thermodynamic data showed endothermic enthalpic values: 12.31 ± 0.55 and 24.69 ± 1.05 kJ mol⁻¹ for SiHA_PS and SiHA_FL surfaces, respectively. Gibbs free energies for two adsorption processes of indigo carmine dye presented negative values, reflecting dye/surface interactions must be accompanied by an increased in entropy values, which are 65 ± 3 and 98 ± 5 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹ for SiHA_PS and SiHA_FL materials, respectively. The adsorption processes for both materials were spontaneous in nature although they presented an endothermic enthalpy for the interaction, resulting in an entropically favored process.     

Synthesis and applications of chiral bis-THF in asymmetric synthesis

The synthesis of enantiopure bis-THF is described, starting from d-mannitol. Bis-THF is used as chiral ligand for organolithium reagents in four different reactions. The enantioselectivity provided by this ligand is moderate, and the asymmetric induction is in line with the expected model.     

Brain-computer interface in multimedia communication

This article raises various issues in the design of an efficient BCI system in multimedia applications. The main focus is on one specific modality, namely an electroencephalography (EEG)-based BCI. In doing so, we provide an overview of the most recent progress achieved in this field, with an emphasis on signal processing aspects.     

An easy and fast way to determine the enantiomeric purity of substituted cyclanones

The determination of the enantiomeric purity of 2 or 3-substituted cyclanones, particularly cyclohexanones, is conveniently achieved by derivatisation into cyclic aminals with commercially available (R, R)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The derivatisation procedure is directly done into the NMR tube, instantaneously, and ¹³C NMR allows an accurate measure of the ee.     

Patterns in parabolic problems with nonlinear boundary conditions

We obtain existence of asymptotically stable nonconstant equilibrium solutions for semilinear parabolic equations with nonlinear boundary conditions on small domains connected by thin channels. We prove the convergence of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator in such domains. This information is used to show that the asymptotic dynamics of the heat equation in this domain is equivalent to the asymptotic dynamics of a system of two ordinary differential equations diffusively (weakly) coupled. The main tools employed are the invariant manifold theory and a uniform trace theorem.
