Rate constants for a wide range of binary aqueous mixtures and product selectivities (S) in ethanol–water (EW) and methanol–water (MW) mixtures, are reported at 25 °C for solvolyses of benzenesulfonyl chloride and the 4‐chloro‐derivative. S is defined as follows using molar concentrations: S = ([ester product]/[acid product]) × ([water solvent]/[alcohol solvent]). Additional selectivity data are reported for solvolyses of 4‐Z‐substituted sulfonyl chlorides (Z = OMe, Me, H, Cl and NO2) in 2,2,2‐trifluoroethanol–water. To explain these results and previously published data on kinetic solvent isotope effects (KSIEs) and on other solvolyses of 4‐nitro and 4‐methoxybenzenesulfonyl chloride, a mechanistic spectrum involving a change from third order to second order is proposed. The molecularity of these reactions is discussed, along with new term ‘SN3–SN2 spectrum’ and its connection with the better established term ‘SN2–SN1 spectrum’. The diffractive production of charmed strangeD s * and possiblyD s mesons by neutrinos and antineutrinos on nucleons in hydrogen, deuterium and neon targets is observed. The slope parameter of thet distribution is 3.3±0.8 (GeV)?2. The parity-violating (PV) asymmetry of inclusive π- production in electron scattering from a liquid deuterium target was measured at backward angles. The measurement was conducted as a part of the G0 experiment, at a beam energy of 360 MeV. The physics process dominating pion production for these kinematics is quasifree photoproduction off the neutron via the Δ0 resonance. In the context of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, this asymmetry is related to a low-energy constant d(Δ)- that characterizes the parity-violating γNΔ coupling. Zhu et al. calculated d(Δ)- in a model benchmarked by the large asymmetries seen in hyperon weak radiative decays, and predicted potentially large asymmetries for this process, ranging from A(γ)-=-5.2 to +5.2 ppm. The measurement performed in this work leads to A(γ)-=-0.36±1.06±0.37±0.03 ppm (where sources of statistical, systematic and theoretical uncertainties are included), which would disfavor enchancements considered by Zhu et al. proportional to V(ud)/V(us). The measurement is part of a program of inelastic scattering measurements that were conducted by the G0 experiment, seeking to determine the N-Δ axial transition form factors using PV electron scattering.  相似文献

The relative abilities of word frequency, contextual diversity, and semantic distinctiveness to predict accuracy of spoken word recognition in noise were compared using two data sets. Word frequency is the number of times a word appears in a corpus of text. Contextual diversity is the number of different documents in which the word appears in that corpus. Semantic distinctiveness takes into account the number of different semantic contexts in which the word appears. Semantic distinctiveness and contextual diversity were both able to explain variance above and beyond that explained by word frequency, which by itself explained little unique variance.  相似文献

The carrier-envelope phase of the pulse train emitted by a 10-fs mode-locked laser has been stabilized such that carrier-envelope phase coherence is maintained for at least 150 s (measurement limited). The phase coherence time was measured independently of the feedback loop.  相似文献

We report a new measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa parameter Vub made with a sample of 9.7 x 10(6) BB- events collected with the CLEO II detector. Using heavy quark theory, we combine the observed yield of leptons from semileptonic B decay in the end-point momentum interval 2.2-2.6 GeV/c with recent CLEO II data on B-->X(s)gamma to find Vub = (4.08+/-0.34+/-0.44+/-0.16+/-0.24)x10(-3), where the first two uncertainties are experimental and the last two are from theory.  相似文献

Double-emulsion droplets may be assembled into highly concentric shells using a uniform AC electric field to induce dipole/dipole interactions. The resulting force centers the inner droplet with respect to the outer shell if the outer droplet has a higher dielectric constant than the ambient, suspending liquid. The dielectric constant of the inner droplet does not influence this condition. Applying an electric field >104 Vrms/m achieves centering of approximately 3–6 mm diameter droplets suspended in ~10 centipoise liquids within ~60 s. If the outer shell is electrically conductive, the effect depends strongly on frequency. In the case of the monomer-containing liquids requisite to forming foam shells for laser target fabrication, the electrical field frequency must be ~10 MHz or higher. Because of very stringent requirements imposed on the concentricity and sphericity of laser targets, electric field induced droplet distortion must be minimized. Consequently, the liquid constituents must be matched in density to ~0.1%.  相似文献

At the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR), we have applied 3He neutron spin filters (NSFs) to the instruments where 3He NSFs are advantageous, such as thermal triple-axis spectrometry, small-angle neutron scattering, and diffuse reflectometry. We present the status of our development and application of this method, including polarized gas production by spin-exchange optical pumping, magnetostatic cavities for storage of the polarized gas on the beam line, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based, on-line monitoring and reversal of the 3He polarization. We present the status of developing user-friendly interfaces incorporated into the instrument software to handle these 3He neutron spin filters while taking data and performing data analysis. Finally we discuss the status of development of a polarization capability on the multi-axis crystal spectrometer, which requires polarization analysis over a 220° angular range.  相似文献
