Gas solubility of carbon dioxide in poly(lactic acid) at high pressures: Thermal treatment effect

The sorption of carbon dioxide in glassy Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films was studied by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) at high pressures. Two thermal treatments, melted and quenched, were performed in PLA with two different L:D contents, 80:20 and 98:2, films and compared with a third thermal protocol, annealed, and used in a previous work. The results obtained show that for pressures higher than 2 MPa, the carbon dioxide solubility is larger in PLA 80:20 than in PLA 98:2, indicating that the L:D plays a dominant role on this property. The thermal treatments only affect the gas solubility in PLA 98:2. Sorption isotherms at temperatures 303, 313, and 323 K, below the glass transition temperature of the polymer, and pressures up to 5 MPa were measured and analyzed with three different models, the dual‐mode sorption model, the Flory–Huggins equation, and a modified dual‐mode sorption model where the Henry's law term was substituted by the Flory–Huggins equation. This last model performs especially well for CO₂ in PLA 80:20, due to the convex upward curvature of the solubility isotherms for that system. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stimulated Raman scattering by C<Subscript>12</Subscript>H<Subscript>22</Subscript>O<Subscript>11</Subscript> sugar (sucrose)

The efficient Stokes and anti-Stokes laser emissions with Raman frequency shift at about 2960 cm^?1 are excited in a food C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁ sugar (sucrose) single crystal under pulsed pumping. Other (χ⁽²⁾ + χ⁽³⁾) effects of the parametric Raman generation are also detected.     

The effect of multipath on the detection of symbol-rate spectrallines by delay and multiply receivers

The effect of a secondary path signal on the detectability of the symbol rate spectral line of a binary phase-shift keyed (BPSK) signal by a delay and multiply receiver is investigated. The measure of detectability used is the rate line signal-to-noise ratio. The parameters that define the secondary path signal are initially modeled as deterministic quantities; the phase of the secondary path signal is then taken to be a random variable independent and uniform on (0, 2π). It is found that, with deterministic path parameters, the presence of a secondary path can seriously affect the detectability of BPSK rate lines. When the phase is taken to be uniform on (0, 2π) over the receiver observation time, then the delay and multiply receiver performs as if no multipath is present. In this case, a noncoherent power addition of the primary and secondary path signals occurs     

Spectral properties of some problems in mechanics of strongly nonhomogeneous media

Spectral properties of the following three homogenized problems in the mechanics of strongly nonhomogeneous media are considered: the “double porosity” problem, the oscillation problem for a mixture of two viscous compressible liquids, and the oscillation of a medium consisting of an elastic frame and a viscous liquid. For all three cases results on the structure of the spectrum and on the existence of so-called “spectral gaps” are obtained.     

On multiple integrals represented as a linear form in 1, ζ(3), ζ(5),..., ζ(2<Emphasis Type="Italic">k</Emphasis> − 1)

A theorem on the presentability of a multiple integral as a linear form in 1, ζ(3), ζ(5),..., ζ(2k − 1) over ℚ is proved. This theorem refines the results recently obtained by D. Vasiliev, V. Ionic relaxation in nematic liquid crystal cells

We investigate the dependence of the relaxation time of the current flowing in a nematic cell submitted to an external dc voltage on the physical properties of the substrate. We show that previously presented analyses of the same problem are not very useful for practical applications. We compare our theoretical predictions with experimental data, and show that the agreement is rather good. The influence of the adsorption-desorption phenomenon on the relaxation time is also discussed.     

Recombination lifetime profiling in very thin Si epitaxial layersused for bipolar VLSI

A recently proposed measurement technique (P. Spirito and G. Cocorullo, IEEE Trans. Electron Devices, vol.ED-32, no.9, p.1708-13, 1985) to evaluate the recombination lifetime along epitaxial layers is used to characterize the quality of very thin Si epitaxial layers used for bipolar technology. The experimental results show the ability of the technique to give accurate and detailed information on the quality of epilayers that could be useful in monitoring and improving the growth process. The experimental results show that the lifetime values in thin epilayers are not correlated with doping profiles in the same layers; moreover, they are only slightly dependent on different processes used to make the test devices
