Discretization of the solutions to Poisson’s equation

Sharp estimates (in the power scale) are obtained for the discretization error in the solutions to Poisson’s equation whose right-hand side belongs to a Korobov class. Compared to the well-known Korobov estimate, the order is almost doubled and has an ultimate value in the power scale.     

Polynomial-time computation of the degree of a dominant morphism in zero characteristic. II

Consider a projective algebraic variety W which is an irreducible component of the set of all common zeros of a family of homogeneous polynomials of degrees less than d in n + 1 variables over a field of zero characteristic. Consider a dominant rational morphism from W to W′ given by homogeneous polynomials of degree d′. We suggest algorithms for constructing objects in general position related to this morphism. They generalize some algorithms from the first part of the paper to the case dim W > dim W′. These algorithms are deterministic and polynomial in (dd′)n and the size of the input. Distributed feedback multipeak laser emission in Rhodamine 6G doped organic-inorganic hybrids

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials were prepared from an ureasil precursor (ureapropyltriethoxysilane designated as UPTES) and acrylic acid modified zirconium (IV) n-propoxide. Thin films containing rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) were prepared by spin-coating on glass substrates with different Zr:Si molar ratios (Zr:Si = 75:25, 50:50 and 25:75). Refractive index, thickness, number of propagating modes and attenuation coefficient were measured at 543.5, 632.8 and 1550 nm wavelengths by the prism coupling technique. Distributed feedback (DFB) laser effect was observed and studied as a function of films thickness and refractive index.     

Estimates for the Second Order Derivatives of Eigenvectors in Thin Anisotropic Plates with Variable Thickness

For the second order derivatives of eigenvectors in a thin anisotropic heterogeneous plate Ω_h, we derive estimates of their weighted L₂-norms with majorants whose dependence on the plate thickness h and on the eigenvalue number is expressed explicitly. These estimates maintain the asymptotic sharpness throughout the entire spectrum, whereas inside its low-frequency band the majorants remain bounded as h → +0. The latter is a rather unexpected fact, because for the first eigenfunction u¹ of a similar boundary-value problem for a scalar second order differential operator with variable coefficients, the norm ‖∇ _x ² u⁰; L₂(Ω_h)‖ is of order h⁻¹ and grows as h tends to zero. Analogue of a spin flop phase transition for an array of magnetic moments with dipole interaction

In a two-dimensional array of magnetic moments with planar magnetization and relatively weak anisotropy in the basal plane, a stepwise phase transition is induced by an external magnetic field parallel to the easy axis of the system. This transition is similar to the spin flop phase transition in weakly anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnets with the significant difference that it is accompanied by the rearrangement of the sublattice structure of the magnet; i.e., it can be interpreted as a topological transition. The transition should manifest itself for arrays of submicron magnetic particles (magnetic dots) on nonmagnetic substrates, which have recently become the object of intensive research.     

Two-photon revival-collapse phenomenon in the evolution of the quadrature squeezing of the four-photon Jaynes-Cummings model

We prove that the revival-collapse phenomenon occurring in the atomic inversion of the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model, when the mode is initially prepared in the coherent state and the atom is in the excited state, can be obtained from the evolution of the quadrature squeezing of the four-photon Jaynes-Cummings model.     

Quantum-interference effects for gamma radiation under crossing-anticrossing conditions for nuclear levels in an RF field

A new approach to observing the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency in gamma optics is proposed. The propagation of a resonant photon in a ⁵⁷Fe magnetic medium in an applied rf field is considered for this purpose. It is shown that, under crossing-anticrossing conditions, a resonant rf field substantially changes the gamma-optical properties of the medium, which become dependent on the parameters of the field. This opens the possibility for exercising a coherent control of the photon group velocity and a controllable filtration of unpolarized gamma radiation in a sample.     

The dielectric constant of barium mono-chalcogenides and their improved band gap results

We have applied Engel-Vosko exchange energy within density functional theory, to calculate the electronic structure and the optical properties of BaX (X = Te, Se, and S) compounds via full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. We have found that this improves the band gap results comparing to our previous work in which we had made use of Perdew et al. exchange energy functional. We have also calculated the dielectric constant of these compounds, using both Perdew et al. and Engel-Vosko schemes. It is shown that Engel-Vosko exchange energy functional leads to a better result. We have also reported the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the results.     

Half-bridge inverter using 4H-SiC gate turn-off thyristors

This paper reports on the first demonstration of a half-bridge power inverter constructed from silicon carbide gate turn-off thyristors (GTOs) operated in the conventional GTO mode. This circuit was characterized with input bus voltages of up to 600 VDC and 2 A (peak current density of 540 A/cm²) with resistive loads using a pulse-width modulated switching frequency of 2 kHz. We discuss the implications of the thyristor's electrical characteristics and the circuit topology on the overall operation of the half-bridge circuit. This work has determined the conservative critical rate of rise value of the off-state voltage to be 200 V/μs in these devices     

Indirect Methods For Determination of The Protective Effects of Coating Films on The Surface of Crystals

The extents of the protective effects of coating films on the surface of crystals were determined. Three different samples were made with different quantities of coating fluid (Sepifilm LP 010 in 10% aqueous solution). Since the atomizing rate was constant, the coating time increased in parallel with the volume of coating fluid applied. The direct measurement of film thickness and smoothness is very difficult, and therefore indirect methods were used. Dimenhydrinate was chosen as model drug; this is a heat-sensitive antihistamine with a low melting point. This temperature can be reached during the tableting process. The behaviour of samples on exposure to heat was examined by differential scanning calorimetry. The water uptakes of the samples were determined with an Enslin apparatus. Plasticity was studied with an instrumented tablet machine. These indirect methods (thermal conductivity, water uptake and plasticity measurements) revealed connections between the results of the various experiments. An overlong coating time decreased the protective effect of the coating film. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.
