A fast gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method for the determination of stimulants and narcotics in urine

A fast method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of 52 stimulants and narcotics excreted unconjugated in urine by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The procedure involves the liquid/liquid extraction of the analytes from urine at strong alkaline pH and the injection of the extract into a GC/MS instrument with a fast GC column (10 m × 0.18 mm i.d.); the short column allows the complete separation of the 52 analytes in a chromatographic run of 8 min. The method has been fully validated giving lower limits of detection (LLODs) satisfactory for its application to antidoping analysis as well as to forensic toxicology. The repeatability of the concentrations and the retention times are good both for intra‐ and for inter‐day experiments (%CV of concentrations always lower than 15 and %CV of retention times lower than 0.6). In addition, the analytical bias is satisfactory (A% always >15%). The method proposed here would be particularly useful whenever there are time constraints and the analyses have to be completed in the shortest possible time. Synthesis,characterization and anticancer activity of new palladacycles derived from chiral α‐diimines

Optically pure α‐diimines quantitatively obtained in solvent‐free conditions starting from 2,3‐butanedione and (S)‐(?)‐1‐phenylethylamine and (S)‐(?)‐1‐(4‐methylphenyl)ethylamine, respectively, yielded the new chiral mono‐Pd complexes 2a–b, which have been partly characterized by IR, ¹H‐ and ¹³C‐NMR spectroscopies along with MS‐FAB⁺ spectrometry. The crystal and molecular structure for palladacycle 2a has been fully confirmed by single‐crystal X‐ray studies. Studies in vitro of 2a–b have displayed growth inhibition against different classes of cancer: leukemia (K‐562 CML), colon cancer (HCT‐15), breast cancer (MCF‐7), central nervous system (U‐251 Glio) and prostate cancer (PC‐3) cell lines. Higher dimensional Enriques varieties and automorphisms of generalized Kummer varieties

We define Enriques varieties as a higher dimensional generalization of Enriques surfaces and construct examples by using fixed point free automorphisms on generalized Kummer varieties. We also classify all automorphisms of generalized Kummer varieties that come from an automorphism of the underlying abelian surface.     

Collapsing irreducible 3-manifolds with nontrivial fundamental group

Let M be a closed, orientable, irreducible, non-simply connected 3-manifold. We prove that if M admits a sequence of Riemannian metrics which volume-collapses and whose sectional curvature is locally controlled, then M is a graph manifold. This is the last step in Perelman’s proof of Thurston’s Geometrisation Conjecture.     

Tetrathiafulvalene hydrazone: efficient synthon for the synthesis of novel bidentate redox active ligands

The synthesis and the ability of TTF-hydrazone to act as a versatile precursor for the design of electroactive ligands are reported together with the chelating ability of these ligands through their M(CO)₄ complexes, (M = Mo, W).     

Glycosyl-nucleoside fluorinated amphiphiles as components of nanostructured hydrogels

The synthesis of two novel glycosyl-nucleoside fluorinated amphiphiles (GNFs) derived from the 2H,2H,3H,3H-perfluoro-undecanoyl hydrophobic chain is described. The GNF amphiphiles, which feature either β-d-glucopyranosyl or β-d-lactopyranosyl moieties linked to a thymine base via a 1,2,3 triazole linker, were prepared using a ‘double click’ chemistry route. Surface tension measurements, gelation properties, and TEM studies show that GNFs spontaneously assemble into supramolecular structures. Similarly to their hydrocarbon analogues (GNLs), the GNFs have unique gelation properties in water. A minimum hydrogelation concentration of 0.1% (w/w), was determined in the case of the β-d-glucopyranosyl derivative. Cell viability studies indicate that fluorocarbon GNF 5 was not toxic for human cells (Huh7), whereas hydrocarbon analogue GNL is toxic above 100 μm.
