A Raman study of the structural properties of YBa2(Cu1 − xFex)3Oy

The effects of Fe-substitution of YBa₂Cu₃O_y have been investigated by means of Raman scattering, X-ray diffraction, resistivity and susceptibility measurements. A series of samples of YBa₂(Cu_{1 − x}Fe_x)₃O_y with different dopant concentration (0 x 0.15) has been prepared in two batches, the second set having undergone twice the heat and mechanical treatment used to produce the first batch. Considerable improvement in the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, is obtained upon reprocessing. A phase transformation from orthorhombic to tetragonal symmetry is observed for x=0.05 from the X-ray measurements in agreement with previous work. Using a micro-Raman technique, all five A_g vibrational modes have been measured and their dependence on Fe-concentration is analyzed. There are indications that iron substitutes for copper at both sites and that the structure is a mixture of orthorhombic and tetragonal microdomains for all x.

This paper discusses monotonicity concepts to compare iteration sequences and common fixed points of point-to-set mappings. Three particular applications are presented. A new proof of the Gronwall lemma is first introduced, and then the monotonicity of input-output systems is analysed. Matrices with nonnegative inverses are finally examined.

On the stable posture of a pair of parallel cylinders in a uniform flow *

The stable posture of a pair of parallel circular cylinders in a uniform flow was experimentally studied when it was free to rotate about an axis at the middle of the two cylinders. The cylinder pair comes to rest facing the oncoming flow side by side, the line connecting the centers of the two cylinders being perpendicular to the flow, when s/d = 0.5, where s is the distance between the center of rotation and the central axis of each cylinder and d is the diameter of the cylinder. When s/d = 1.0 or 1.5, the cylinder pair is stable both in tandem, with one cylinder behind the other, and in side-by-side arrangements to the oncoming flow. When s/d 2.0, the cylinder pair is stable only in tandem arrangements.     

Grid sensitivity analysis

This paper presents a method to compute the sensitivities of displacements and natural frequencies to the changes in grid locations. The sensitivities are computed within using the semi-analytical method via a program. New software was developed to assist in the selection of design variables and plot the spatial variation of the sensitivities on the finite element model. Two example problems demonstrate the technique.

High-depth-resolution SIMS analysis for InGaAs/InP interfaces

The influence of the primary ion impact conditions and of the surface chemical composition on beam-induced effects is investigated in order to achieve a high-depth-resolution analysis for the InGaAs/InP interfaces. The main result is that the oxygen adsorption with an appropriate pressure on the Cs⁺ bombarded surface can suppress the element-dependence of depth resolution which is an artefact in SIMS analysis.</sup>
