Inclusive production of vector mesons in π+ p interactions at 250 GeV/c

We report on a study of ρ⁰, ρ⁺, ω, \(\bar K^{*0} (892)\) andK ^*0 (892) inclusive production in π⁺ p interactions at 250 GeV/c, for ρ⁺, \(\bar K^{*0} (892)\) for the first time in a π⁺ p experiment. The data are compared withK ⁺ p data in the same experiment, with results of other experiments and with quark-parton models. Interesting differences are found between ρ^+,0 and ω production.     

The decay of theZ boson into four massive fermions

We calculate, the partial width for the tree level decay of theZ boson into four massive fermions atO(α²) and \(O(\alpha _s^2 )\) . Analytic expressions for the helicity amplitudes are presented. We also present ‘observable’ widths for the case when the fermions are energetic and well separated, and make a comparison between the massive and massless matrix elements in this region. We make a direct comparison between the four fermion decay and the production and decay of the Higgs boson via the Bjorken mechanism, \(Z \to H\mu ^ + \mu ^ - \to q\bar q\mu ^ + \mu ^ - \) . Provided the detector resolution is good, \(\Delta m_{q\bar q} \) ～ few GeV, the Higgs signal stands clearly above the four fermion background for all Higgs boson masses considered.     

The asymptotic behaviour of certain entire functions of order zero

Summary A certain class of entire functionsF(s) of order zero which are asymptotically equal to the sum of just two neighbouring terms of their power series when |s| with |args| < – for any fixed > 0, is investigated. Which two terms one has to take, depends upons. It is shown that these functions have infinitely many negative zeros, and the asymptotic behaviour of the zeros is also determined.     

Integrals involving Gegenbauer and Hermite polynomials on the imaginary axis

Summary The integral _- [C _2n (it)]^–2(1+t ²)^–-1/2 dt is evaluated for > –1/2 whereC _2n is the Gegenbauer polynomial of degree 2n. Letting gives the value _- [H _2n (it)]^–2 e ^{1-1/2t 2} dt involving the Hermite polynomialH _2n of degree 2n. The result is obtained using Gegenbauer functions of the second kind.     

Quantum BRST charge for quadratically nonlinear Lie algebras

We consider the construction of a nilpotent BRST charge for extensions of the Virasoro algebra of the form {T _a ,T _b }=f _ab ^c T _c +V _ab ^cd T _c T _d , (classical algebras in terms of Poisson brackets) and [T _a ,T _b ]=h _ab I+f _ab ^c T _c +V _ab ^cd (T _c T _d )(quantum algebras in terms of commutator brackets; normal ordering of the product (T _c T _d ) is understood). In both cases we assume that the set of generators {T _a } splits into a set {H _i } generating an ordinary Lie algebra and remaining generators {S }, such that only theV _ij are nonvanishing. In the classical case a nilpotent BRST charge can always be constructed; for the quantum case we derive a condition which is necessary and sufficient for the existence of a nilpotent BRST charge. Non-trivial examples are the spin-3 algebra with central chargec=100 and theso(N)-extended superconformal algebras with levelS=–2(N–3).     

Rational contractive and unitary interpolants in realized form

A solution of the rational Nehari problem is given in terms of a realization. Other aspects of this problem, like one step extension, maximum entropy interpolants and unitary interpolants, are also analyzed for the rational case. The results are based on earlier work of H.
