Total synthesis of (3S,4S,2′S)- and (3R,4R,2′S)-viridiofungin A triester

The total synthesis of an alkylcitrate secondary metabolite from the fungi Trichoderma viride is described. An ester dienolate [2,3]-Wittig rearrangement and a S. Julia-Kocienski olefination served as key C/C-connecting transformations. The highly convergent synthesis consists of a longest linear sequence of 17 steps.

The Translation Invariant Massive Nelson Model: I. The Bottom of the Spectrum

In this paper we analyze the bottom of the energy-momentum spectrum of the translation invariant Nelson model, describing one electron linearly coupled to a second quantized massive scalar field. Our results are valid for all values of the coupling constant and include an HVZ theorem, non-degeneracy of ground states, existence of isolated groundstates in dimensions 1 and 2, non-existence of ground states embedded in the bottom of the essential spectrum in dimensions 3 and 4, (i.e., at total momenta where no isolated groundstate eigenvalue exists), and we study regularity and monotonicity properties of the bottom of the essential spectrum, as a function of total momentum. Recombination of Au25+ with free electrons at low energies

The origin of the widely observed enhancement of rates for electron-ion recombination at very low energies is still unknown. We investigated the recombination of Au²⁵⁺ with free electrons in a merged-beams experiment at the UNILAC accelerator of the GSI in Darmstadt. At E _rel= 0 eV we found an enormous enhancement factor of 365 compared to the theory of radiative recombination. An increase of the electron density by a factor of 10 had not much influence on the measured rate coefficient. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Norms on unitizations of banach algebras revisited

Let A be an algebra without unit. If ∥ ∥ is a complete regular norm on A it is known that among the regular extensions of ∥ ∥ to the unitization of A there exists a minimal (operator extension) and maximal (ℓ₁-extension) which are known to be equivalent. We shall show that the best upper bound for the ratio of these two extensions is exactly 3. This improves the results represented by A. K. Gaur and Z. V. Kovářík and later by T. W. Palmer.
