Study of occupational health impact of atmospheric pollution on exposed workers at an iron and steel complex by using neutron activation analysis of scalp hair

The occupational health impact of atmospheric pollution on exposed workers at one iron and steel complex was studied by instrumental neutron activation analysis of workers' hair samples and medical examination. The experimental results indicate that there is a positive correlation between the high inhalation amounts of iron and other trace elements by the exposed workers and the symptom of their high blood pressure and hypoglycemia, which implies that the atmospheric environment polluted by iron and steel industry has an adverse health impact on the exposed workers. The measures to relieve and abate the occupational diseases caused by air-borne particulate matter should be taken     

Highly regioselective rearrangement of 2-substituted vinylepoxides catalyzed by gallium(III) triflate

Gallium(III) triflate catalyzed the rearrangement of 2-substituted vinylepoxides into beta,gamma-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with high regio- and chemoselectivity (>97/3) in low catalyst loading (1-5 mol %). The alkyl-substituted trimethylsilylvinyl epoxides gave beta,gamma-unsaturated ketone, but aryl-substituted vinylepoxides gave the aldehydes instead.     

Separation of gallic acid from Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc by high-speed counter-current chromatography

Gallic acid was separated from a n-butanol extract of the fruit of Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc by high-speed countercurrent chromatography in two steps using two solvent systems composed of ethyl-acetate-ethanol n-butanol-water (5:1.8:6, v/v/v) and ethyl acetate-ethanol-water (5:0.5:6, v/v/v) successively. From 1 g of n-butanol extract the method produced 60 mg of gallic acid at a purity of 97%.     

A metallo-capped polyrotaxane containing calix[4]arenes and cyclodextrins and its highly selective binding for Ca2+

A water-soluble nanometer-scale metallocapped polyrotaxane has been prepared by the inclusion complexation of azo-calixarenes with metallo-bridged bis(beta-CD)s, displaying highly selective binding for Ca(2+).     

Calculation of avoided crossings for highly excited Stark states of Rb

Using the method of diagonalization, in which zero-field wavefunctions from a potential model are chosen as a basis, we calculate positions and widths of anticrossings for highly excited Stark states of Rb with principal quantum number n up to 49. We obtain the theoretical positions and widths in good agreement with available experimental values, and we present scaling laws of the field positions and widths of anticrossings that can be used to provide information for future experiments.     

One-Pot Formation of Carbonates from the Reactions of Carbonyl Compounds with Samarium Diiodide and Methyl Chloroformate

Treatment of carbonyl compounds with SmI₂ and methyl chloroformate in the presence of molecular sieves provides the cyclic carbonates or biscarbonates of pinacols. This one-pot reaction proceeds rapidly even with aliphatic ketones. The stereochemistry obtained by this procedure is different from that of conventional pinacolic couplings.     

Synthesis and analytical application of tribromocarboxyarsenazo as a new chromogenic reagent for zirconium

A new chromogenic reagent tribromocarboxyarsenazo has been synthesized and the chromogenic reaction of this reagent with zirconium studied. In the medium of 0.5 mol/1 HCl, a blue complex is formed by the reaction of zirconium with tribromocarboxyarsenazo. The maximum absorption of the complex is at 633 nm, and the apparent molar absorptivity is 4.8 x 10(4) 1/mol/cm. Beer's law is obeyed over the zirconium concentration range 0-18, mug/25 ml. The method has been applied to the determination of zirconium in aluminum, copper and magnesium alloys with satisfactory results.
