Sandwich structure containing liquid crystal polymer grafted on polymer support

Graft post-polymerization of mesogenic monomers onto fluorine-containing polymer support was initiated by the simultaneous action of vacuum ultraviolet radiation and atomic oxygen. The resultant two-layer structure possesses the combined physical–mechanical properties of the polymer-supporting film and the optical characteristics of the anisotropic liquid crystal layer.     

Comb-shaped polymers as effective flow modifiers for thermoplastic polymers

Peculiarities of the rheological properties of blends composed of thermoplastic polymer and polyacrylates are studied. The comparison of blends containing comb-shaped polymers of differing side-chain lengths shows that the flow mechanism changes with shortening side-group length. This leads to higher viscosity and elasticity of the combshaped component and, at the same time, results in the dramatic decrease in the blend viscosity, even at combshaped additive low content.     

A portable X-ray source for testing of TRD/ALICE radiators and chambers

Portable X-ray sources were designed and produced for experimental study of radiator absorption uniformity and mapping of large-scale drift chamber gain. The tests are performed on-line with creation of the Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) for the ALICE experiment at CERN. The source is a key element of automatic scanner, and it produces X-ray photons in the energy range up to 10 keV with required intensity. The design and characteristics of the source are described. Damage to extreme-ultraviolet Sc/Si multilayer mirrors exposed to intense 46.9-nm laser pulses

The damage threshold and damage mechanism of extreme-ultraviolet Sc/Si multilayer mirror coatings are investigated with focused nanosecond pulses at 46.9-nm radiation from a compact capillary-discharge laser. Damage threshold fluences of approximately 0.08 J/cm2 are measured for coatings deposited on both borosilicate glass and Si substrates. The use of scanning and transmission electron microscopy and small-angle x-ray diffraction techniques reveals the thermal nature of the damage mechanism. The results are relevant to the use of newly developed high-flux extreme-ultraviolet sources in applications.
