Semidiscrete finite element Galerkin approximations to the equations of motion arising in the Oldroyd model

In this paper, a semidiscrete finite element Galerkin methodfor the equations of motion arising in the 2D Oldroyd modelof viscoelastic fluids with zero forcing function is analysed.Some new a priori bounds for the exact solutions are derivedunder realistically assumed conditions on the data. Moreover,the long-time behaviour of the solution is established. By introducinga Stokes–Volterra projection, optimal error bounds forthe velocity in the L(L²) as well as in the L(H¹)-norms andfor the pressure in the L(L²)-norm are derived which are validuniformly in time t > 0.     

Reduction of range walk error in direct detection laser radar using a Geiger mode avalanche photodiode

In this paper a new technique to improve the accuracy of direct detection time-of-flight (TOF) laser radar using a Geiger mode avalanche photodiode (APD) by reducing range walk error is presented. Assuming that the creation of primary electrons in the APD is Poisson-distributed, a mathematical model for the detection probability of each time bin in a TOF histogram is derived. It is shown that the range walk error depends on the energy of the laser-return pulse at the Geiger mode APD with the mathematical model regarded as the TOF histogram of multiple laser pulses in a single-hit case. The method which reduces the range walk error with the center of mass detection in the TOF histogram is then proposed, and the experiment for its proof is carried out.     

Quasinormal Modes for Electromagnetic Field Perturbation of the Asymptotic Safe Black Hole

In this paper, the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of electromagnetic field perturbation to asymptotic safe (AS) black hole are discussed. Through six-order WKB approach we investigate the effects of quantum correction to the quasinormal modes (QNMs) numerically. Meanwhile by means of finite difference method, the evolutions of such perturbation to the safe black hole are figured out with corresponding parameters. It is found that the stability of black hole remains although the decay frequency and damping speed of oscillations are respectively increased and lowered by the quantum correction to classic Schwarzschild black hole.     

Giant Asymmetric Transmission and Circular Dichroism with Angular Tunability in Chiral Terahertz Metamaterials

Inspired by the chiral structure from mode interaction, a chiral terahertz metamaterial and its complementary structure with the coexistence of asymmetric transmission and circular dichroism response are designed. The asymmetric transmission happens in the presence of electric and magnetic modes perpendicular to each other, resulting from intrinsic chirality under normal incidence. Circular dichroism exists in the presence of electric and magnetic modes parallel to each other under oblique incidence because of extrinsic chirality. Both asymmetric transmission and circular dichroism are enhanced by complementary structures, benefitting from the coupling between adjacent units. The maximum of chiral parameter κ can achieve 450, which is one hundred times higher than previously reported. The chiral response can be tuned by the incident angle and is sensitive to the environmental refractive index. The results highlight the potential applications of these metamaterials in chiral sensing and polarization transformation devices.     

Unusual Normal and Superconducting State Properties Observed in Hydrothermal Fe_(1-δ)Se Flakes

The electronic and superconducting properties of Fe_(1-δ)Se single-crystal flakes grown hydrothermally are studied by the transport measurements under zero and high magnetic fields up to 38.5 T. The results contrast sharply with those previously reported for nematically ordered Fe Se by chemical-vapor-transport(CVT) growth. No signature of the electronic nematicity, but an evident metal-to-nonmetal crossover with increasing temperature,is detected in the normal state of the present hydrothermal samples. Interestingly, a higher superconducting critical temperature T_c of 13.2 K is observed compared to a suppressed T_c of 9 K in the presence of the nematicity in the CVT Fe Se. Moreover, the upper critical field in the zero-temperature limit is found to be isotropic with respect to the field direction and to reach a higher value of ~42 T, which breaks the Pauli limit by a factor of 1.8.
