Space-variant polarization manipulation for far-field polarimetry by use of subwavelength dielectric gratings

A method for polarimetric measurement that uses a discrete space-variant subwavelength dielectric grating is presented. One retrieves the polarization state by measuring the far-field intensity of a beam emerging from the grating followed by a polarizer. The analysis for a partially polarized, quasi-monochromatic beam is performed by use of the beam coherence polarization matrix along with an extended van Cittert-Zernike theorem. We experimentally demonstrate polarization measurements of both fully and partially polarized light.     

Soliton control and bloch-wave filtering in periodic photonic lattices

We suggest a novel approach to soliton control and routing based on Bloch-wave filtering in periodic photonic structures. Taking a binary waveguide array as an example, we demonstrate that spatial solitons that belong to different spectral gaps can be selectively reflected from or transmitted through an engineered defect, which acts as a low- or high-pass filter for Bloch waves.     

Surface-emitted terahertz-wave difference-frequency generation in two-dimensional periodically poled lithium niobate

We report on the demonstration of surface-emitted terahertz- (THz-) wave difference-frequency generation from two-dimensional (2D) periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The two orthogonal periodic structures individually compensate for both the phase mismatch of the launched lasers and the generated THz wave. Tunable 1.5-1.8 THz wave generation with a bandwidth of 10-GHz was obtained by use of two 2D PPLN crystals. We also confirmed that THz waves were simultaneously generated into two opposite directions, which suggests the possibility of higher THz-wave output power.     

Crystal structure, chemical bonding, and phase relations of the novel compound Co4Al(7+x)Si(2-x) (0.27 < or = x < or = 1.05)

The title compound was detected and characterized during a systematic study of the Al-rich part of the Co-Al-Si system. The crystal structure was established via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It represents a new type of structure of intermetallic compounds (Pearson symbol mC26, space group C2/m). The homogeneity range of the phase Co4Al(7+x)Si(2-x) (0.27(3) < or = x < or = 1.05(2)) and equilibria with neighboring phases were studied by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray powder diffraction. The lattice parameters of the compound were found to vary between Al-poor and Al-rich composition (a = 11.949(1)-12.042(1) A, b = 3.9986(4)-4.0186(4) A, c = 7.6596(8)-7.6637(9) A, and beta = 106.581(7)-106.140(7) degrees). A partial disorder caused by the Al/Si substitution in one of the five main group element positions was found, and different ordering models yielding different Al/Si occupation motifs and different distributions of interatomic distances are discussed in detail. Chemical bonding analysis with the electron localization function (ELF) reveals a covalently bonded Al/Si network and rather ionic interactions between Co and the network.

Calderón constants of finite-dimensional couples

The Calderón constant æ( $\bar X$ ) is a numerical invariant of finite-dimensional Banach couple $\bar X = (X_0 ,X_1 )$ measuring its interpolation property with respect to linear operators acting in $\bar X$ . In the paper we prove the duality relation æ( $\bar X$ )≈ æ( $\bar X$ ^*)and calculate the asymptotic behavior of æ( $\bar X$ ) as dim $\bar X \to \infty $ for a few “classical” Banach couples.
