Measurements of equilibrium water vapor pressures for the dehydration of magnesium, manganese and cobalt formate dihydrates by means of the transpiration method

The equilibrium water vapor pressures for the thermal dehydration of Mg(HCO(2))(2). 2H(2)O, Mn(HCO(2))(2). 2H(2)O and Co(HCO(2))(2). 2H(2)O were measured by means of the transpiration method. These hydrates form isomorphous crystals with space group P21/c. In this structure, the water molecules lie in the planes parallel to the (100) planes. Thermodynamic data such as DeltaG, DeltaH and DeltaS were derived from the values of the water vapor pressures. The relationship between these thermodynamic data and the crystal structures is discussed.     

Tuning the Electronic Properties and Acid‐Response Behavior of N‐Heteroacene‐Based π‐Conjugated Liquids by Changing the Number of π‐Conjugated Substituents

We have designed and synthesized two room‐temperature‐fluorescent π‐conjugated liquids based on the N‐heteroacene framework ( 1 and 2 ). These two π‐conjugated liquids, which contained one and two thiophene rings, respectively, exhibited different electronic properties and rheology behaviors. Single‐crystal X‐ray analysis of dithiophene‐appended compound 4 revealed that two thiophene rings hindered the interactions of the imino N atoms with acids through the formation of interactions between the S atoms of the thiophene rings and the imino N atoms of the pyrazine group. On the other hand, monothiophene‐appended molecules 1 and 3 each contained an unhindered imino N atom on the opposite site to the thiophene ring. Upon dissolving various acids with different pK_a values in compounds 1 and 2 , these slight structural differences gave rise to marked differences in their acid‐response behaviors, thereby resulting in the emission of variously colored fluorescence in the liquid state. Furthermore, when acids with lower pK_a values was dissolved in compounds 1 and 2 , phase transition occurred from an isotropic liquid state to a self‐organized liquid‐crystalline phase.     

Structure of liquid-crystalline phases formed by N-acetyl-L-glutamic acid oligomeric benzyl esters –2H NMR study

A series of N-acetyl-L-glutamic acid oligopeptide benzyl esters with exact residue numbers 4, 6, and 12 has been synthesized by a stepwise procedure. For these oligopeptide–dioxane binary systems, the behavior of the liquid-crystalline phases has been examined␣by the use of ²H NMR, and the results indicate that highly ordered aggregates formed by these oligopeptides in dioxane are in an alignment similar to that in a nematic mesophase. Reverse aromatic cope rearrangement of 2-allyl-3-alkylideneindolines driven by olefination of 2-allylindolin-3-ones: synthesis of alpha-allyl-3-indole acetate derivatives

The reverse aromatic Cope rearrangement of 2-allyl-3-alkylideneindolines obtained by Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination of 2-allylindolin-3-ones was performed. When 2-allylindolin-3-ones were treated with phosphonium ylides in refluxing toluene, domino Wittig reaction and reverse aromatic Cope rearrangement took place to give alpha-allyl-3-indole acetate derivatives in good yields. The aromatization as a new driving force in the Cope rearrangement is preferable to the conjugation with the carbonyl and cyano groups and also to the alkyl substitution pattern, which are well-known driving forces.     

Phlomisflavosides A and B, new flavonol bisglycosides from Phlomis spinidens

From the aerial parts of Phlomis spinidens, two new flavonol bisglycosides, phlomisflavosides A (1) and B (2), were isolated together with the known compounds, astragalin, isoquercitrin, lamiridoside, phlomoside A, shanzhiside methyl ester, 8-O-acetylshanzhiside methyl ester, phlorigidoside C, rodioloside (=salidroside), forsythoside B, citroside A and lariciresinol-4'-O-beta-D-glucoside. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated based on spectral and chemical evidence.     

Optical modulator using metal-oxide-semiconductor type Si ring resonator

Electric-field drive optical modulators using a Si ring resonator were fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers. The fabricated resonators consisted of Si waveguides with width and thickness of 1.0 and 0.3 μm, respectively. In order to induce the linear electro-optic (EO) effect in the Si core layer, the strain was applied by covering the layer with Si₃N₄ film (0.26 μm thick) deposited by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) at 750 °C. The vertical electric-field was applied to the Si waveguide through the top and bottom cladding layers, and the optical output from the drop port at the resonance wavelength was measured. At a wavelength of 1501.6 nm, the optical modulation of 33% was obtained at 200V (electric-field at the silicon surface ∼3 × 10⁵ V/cm, nearly the breakdown field). The resonance wavelength was shifted toward the short wavelength side by applying both positive and negative voltages, this shift was explained by carrier concentration modulation. The linear EO effect in the Si core layer was not observed, presumably because the strain in the Si core layer was too small.     

Application of a green function to a metal containing a vacancy and an impurity atom

A double time Green function is used to obtain the interaction energy between a vacancy and a transition-metal impurity atom in noble metals. The main part of the interaction energy has the RKKY type expression.
