Efficiency Enhancement of Coaxial-Cavity Electron Cyclotron Resonance Maser by Tapering Guide Magnetic Field

A coaxial-cavity cyclotron resonance maser (CRM) oscillator with tapered guide magnetic field is proposed. It is shown that the transmission quality can be improved by tapering the guide magnetic field. Simulation indicates that the efficiency of a millimeter-wave gyrotron oscillator may be reached up to 38.7% by optimizing the tapered magnetic field.     

Thin-disc piezoceramic ultrasonic motor. Part II: system construction and control

Design and performance evaluation of an ultrasonic motor was discussed in [Wen et al., Thin-disc piezoelectric ultrasonic motor. Part I: design and performance evaluation, Ultrasonics]. Higher precision position control of piezoceramic ultrasonic motor depends on mechanical design and servo control of a very precise and adequate metrology. This paper proposes the design of a driving circuit and controller to deal with non-linearities behavior in the model of piezoceramic-driving ultrasonic motor. The performance of the driver and the effectiveness of the proposed controller are demonstrated by command inputs of sinusoidal and step signals. For comparison purpose, the ultrasonic motor is controlled using two methods: i.e., proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and sliding-mode control (SMC). It was proven that SMC would compensate automatically for unmodeled behaviors such as piezoceramic non-linearities and mechanical stick-slip phenomena. Furthermore, SMC scheme has been successfully applied to position tracking to demonstrate the excellent robust performance in noise rejection.     

Rugged distal tips for CO2 laser medicine

Low-loss and rugged distal tips for CO₂ laser have been proposed and fabricated based on a commercially available stainless steel (St) pipe. A method of smoothening the inner surface of the St pipe with a rough inner surface is put forward. Fabrication parameters, transmission properties, and mechanical strength of the cyclic olefin polymer-coated silver hollow St distal tip are experimentally discussed.

Efficient copper-catalyzed N-arylation of NH-containing heterocycles and sulfonamides with arenediazonium tetrafluoroborates

A practical copper-catalyzed N-arylation of NH-containing heterocycles with arenediazonium tetrafluoroborates has been developed using CuCl as catalyst and K₂CO₃ as additive under ligand-free conditions. This reaction system has wide substrate scope including imides, 1H-pyrazole, 1H-tetrazoles, 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one, and related sulfonamides and gives moderate to excellent yields (up to 95%) of the desired products. This strategy is very general, simple, environmentally friendly, and tolerant of oxygen.     

Templating α-helical poly(L-lysine)/polyanion complexes by nanostructured uniaxially oriented ultrathin polyethylene films

We report a templating effect of uniaxially oriented melt-drawn polyethylene (MD-PE) films on α-helical poly(L-lysine)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (α-PLL/PSS) complexes deposited by the layer-by-layer (LBL) method. The melt-drawing process induced an MD-PE fiber texture consisting of nanoscale lamellar crystals embedded in amorphous regions on the MD-PE film surface whereby the common crystallographic c axis is the PE molecular chain direction parallel to the uniaxial melt-drawing direction. The MD-PE film and the α-PLL/PSS deposit were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) using polarized light as a complementary method. Both methods revealed that α-PLL/PSS complexes adsorbed at the MD-PE surface were anisotropic and preferentially oriented perpendicular to the crystallographic c direction of the MD-PE film. Quantitatively, from AFM image analysis and ATR-FTIR dichroism of the amide II band of the α-PLL, mean cone opening angles of 12-18° for both rodlike α-PLL and the anisotropic α-PLL/PSS complexes with respect to the PE lamellae width direction were obtained. A model for the preferred alignment of α-PLL along the protruding PE lamellae is discussed, which is based on possible hydrophobic driving forces for the minimization of surface free energy at molecular and supermolecular topographic steps of the PE surface followed by electrostatic interactions between the interconnecting PSS and the α-PLL during layer-by-layer adsorption. This study elucidates the requirements and mechanisms involved in orienting biomolecules and may open up a path for designing templates to induce directed protein adsorption and cell growth by oriented polypeptide- or protein-modified PE surfaces.     

A Simple Proof of Dieudonn-Manin Classification Theorem

The Dieudonn-Manin classification theorem on φ-modules (φ-isocrystals) over a perfect field plays a very important role in p-adic Hodge theory. In this note, in a more general setting we give a new proof of this result, and in the course of the proof, we also give an explicit construction of the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of a φ-module.     

The MAP/PH/N retrial queue in a random environment

We consider the MAP/PH/N retrial queue with a finite number of sources operating in a finite state Markovian random environment. Two different types of multi-dimensional Markov chains are investigated describing the behavior of the system based on state space arrangements. The special features of the two formulations are discussed. The algorithms for calculating the stationary state probabilities are elaborated, based on which the main performance measures are obtained, and numerical examples are presented as well.     

An integrated inventory model with quality improvement and two-part credit policy

Trade credit financing plays a vital role in current business operations. Vendors extend payment dates to encourage sales, and buyers are not required to pay immediately after receiving products. This is equivalent to receiving a price reduction. Besides, buyers reduce their need for capital from bank loans. In addition, a number of defective products are produced during the production process. The number of defective items influences the on-hand inventory levels of buyers, service levels, and frequency of orders. To ensure that the analysis incorporates a realistic production environment, we developed an integrated inventory model with a two-part trade credit and considered an imperfect production process that can be improved by capital investment. The objective was to determine the optimal ordering, shipping, and quality improvement policies to maximize joint total profit. An iterative algorithm was established to determine the optimal strategy. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine the effects of changing parameter values on the optimal solution.     

(n,d)-Injective covers,n-coherent rings,and (n,d)-rings

It is known that a ring R is left Noetherian if and only if every left R-module has an injective (pre)cover. We show that (1) if R is a right n-coherent ring, then every right R-module has an (n, d)-injective (pre)cover; (2) if R is a ring such that every (n, 0)-injective right R-module is n-pure extending, and if every right R-module has an (n, 0)-injective cover, then R is right n-coherent. As applications of these results, we give some characterizations of (n, d)-rings, von Neumann regular rings and semisimple rings.
