Synthesis of chiral 2-(4-phenoxyphenylsulfonylmethyl)thiiranes as selective gelatinase inhibitors

[reactions: see text] Compound 1, 2-(4-phenoxyphenylsulfonylmethyl)thiirane, is a selective inhibitor of gelatinases, which is showing high promise in studies of animal models for cancer metastasis and stroke. The (R)-1 and (S)-1 enantiomers of compound 1 were each synthesized in this study and were shown to be equally active in inhibition of gelatinases.     

Production of double-layer polymer films. Process calculation

A theoretical and experimental study has been made concerning the relation between the rheological characteristics of polymer melts and the basic technological parameters of the extrusion process used for the production of double-layer films. A method is proposed here, and it has been proved out experimentally, for calculating the coextrusion process by which films can be produced from materials whose viscous characteristics follow a power-law relation. A formula is derived which relates the viscous characteristics of melts to the thickness ratios of films and layers of fluid in the extruder head. An equation is proposed for calculating the productivity of such an apparatus, its accuracy having been confirmed experimentally within ±7% for the coextrusion of two domestic grades of polypropylene.     

Dispersion of optical activity in lithium iodate crystals

Recently LiIO₃ crystals have come to be used in nonlinear optics for frequency doubling of lasers [1]. Measurement ofR ine + e − annihilation for\sqrt s between 7.4 and 9.4 GeV

The rationR=σ(e ⁺ e ^?→hadrons)/σ(e ⁺ e ^?→ µ⁺ µ^?) was measured with the LENA detector at DORIS in a scan between 7.40 and 7.48 GeV and between 8.67 and 9.43 GeV center of mass energies. Corrected for QED radiative effects,R is found to be constant with an average value ofR=3.37 ±0.06_stat±0.23_syst. No narrow resonances withΓ _ee (Γ _had/Γ _tot)?0.30 keV (95% C.L.) and no steps have been observed. Based on this value ofR, revised values for υ(1S) resonance parameters are presented.
