Estimates of covering numbers of convex sets with slowly decaying orthogonal subsets

Covering numbers of precompact symmetric convex subsets of Hilbert spaces are investigated. Lower bounds are derived for sets containing orthogonal subsets with norms of their elements converging to zero sufficiently slowly. When these sets are convex hulls of sets with power-type covering numbers, the bounds are tight. The arguments exploit properties of generalized Hadamard matrices. The results are illustrated by examples from machine learning, neurocomputing, and nonlinear approximation.     

Nonvanishing cohomology and classes of Gorenstein rings

We give counterexamples to the following conjecture of Auslander: given a finitely generated module M over an Artin algebra Λ, there exists a positive integer n_M such that for all finitely generated Λ-modules N, if Ext_Λⁱ(M,N)=0 for all i?0, then Ext_Λⁱ(M,N)=0 for all i?n_M. Some of our examples moreover yield homologically defined classes of commutative local rings strictly between the class of local complete intersections and the class of local Gorenstein rings.     

超子中子星性质的温度效应

从相对论平均场理论出发,考虑核子、超子和介子的相互作用,研究了温度对中子星组成粒子、状态方程和中子星质量等的影响.发现温度越高,超子在中子星内部出现时的重子数密度越低.当密度较高时,中子星的核心区主要由超子组成,即中子星转变成以奇异粒子为主要成分的超子星,并且这种转变受到温度的影响,温度越高,转变密度越低.由于超子的出现,中子星核心高密度区域的状态方程,对于不同温度,差别不大,所以有限温度中子星的最大质量都在1.8M_⊙附近.这与观测结果相符.     

Characteristics of radionuclide contamination of different zones of Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site “Opytnoe pole”

Data on the spatial distribution of radionuclides (²⁴¹Am, ²³⁹Pu, ¹³⁷Cs and ¹⁵²Eu) formed during nuclear explosions of different types near P2 SNTS test site are presented. Radionuclide contamination induced by the explosions varies in the concentrations of individual radionuclides, their proportions and species. Examination of the variations is a crucial task to plan remediation activities as well as those aimed at decrease of radiation risk for population and prevention of repeated contamination. Concentrations of ²⁴¹Am and ^239+240Pu that are the most toxic radionuclides in the area lie in hundred thousands of Bqkg^?1. The most contaminated areas are classified by the radionuclide concentration, ratio and form present in soil.     

Square-free-preserving and primitive-preserving homomorphisms

The aim of this paper is to investigate homomorphisms which reserve square-free languages or primitive languages. A characterization of square-free-preserving homomorphisms is presented. We show that every square-free-preserving homomorphism is primitive-preserving. Strongly cube-free-preserving homomorphisms are also studied.     

Effect of diffraction on the electrodynamic characteristics of two-dimensional coaxial Bragg resonators

The electrodynamic properties of coaxial two-dimensional Bragg resonators with two-dimensional distributed feedback are analyzed. These resonators are made of coaxial waveguide sections with doubly periodic corrugation, which provides coupling and mutual scattering of four partial waves. Two of them propagate along the waveguide, while the other two propagate in the transverse (azimuthal) direction. It is shown that the high azimuthal index selectivity of two-dimensional Bragg resonators may be related to a qualitative difference in topology of the dispersion characteristics of azimuth-symmetric and asymmetric normal waves propagating in infinite waveguides of such a geometry. For the finite-length systems used as two-dimensional Bragg resonators, the eigenmode spectrum is found for two types of boundary conditions that correspond to the limiting cases of perfectly matched (open) systems and, conversely, of systems closed for the extraction of transverse electromagnetic fluxes. Perimeter-to-length ratios of the resonator at which the Q factor of the fundamental azimuth-symmetric mode is greater than those of the other modes are determined. The applicability domain of the geometrical approach, which was earlier applied to two-dimensional Bragg resonators, is discussed.     

Base-Catalyzed Reaction of Cyanoalkylphosphonates with Methanol

The equilibrium conversion of nitriles in the reaction of cyanoalkylphosphonates with methanol in the presence of sodium methylate, as determined by potentiometric titration with perchloric acid in nitromethane, varies from 58 to 17.7%. The practical yields of imidates were evaluated by a preparative procedure of isolation of purified imidates from the reaction mixtures (56-14%). Because of the low conversions of nitriles, the reaction is expedient to use only for preparing alkyl (dialkoxyphosphoryl)acetimidates.     

Determination of ultra-trace gold in natural water by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry after in situ enrichment with thiol cotton fiber

A simple method of determining ultra-trace Au in natural water was presented by using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry (GFAAS) after in situ enrichment with thiol cotton fiber (TCF). The sample solution was adjusted to pH 1.5-2.0 with HCl, then the water sample was passed through a column packed with 0.10-0.20 g TCF and the flow rate was controlled at 20-40 ml min⁻¹. The effects of interferences, such as complexing and oxidizing agents and other elements adsorbed on TCF were overcome by chemical treatments prior to the desorption of Au. The adsorbed Au was adsorbed with 2.0 ml hot acid, then it was extracted with 1.00 ml methyl isobutylketone (MIBK). For a 5 l water sample, the detection limit of Au is 0.02 ng l⁻¹. The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) for the determination of 1.44 ng l⁻¹ Au was 9.4%.The method was applied to determine ultra-trace Au both in suspended phase and soluble phase in natural water, the concentrations of total Au in natural water samples range from 0.51 to 67.82 ng l⁻¹. The recovery of added 0.50-6.00 ng l⁻¹ Au was 80-95%. The method is useful in prospecting for Au deposits by means of hydrogeochemical methods. The enrichment is carried out in the field, and then the determination of Au is completed later in the laboratory.     

Sobolev-Type Classes of Functions with Values in a Metric Space. II

We prove equivalence of the definitions by the author and by Korevaar and Schoen of the Sobolev classes of mappings of a domain of an arithmetic n-dimensional space to a metric space.     

Lorentz-Covariant Loop Quantum Gravity

We review the Lorentz-covariant approach to loop quantum gravity. This approach solves the Immirzi parameter problem occurring in the standard loop approach based on the SU(2) gauge group. We show that there exists a unique loop quantization preserving all the classical symmetries at the quantum level and that the results obtained with it, such as the area operator spectrum, are independent of the Immirzi parameter. The standard SU(2) approach violates the diffeomorphism invariance and is therefore an incorrect quantization of gravity.
