Interleukin-1beta stimulates matrix metalloproteinase-2 expression via a prostaglandin E2-dependent mechanism in human chondrocytes

IL-1beta is known promote cyclooxygenase-2 (COX- 2) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) expression. This study focuses on the characterization of the signaling cascade associated with IL-1beta-induced matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) regulation in human chondrocytes. The decrease in collagen levels in the conditioned media was prevented by a broad spectrum MMP inhibitor, suggesting that IL-1beta promotes the proteolytic process leading to MMP-2 activation. IL-1beta-related MMP-2 expression was found to be dependent on prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production. In addition, the induction of COX-2 and MMP-2 was inhibited by the pretreatment of chondrocytes with a SB203580 or Ro 31-8220, indicating the involvement of protein kinase C (PKC) or p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). However, there is no cross-talk between PKC and p38 MAPK in the IL-1beta-induced MMP-2 activation. Taken together, these results demonstrated that IL-1beta induces MMP-2 expression through the PGE2-dependent mechanism in human chondrocytes.     

1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) as extractant in solid-liquid extraction of some trivalent rare earth elements

In the present paper, solid-liquid extraction behaviour of RE(III) (RE La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy and Yb) by the use of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN, HL) as an extractant in paraffin (m.p. 48 approximately 50 degrees) has been investigated at 80 +/- 0.07 degrees. The effect of equilibrium time, pH of aqueous phase, concentration of extractant in paraffin and solid diluent as well as buffer solution used on the extraction efficiency of RE(III) have been discussed. The extraction reaction is RE(3+) + 2HL(o) + Cl(-) <==> REL(2)Cl(o) + 2H(+).

“Aromatic nucleophilic substitution-rearrangement (SNAr-rearrangement)” mechanism provided a powerful tool to design fluorescent probes for the discrimination between biothiols.     

锂离子蓄电池正极材料LiFePO4研究进展

锂离子电池正极材料正在向着高比能量、长寿命、低成本、环境友好的方向发展,而具有橄榄石结构的LiFePO_4正极材料以其结构稳定、成本低、无污染等优点成为21世纪最理想的绿色电源,但自身也存在缺点。综述了锂离子电池正极材料LiFePO_4的研究进展。系统地阐述了LiFePO_4的晶体结构特征及性能、多种合成方法以及掺杂多种导电材料和控制晶体生长制备纳米粉体对材料性能的影响。对该材料的应用前景进行了展望,并提出了下一步可能的研究趋势。     

Two organometallic fragments inclusioned in a 1,3-alternate calix[4]arene tetraphosphane: evidence for transition metal-arene interaction through the cavity

The preparation of an 1,3-alternate calix[4]arene tetraphosphane ligand, 25,26,27,28-tetrakis{2-(diphenylphosphino)ethoxy}calix[4]arene (4), is described. Ligand 4 is obtained in four steps in 17% overall yield. Reaction of 4 with AgBF4 produced the encapsulated two silver complex [Ag2{(P,P,P,P)-tetraphencalix[4]arene}](BF4)2. The solid-state structure shows that the encapsulated silver undergoes a substantial pi-interaction by two opposite arene rings. Rhodation of 4 employing [Rh(cot)2]BF4 yielded the encapsulated complex with a bent coordination mode. Two organometallic fragments inclusioned inside a 1,3-alternate calix[4]arene tetraphosphane was also achieved by the reaction of 4 with [PtH(PPh3)2 (thf)]+. Full characterization includes X-ray structural studies of compounds 4-6.

Synthesis,characterization and DNA-binding properties of mixed porphyrin–polypyridyl ruthenium(II) complexes

Two mixed porphyrin–polypyridyl Ru^II complexes [Ru(bpy)₂(MPyTPP)Cl]Cl (1) and [Ru(phen)₂(MPyTPP)Cl]Cl ( 2 ) (bpy=2,2-bipyridine; phen=1,10-phenanthroline; MPyTPP=5-monopyridyl-10,15,20–triphenylporphyrin) have been synthesized and characterized by elementary analysis, e.s.–m.s., cyclic voltammetry and u.v.–vis. spectroscopy. The DNA-binding properties of these complexes were investigated by electronic spectra, c.d. spectra and viscosity experiments. The results suggested that both complexes (1) and (2) bind to DNA in an outside binding mode. At the same time, theoretical calculations applying the ab initio and the density functional theory (DFT) methods were also performed, and the results showed that there is no good planarity on the main ligand MPyTPP of these complexes, and there are rather great distortion angles (dihedral angles ca. 72°) between the porphrin ring and each of the 10-, 15-, 20-phenyl groups. This may be the reason why the complexes bind to DNA in an outside mode, instead of an intercalative mode.     

Polymer-supported calix[4]arenes for sensing and conversion of NO2/N2O4

The use of simple calix[4]arenes 1a,b for NO₂/N₂O₄ sensing and conversion is demonstrated, both in solution and in the solid state. Upon reacting with these gases, compounds 1a,b encapsulate reactive NO⁺ cations within their cavities with the formation of deeply colored (λ_max∼570 nm) charge-transfer complexes 2a,b. Further functionalization of the calix[4]arene platform is reported for attachment to solid supports. Polymer-supported calixarene material 3 was prepared, which reversibly traps NO₂/N₂O₄ with the formation of nitrosonium storing polymer 4. Material 4 was effectively used for nitrosation of amides.     

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer between a quantum dot donor and a dye acceptor attached to DNA

We show that direct coupling of a dye-labelled DNA (acceptor) to a quantum dot (QD) donor significantly reduces the donor-acceptor distance and improves the FRET efficiency: a highly efficient FRET (approximately 88%) at a low acceptor-to-donor ratio of 2 has been achieved at the single-molecule level.
