Almost automorphic solutions for abstract functional differential equations

For abstract linear functional differential equations with an almost automorphic forcing term, we establish a result on the existence of almost automorphic solutions, which extends the classical theorem due to Massera on the existence of periodic solutions for linear periodic ordinary differential equations.     

Post-synthesis dispersion of metal nanoparticles by poly(amidoamine) dendrimers: size-selective inclusion, water solubilization, and improved catalytic performance

Intermetallic Pt(3)Ti nanoparticles are solubilized in water by using a generation-five, hydroxyl-terminated, poly(amidoamine) dendrimer, G5OH, as a post-synthesis surfactant. Pt(3)Ti nanoparticles, encapsulated in G5OH and dispersed over the electrode surface, exhibited a superior catalytic activity toward the electro-reduction reaction of oxygen compared to as-prepared, highly agglomerated nanoparticles.     

The response of a spherical tissue-equivalent proportional counter to different heavy ions having similar velocities

A tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) has been used as a dosimeter in mixed radiation fields. Since it does not measure LET directly, the response function must be characterized in order to estimate quality factor and thus equivalent dose for the incident radiation. The objectives of this study were to measure the response of a spherical TEPC for different high-energy heavy ions (HZE) having similar velocity and to determine how quality factors can be determined. Data were obtained at the HIMAC heavy ion accelerator for ⁴He and ¹²C at (β=0.59) and ¹²C, ¹⁶O, ²⁸Si and ⁵⁶Fe at (β=0.70). A particle spectrometer recorded the charge and position of each incident beam particle. Events with low energy deposition were observed for particles that passed through the wall of the TEPC but not through the sensitive volume. The frequency averaged lineal energy, , was always less than the LET of the incident particles. The dose averaged lineal energy, , was approximately equal to LET for particles with LET greater than 10 keV/μm, whereas was larger than LET for the lighter particles with lower LET. Part of this effect is due to detector resolution and energy straggling that increases the variance of the response function. Although the TEPC is not a LET spectrometer, it can provide real time measurements of dose and provide estimates of quality factors for HZE particles using averaged values of lineal energy.     

Selective recognition of CG interruption by 2′,4′-BNA having 1-isoquinolone as a nucleobase in a pyrimidine motif triplex formation

To develop a novel nucleoside analogue for the effective recognition of CG interruption in a homopurine-homopyrimidine tract of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), we succeeded in the synthesis of a triplex-forming oligonucleotide (TFO) containing a novel 2′,4′-BNA (Q^B) bearing 1-isoquinolone as a nucleobase, and the triplex-forming ability and sequence-selectivity of the TFO (TFO-Q^B) were examined. On melting temperature (T_m) measurements, it was found that the TFO-Q^B formed a stable triplex DNA in a highly sequence-selective manner under near physiological conditions.     

Computer calculation of tensors in Riemann normal coordinates

A new method of calculation is given for arbitrary tensors in Riemann normal coordinates. Inventing a compact notation for an abstract form of tensors which is suitable to a noncommutative algebra system, we carry out the computer calculations to obtain coefficients of the Taylor expansion of tensors in Riemann normal coordinates. Explicit forms are given up to the tenth order for the metric tensor.     

Magnetothermal resistivity of antiferromagnetic insulator

Magnetothermal resistivity of an antiferromagnetic insulator is calculated by assuming that the thermal energy is carried mainly by phonons which are scattered by spin fluctuations. The spin system is treated by the Green function method.

Some ω-(3-chromonyl)alkanoic acid derivatives, 1a and 2a , n = 4, 5; 3a, 4a and 5a , n = 2-6, were synthesized by cyclization of corresponding methyl ω-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)alkanoates 7b or ethyl ω-(2,4-dihydroxybenzoyl)alkanoates 8b with N,N-dimethylformamide-dimethyl acetal or acetic anhydride-DBU followed by hydrolysis.
