Polymerization of methyl methacrylate with nickelocene‐methylaluminoxane catalyst

The polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) catalyzed with cyclopentadienylnickel‐methylaluminoxane (Cp₂Ni‐MAO) was investigated. Polymerization readily proceeds with this catalyst, and the resulting polymer is rich in syndiotactic content. The effects of the MAO/Ni system on the polymerization activity of MMA were observed, and it was found that only small amounts of MAO are required to reach high polymerization activity.     

Evaluation of thyroid scintigraphy in small animals

Thyroid scintigraphy in rats and mice with 99mTc and 123I was attempted to examine whether this modality might be used in small animals and to describe the possibilities of its application in examining experimentally produced thyroid diseases. A human gamma camera with a pinhole collimator improved for small animals was used for imaging. Thyroid images with 99mTc were obtained 20 minutes after injection and those with 123I were 24 hours after administration. All the scintigrams, although those obtained from mice with 99mTc displayed overlapped salivary gland images, demonstrated sufficiently clear images in size and shape, which showed that thyroid scintigraphy in small animals should be applicable in examining experimentally produced thyroid diseases.     

Local structural analysis of In-doped Bi2Se3 topological insulator using X-ray fluorescence holography

We performed X-ray fluorescence holography measurements on an In-doped Bi₂Se₃ topological insulator and obtained an in-plane atomic image in the vicinity of In. We found that atomic images at the positions of the first nearest neighbors (NNs) are very weak whereas those at the positions of the second and the third NNs are relatively strong. On the basis of the fact that In is half of the atomic number of Bi, we attributed the origin of this feature to the clustering of the In atoms in the Bi plane. We calculated the intensity of the atomic images and confirmed that the formation of In cluster results in a decrease by 30% in the first NN atomic image intensity. However, the decrease in the magnitude is not enough to explain the experimental results, suggesting another contribution such as the lattice distortions. The effect of the lattice distortion on the atomic image intensity is discussed on the basis of the simulation including the positional fluctuation of In atoms.     

Solvent extraction of permanganates (Na, K) by 18-crown-6 ether from water into 1,2-dichloroethane: elucidation of an extraction equilibrium based on component equilibria

Ion-pair formation constants (K_MLA mol⁻¹ dm³) of Na⁺– and K⁺–18-crown-6 ether (18C6) complexes with MnO₄⁻ in water (w) were determined potentiometrically at 25 °C. Simultaneously, extraction constants (K_ex mol⁻² dm⁶) of the permanganates with 18C6 from w into 1,2-dichloroethane at 25 °C were obtained from the spectrophotometric determination of distribution ratios of the permanganates. These K_ex values were divided into K_MLA and other three component equilibrium constants and thereby extraction-selectivity and -ability were discussed in comparison with corresponding metal picrate–18C6 extraction systems reported before.     

Catalytic specificity exhibited by p-sulfonatocalix[n]arenes in the methanolysis of N-acetyl-l-amino acids

Specific acid catalysis of p-sulfonatocalix[n]arenes (n = 4, Calix-S4; n = 6, Calix-S6; n = 8, Calix-S8) was observed in the alcoholysis of N-acetyl-l-amino acids in methanol. The methanolysis rates of basic amino acid substrates (His, Lys, and Arg) were markedly enhanced in the presence of Calix-Sn, as compared with rates observed with p-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid (pHBS), which is a noncyclic analogue of Calix-Sn. This catalytic effect of Calix-Sn was not observed for the methanolysis of Phe, Tyr, and Trp substrates. On the other hand, (1)H NMR experiments following the effect of Calix-Sn on N-acetyl-l-amino acid substrates in CD(3)OD showed that the spectrum of a mixture of the His substrate with Calix-Sn was significantly different from the combined spectra of the respective compounds. These changes in spectra support the formation of an inclusion complex of Calix-Sn with basic amino acids. Furthermore, it was obvious that methanolysis of the His substrate catalyzed by Calix-S4 and Calix-S6 obeyed Michaelis-Menten kinetics. These results indicate that the catalytic activity of Calix-Sn originates from its forming a complex with specific substrates (basic amino acids), similar to enzymatic reactions.     

Synthesis and central nervous system stimulant activity of 5,8-methanoquinazolines fused with imidazole,thiadiazole, pyrimidine and 1,3,5-triazine

5,8-Methanoquinazolines fused with imidazoles 4a-4b , thiadiazoles 5–6 , pyrimidines 7, 9, 11 and 12 , and 1,3,5-triazine 13 were prepared starting from (5R,8S)-2-amino-8,9,9-trimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,8-methanoquinazoline 3 . Most compounds possessed central nervous system stimulant activities.     

Lipase TL-mediated kinetic tesolution of 5-benzyloxy-1-tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy-2-pentanol at low temperature: concise asymmetric synthesis of both enantiomers of a piperazic acid derivative

Lipase TL-mediated kinetic resolution of (+/-)-5-benzyloxy-1-tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy-2-pentanol (5) at low temperature proceeded to give the corresponding (S)-alcohol 5 and (R)-acetate 6 in quantitative yields with high enantiomeric purity. The addition of bases such as pyridine, DMAP, 2,4- and 2,6-lutidines, or triethylamine considerably enhanced the rate of kinetic resolution. The alcohol (S)-5 and the acetate (R)-6 were converted to piperazic acid derivatives (R)- and (S)-3, respectively, via the intramolecular Mitsunobu reaction as a key step.
