Sonochemical preparation of composite nanoparticles of Au/gamma-Fe2O3 and magnetic separation of glutathione

We prepared Au/gamma-Fe2O3 composite nanoparticles by sonochemically reducing Au(III) ions employing no stabilizer in the aqueous solution to form stable Au nanoparticles and allowing them to attach onto the surface of gamma-Fe2O3 particles with an average size of 21 nm. Size of the formed Au nanoparticle depended on the initial concentration of Au(III) ions. The number of the Au nanoparticles, supported on each gamma-Fe2O3 particle was controlled by changing the relative amounts of Au(III) ions and gamma-Fe2O3 particles. The composite nanoparticles exhibited a high affinity with glutathione, a tripeptide with mercapto group so that separation and manipulation of glutathione in aqueous solutions could be performed by application of external magnetic field. Because the surfaces of the Au nanoparticles were not shielded by any stabilizers, or naked, sonochemically prepared Au/gamma-Fe2O3 composite nanoparticles seemed to show stronger affinity to the glutathione than those by the radiochemical method.     

Skew-symmetric form of convective terms and fully conservative finite difference schemes for variable density low-Mach number flows

The form of convective terms for compressible flow equations is discussed in the same way as for an incompressible one by Morinishi et al. [Y. Morinishi, T.S. Lund, O.V. Vasilyev, P. Moin, Fully conservative higher order finite difference schemes for incompressible flow, J. Comput. Phys. 124 (1998) 90], and fully conservative finite difference schemes suitable for shock-free unsteady compressible flow simulations are proposed. Commutable divergence, advective, and skew-symmetric forms of convective terms are defined by including the temporal derivative term for compressible flow. These forms are analytically equivalent if the continuity is satisfied, and the skew-symmetric form is secondary conservative without the aid of the continuity, while the divergence form is primary conservative. The relations between the present and existing quasi-skew-symmetric forms are also revealed. Commutable fully discrete finite difference schemes of convection are then derived in a staggered grid system, and they are fully conservative provided that the corresponding discrete continuity is satisfied. In addition, a semi-discrete convection scheme suitable for compact finite difference is presented based on the skew-symmetric form. The conservation properties of the present schemes are demonstrated numerically in a three-dimensional periodic inviscid flow. The proposed fully discrete fully conservative second-order accurate scheme is also used to perform the DNS of compressible isotropic turbulence and the simulation of open cavity flow.     

Study of Strangeness Photoproduction on the Neutron in the Threshold Region

Photoproduction of the neutral kaon on the deuteron has been investigated at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University. We constructed the Neutral Kaon Spectrometer-2 for the detection of charged particles from the decay of the neutral kaon and the hyperon. We obtained a momentum distribution of K ⁰ with the inclusive measurement. It was consistent with the previous measurement. The total cross section of γ + d → K ⁰ + Λ + p was estimated from the measured integral cross section of γ + d → Λ + X. The total cross section with respect to the photon energy was compared with the theoretical calculations. It favored the Saclay-Lyon A model calculation with the ratio of the neutral to charged coupling constants of the axial-vector meson, K ₁, as ~ ?1.5. The energy dependence and the magnitude of the total cross section were similar to the total cross section of γ + p → K ⁺ Λ.     

Reaction dynamics of excited 2-(3-benzoylphenyl)propionic acid (ketoprofen) with histidine

Photoreaction dynamics of 2-(3-benzoylphenyl)propionic acid (ketoprofen, KP), one of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, with histidine in a phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.4) was investigated with the laser flash photolysis. The deprotonated form of KP (KP(-)) was decarboxylated via UV laser excitation to form a carbanion. It was found that histidine accelerates the protonation reaction of the carbanion to 3-ethylbenzophenone ketyl biradical (3-EBPH) for the first time. The experimental results of the photoreaction of KP with alanine as well as the photoreaction of KP with 4-methylimidazole (a part of the side chain of histidine) in methanol, clearly showed that the protonated form of histidine is a key species for the protonation reaction of the carbanion. These series of the initial reactions should result in the occurrence of photosensitization in vivo. The reaction mechanism was discussed in detail.     

Asymmetric borane reduction of ketones promoted by menthopyrazole‐zncl2 complex

The enantioselective reduction of ketones was accomplished by borane in the presence of pyrazole derivatives, particularly 2‐methoxymethyl‐3‐phenyl‐1‐menthopyrazole (8). The catalysis of zinc chloride makes it possible to lower the reaction temperature below 0 °C, and to promote enantioselectivity.     

NO reduction by C3H6 over apatite-type A10(PO4)6(OH)2 (A?=?Ca and Sr)-supported Pt catalysts

A₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂ (A = Ca and Sr)-supported Pt catalysts were prepared and their catalytic activity in NO reduction were investigated. The Sr₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂-supported catalyst had high catalytic activity in the C₃H₆?CNO?CO₂ reaction; the activity was higher than that of the ??-Al₂O₃-supported catalyst at 300 °C. The basicity of the apatite supports would affect the chemical state of Pt on catalyst, resulting in promotion of NO reduction.

Production of Alkyl Aryl Sulfides from Aromatic Disulfides and Alkyl Carboxylates via a Disilathiane–Disulfide Interchange Reaction

The results of this study show that disilathiane is an effective mediator in the synthesis of alkyl aryl sulfides with disulfides and alkyl carboxylates. Mechanistic studies suggest that disilathiane promotes cleavage of the sulfur–sulfur bond of disulfides to generate thiosilane as a key intermediate. Diselenides were also applicable to this transformation to produce the corresponding selenides.     

α-Trifluoromethyl Chalcones as Potent Anticancer Agents for Androgen Receptor-Independent Prostate Cancer

α-Trifluoromethyl chalcones were prepared and evaluated for their antiproliferative activities against androgen-independent prostate cancer cell lines as well as five additional types of human tumor cell lines. The most potent chalcone 5 showed superior antitumor activity in vivo with both oral and intraperitoneal administration at 3 mg/kg. Cell-based mechanism of action studies demonstrated that 5 induced cell accumulation at sub-G1 and G2/M phases without interfering with microtubule polymerization. Furthermore, several cancer cell growth-related proteins were identified by using chalcone 5 as a bait for the affinity purification of binding proteins.     

Estimation of electrophoretic mobilities of red blood cells in 1-G and microgravity using a miniature capillary electrophoresis unit

Electrophoretic mobilities of red blood cells (RBCs) were measured in microgravity using a home-made capillary electrophoresis unit, which consisted of two small reservoirs of 0.6 mL and a fused-silica capillary tubing with 2 cm in length and 50 num in inner diameter. Migration of RBCs was observed by a microscope at 1000 times magnification and recorded on a videotape. The experiments were performed during stays in microgravity (about 0.01 G), which lasted 20 s and were attained by parabolic flights of an aircraft. On average, the electrophoretic mobilities of RBCs determined in microgravity were about 30% higher than those measured at 1-G condition irrespectively whether the cells were suspended in saline or serum during measurements. This difference might be explained as being mainly due to the cell floating in microgravity. Morphological changes of RBCs may contribute partly to the difference, while the variation in viscosity of the medium under microgravity could play only a minor role.
